This popular very expensive ($21 for pasta w tomato/basil) has declined in both food quality and service. As before, some dishes are very good, and others seriously disappoint. Skip the fish carpaccio (several varieties). The fish, which has been frozen, lacks texture and flavor. Pastas are generally great as are salads. Wine list markup is 5-8x retail for he lesser bottles.

Service is welcoming especially at the beginning of the meal when the maitre d' spends some time with you. From there it can be off and on.... Someone helpful one minute... Them you are filling your own wine glass for the next 20 minutes.

Not sure if we will return.

We visited Cenacolo Mare in Cancun and because it was so good we wanted to visit Cenacolo in Playa. We absolutely loved it!. The menu is a little different so you get diffent choices. I had the lasagna bolognese and it was the best lasagna I have had ina restaurant. The beef carpaccio was good but the calamari was better. We love the atmosphere and it is quite the show to see them making pasta right there in front of you. Rafael and Juanito are great. They make you feel welcome and take great care of the customers. Do not miss this restaurant when you visit Playa.

We saw Cenacolo one night and liked the look, especially the fresh pasta being made outside, and someone at our resort recommended it. The restaurant is very cool, crisp white table cloths and dramatic ligghting, and is in a happening section of 5th ave, great people watching area. The service was very attentive, but the food uneven. 2 of us oredered the lasagna Bolenese and were disappointed. I had the seafood pasta dish that was very good, and the Boratta cheese salad was terrific. Wine and drinks fine. We'd go back but not rush to do so.

We had an excellent meal at Cenacolo. We ate clams and the carpaccio for starters, clam and beef pasta dishes for mains, ending on tiramisu and a chocolate confection. The fresh clam pasta and the traditional (more gloopy, in a good way) tiramisu were notable.

The food stands up to comparison with other high end Italian restaurants I've eaten in around the world (in places you expect to find them like London and NYC).

The downside to this is that the prices also stand up to comparison with top restaurants in places like London and NYC. A particular bugbear of mine was the wine list; there is a selection of fine wines but Cenacolo has fallen into the trap of not offering a decent range of reasonably priced bottles. For me this is a cardinal sin for an expensive restaurant.

So overall, we had a great meal but don't go here unless you really like Italian food and are prepared to pay for it or are not particularly price sensitive and just want a great meal.

We really love this restaurant; the server German (sp?) is spectacular. We ate there three times this last trip. The first time one of the pastas was under cooked---less than al dente---very sad. Our second dinner there was delicious; we had the lobster and pasta special for $130 US, salad, wine, etc. The food was great and the service wonderful. As usual, after a big, expensive dinner, they bring us a glass of dessert wine. Our last night in Playa and our third dinner of the week, we returned. German was off that evening, and we got a waiter who barely spoke English, which was not a problem, but with the language barrier, there was no charm. One of our entrees was the fish in foil and it was not good at all, tasted old and fishy. We each had a bite and left it. It was taken away without anyone asking why it was all still there. When the host came to our table, we said the fish was inedible and all he did was bring us a dessert which we really did not want, but did not take the fish off the bill. We have spent thousands of dollars there and have always looked forward to going. I thought we were treated very shabbily there and do not know it we will ever return.
