We had an excellent meal at Cenacolo. We ate clams and the carpaccio for starters, clam and beef pasta dishes for mains, ending on tiramisu and a chocolate confection. The fresh clam pasta and the traditional (more gloopy, in a good way) tiramisu were notable.

The food stands up to comparison with other high end Italian restaurants I've eaten in around the world (in places you expect to find them like London and NYC).

The downside to this is that the prices also stand up to comparison with top restaurants in places like London and NYC. A particular bugbear of mine was the wine list; there is a selection of fine wines but Cenacolo has fallen into the trap of not offering a decent range of reasonably priced bottles. For me this is a cardinal sin for an expensive restaurant.

So overall, we had a great meal but don't go here unless you really like Italian food and are prepared to pay for it or are not particularly price sensitive and just want a great meal.

We really love this restaurant; the server German (sp?) is spectacular. We ate there three times this last trip. The first time one of the pastas was under cooked---less than al dente---very sad. Our second dinner there was delicious; we had the lobster and pasta special for $130 US, salad, wine, etc. The food was great and the service wonderful. As usual, after a big, expensive dinner, they bring us a glass of dessert wine. Our last night in Playa and our third dinner of the week, we returned. German was off that evening, and we got a waiter who barely spoke English, which was not a problem, but with the language barrier, there was no charm. One of our entrees was the fish in foil and it was not good at all, tasted old and fishy. We each had a bite and left it. It was taken away without anyone asking why it was all still there. When the host came to our table, we said the fish was inedible and all he did was bring us a dessert which we really did not want, but did not take the fish off the bill. We have spent thousands of dollars there and have always looked forward to going. I thought we were treated very shabbily there and do not know it we will ever return.

Service and atmosphere were unbeatable. The food that was recommended by our waiter was excellent. The few items we ordered that were not specifically recommended were good but not great. It was so much fun to sit outside on 5th Ave and watch the people walking by and the chef making homemade ravioli. Fresh baked bread was wonderful!

We eat here on each of our annual visits, and this year made it the final night of a seven-day stay on Riviera Maya. It was by far the high-light of our culinary week. Impeccable and authentic Italian food. Though they were out of their highly-touted Burata, two other Caprese-type salads featured great Mozzarela, cherry tomatoes and Balsamic vinegar. Entrees for our party of eight (plus two sleeping nine-month olds) included lasagna, "green hats", fettuccine bolognese, and seafood skewers- all as good as I've ever tasted (we all "taste-tested" everything. Drinks were good, the service and presentation were charming and imaginative (without being forced). The setting was beautiful. Since the restaurant is on a quieter stretch of 5th Ave, you could almost feel like you were eating in Firenza. My easy choice for the best "fine dining" experience in Playa.

This was by far the best meal of our two week vacation and we are very picky! I had the Northern Italian lasagna, with a white sauce, and my husband had the spaghetti with white clam sauce. We also shared a caprese salad and it was delicious and fresh. The tomatoes were actually very ripe and tasty. Service was great and they were very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this restaurant on 5th!
