“Honest review of Viva Wyndham Maya”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2013

Check in:
VIP Check in, VIP PACKAGE Inclusions:
• Personalized check in (true, we had a desk all to ourselves, with one person looking after the check in, but since we arrived with 2 other couples, this wasn’t really a benefit, the other two couples had regular check in and they received their rooms immediately, we waited for 3 hours
• Room Upgrade (subject to availability), I’m not sure that we had an upgraded room, two double beds and a fridge with 2 water and 2 pop, view of the snack bar buffet, entertainment area, and if you looked between the trees you could see the blue of the water
• Special room Amenities: True Blue bath and body products, very nice and these were replaced as used, bathrobe and slippers, slippers were cut out flip flops, mini bar with daily refill, not refilled daily
• Access to all VIP areas, this included a roped off beach area and a separate area at the main buffet.
• Priority in a la carte restaurant reservations, not sure we received this, but didn’t have any problem booking a la cartes
• 10% discount in affiliated stores, didn’t notice any difference
• 10% discount on meals and beverages additional to all inclusive package, didn’t buy anything extra
• Late Check out (subject to availability), we were asked to check out and pay for the safe the night before as our pick up was at 5:25 am
All in all, $14 extra per day for a separate area on the beach and a fridge in our room, and nicer soap, not worth the extra $
Room:
Small, two double beds, comfortable, changed sheets daily, cleaned daily, flat screen tv, 4 drawers, closet, iron board and iron and a couple of chairs, no problem, we don’t spend much time there so more then adequate. The ‘balcony’ was very small, and since our view was of the snack bar, we really spent no time on it. Bathroom was clean, plenty of hot water and water pressure, toilet didn’t really flush well, usually took 2 tries. I’m a little shorter than average, sink was too high, but lots of counter space. Safe available for $2.00 per day, $14 for the week.
Food;
Breakfast available at snack bar and main buffet, lots of choices, more at main buffet, eggs, pancakes, French toast, waffles, egg station, yogurt, nice selection of fresh fruit, breads, had to look hard for the bacon, it’s at the egg station and you have to ask for it. Pork sausage available, the turkey sausage was hot dogs, which sometimes you found on pizza as well. We had lunch at the snack bar, pizza, pasta, nachos, chili, soups, hamburgers, daily, very repetitive and competitive to get at anything. Same selections with a bit more variety for salads and fruit and dessert selections at the main buffet. Supper at the main buffet had lots of choices again with fruit, salads, main courses. We had three a la cartes – Italian – at the Azteca, very good, International at the Viva Cafe at the Maya (at the very front of the main building) very good, and the Bamboo, at the Azteca, again very good.
Beach:
Amazing beach, lots of beach beds, didn’t see anyone having issues finding a place, though, very close, wondered why the beds weren’t spread down towards the water further then witnessed how high the surf can get. We had the VIP beach area, mats on the beds, more comfortable and not jammed together.
Resort:
Hard working friendly staff, always cleaning, always busy, can’t say the same about management. There are 3 buildings, hotel style, rooms on either side of the hallway. Noise carries within those halls. Babies crying, doors shutting, luggage moving, people coming in after the entertainment, disco, bars close. Ear plugs didn’t kill the noise from the inside, but didn’t hear anything from outside most nights. Staff start early at the snack bar, around 4:00 am. So did get some noise from that. And maintenance seemed to happen very early as well, first morning was tile being cut, again at 4:00 am to fix the outdoor shower, but really, when else could they do it, people would be in the way. SLIPPERY WHEN WET. There are signs everywhere, they mean it, the days we sat by the pool we saw lots of people slip and fall, there are mats down, use them. Small resort, easy to get around, huge court yard, really nicely decorated and constantly being cleaned. And you can get bikes to travel all around the community. Overall, 6 out of ten, only because food was just fine and the lack of designated smoking areas.
Pros:
Very safe and secure area, easy access to Playacar Plaza, Playa Del Carmen, can walk the beach or go for a run outside of the resort as it has sidewalks and is in a gated community. Super Clean. Ability to get a smoothie at the pool bar.
Cons:
Noise level on the interior of the hall ways, smoking, everywhere smoking, no designated smoking areas, on the beach, by the pool, at the snack bar, in the court yard, no way to escape.
One thing did happen that kind of worried me, one day my spouse and I decided to have lunch at the main buffet, we were sitting by the pool that morning, went to our room to wash and change, we left our room and were headed to the buffet. A lady called out to us, ran up to us and asked if we were giving alcohol to children, we said we have no children, then she said not little children but under age 16-17 year olds, said we were pointed out by life guard. Again, we said we have no children. Funny thing was, I don’t drink alcohol at all, I go to the pool bar to get water, a smoothie or a coffee for my spouse and my spouse got himself a fruit drink that morning. Lucky for us, she apologized sincerely and said it was a mistake, but it did worry me that we could be pointed out as doing something that was so far from being correct, it could have been a very unpleasant situation if this lady did not believe us.

Room Tip: We stayed in 1000 series, seems to me that the odd numbers would be quieter and better view than the...

I have taken 3 Sunwing vacations this one was by far the most disappointing. The food was hit and miss. If they had a nice meat for the evening, the server rarely was cutting any, as if they are ordered to only serve a certain amount per hour. Every day was the same food, very little change. There was no shrimp served at anytime, in any sort of dish. If you are a hotdog lover, this is the place for you! Hotdog pizza, hotdog sushi, hotdog chili, hotdog casseroles, and the breakfast turkey sausage were also hotdogs. If food quality is important to you, pick a 4.5 or 5 star hotel. I've stayed at both and had superb food.
The beach is lovely, plenty of chairs, white sand for miles of stress free walking.
The rooms are average but kept very clean by the staff. You're only allowed one bottle of water and asked to refill the bottle at the bar yourself. That's okay, but should provide one bottle per person, not per room. Noise level was okay, never had problems sleeping due to noise.
The entertainment was okay - lip syncing and dancing every night. It would be nice if the hotel hired a professional group for one of the nights. Also, a Mexican band one night at the outside lounge area would also have been a nice addition.
The bartenders were great, mixed good drinks and always cheerful.
The Sunwing rep., Geraldine, who sold the excursions was a high pressure saleswoman who herded the new arrivees into a room and forced sale of only three choices of excursions. She also thought it funny to insult the french - thinking we were all english Canadians. She was wrong! She also claimed that if you had any problem on an excursion to come and see her. I did and she was rude and insulting rather than helpful. Also, her quoted prices are not what you are billed, your charge will be higher once you receive your card statement. Pay cash to ensure you pay what you are quoted.
If you are a non-smoker, stay away from this hotel. It was hard to get away from smokers as all areas allowed smoking.
I would not book into this hotel again, not because of the staff - they were great, but because of the quality of food. For the same price, or a bit more you can stay at a 5 star and have great food and non-smoking areas.

Typically we would have given rating of 4 or more but the incident involving pillow cover with blood stains made it very disappointing experience.. One lesson learned that no matter which resort we go, we will first be checking the linens before settling in the room/suite. It is vacation destination and people do all sorts of crazy things but it is ultimately resort's responsibility to go through the checklist. This kind of experience was reported earlier in some reviews and it is shame that they still do not have procedure in place. I know at the most I will be getting a standard response that they will be correcting the mistake but no.
However, This was our first all inclusive vacation and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We have had a very good experience from the day one. The room that we got was close to beach, main pool, main bar and animation stage. Kids loved the stay. Since this is a 3 star resort we did not have high expectations and were more concerned about cleanliness and safety.
The heart goes out to the staff working there especially the animation one..you see them early in the morning at the kid's club with big smile on face, see them throughout the day planning different activities and you see them best during the late night performances. Big smiles, no attitudes and friendly responses. Hats off to them. 16-18 hours a day? I would be complaining whole month if I work even one day like that.
The food was good as some of the reviewers said you will always find something new at buffet. The pasta/omelette station staff were hardworking and ready to make any kind of pasta/omelette you ask for. At the bar, staff worked relentlessly no matter how big the line up was and what you needed. No expectation of tip. Though we gave the tips from time to time not only to the bar attendants but to the servers/cleaners at restaurant and maids. Only Mexican Ala carte restaurant was better. Mediterranean restaurant (Portofino) had all Italian food (no Mediterranean variety at all) and Italian restaurant was getting all the food served in cafeteria with only better presentation. Again the staff/waiters were polite and good.
The beach was awesome and very well maintained. Enough chairs and well organized every night. Pool was small but well maintained. Rooms are small and that is OK as you only sleep there for few hours but very very awkward sink.
We had a blast on Christmas eve and on Christmas. Kids got to enjoy all the Disney characters again thanks to animation staff. The activities planned by animation staff and their enthusiasm is the only thing we may consider to visit this resort again but the moment we think of the blood stained pillow, we may never put a step inside the resort unless a drastic review on cleanliness is posted.

Room Tip: Better to avoid rooms near relax pool. other locations are good and accessible.

Stayed at Viva Wyndham Maya from March 14-21. The hotel is not too large and you can walk to any part of the resort within minutes. We were in room 2400 on the fourth floor. The room was quite small with 2 double beds. The shower was great, lots of pressure and hot water. I would recommend that rooms be equipped with a small fridge to keep bottled water cold. We had a great view from our deck of the water and Cozemel in the distance. Food was mediocre but having homemade donuts dipped in sugar every morning was a nice treat. The beach at Viva is second to none. You can walk in both directions on beautiful white sand for miles. We went into 5th Ave twice during our stay. There are so many shops where you can bargain for souvenirs. Silver jewellry is a great buy. There is also a small shopping plaza just outside the resort that has many shops to explore. This is a safe area where you can walk outside of the resort as you are in a gated community. The shows at Viva were the best I have seen in 10 years of travelling the Carribean. The animation staff worked tirelessly to entertain the quests and encouraged people to take part in the many activities that were available. One suggestion I would make is that there be some musical entertainment in the courtyard or lobby bar during the evening before the shows (possibly from 7 pm to 9:30 pm). Whenever you are travelling in another country try not to sweat the small stuff and enjoy the opportunity of experiencing another culture and escaping the cold weather and chores at home.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2013

We just returned from a 5 day family vacation at Viva Wyndham Maya - the hubby, myself, 11 year old son and 9 year old daughter. Excellent family and even couples vacation. The check in wasn't a great start as normally the front desk has more English speaking friendly people but it wasn't a bad experience - it just got us checked in. The front desk and the room info folders that you usually find in hotel rooms, don't do a good job of detailing the resort and what it offers/when. It could be much more helpful with more maps, etc to save guests from walking all the way to the front repeatedly. The pics of the hotel and it's rooms are very accurate. The rooms are more sparse than I'd prefer - a set of dresser drawers would enhance the rooms tremendously. However, they are extremely clean and meet your needs. We don't stay in the rooms much so that isn't a huge priority for us. The closet is nice and big and has many hangers and there are two drawers by the closet and two drawers and a cubby on the TV stand. Keeping clothes in there neatly for 2 adults and 2 children was a bit of a challenge. The bathroom was nice and spacious and plenty of counter space - a rare commodity in many hotel rooms. There was wonderful water pressure and it was renovated beautifully. However, the glass doors aren't mounted very well and because of that, water pours out of the shower with every shower even when we made sure to direct the stream to the wall. Just plan on soggy mats and towels and move on.
Our room was on the ground floor and was right across from the pool/bar/stage. We were a little concerned that the noise could be too much. Thankfully, that was a non-issue. There were a couple of nights where we slept right through the nightly entertainment because the rooms were plenty quiet. The early morning hours were a slightly different story. The rooms seem insulated from outside noise quite nicely but the interior noise was more dramatic. For the most part, it really didn't affect our stay but we did notice when a neighbor on either side would answer their phone/early morning cough etc.
The rooms were very clean and the cleaning staff goes out of their way to be respectful and ads plenty of nice touches that make the stay more special.
The nightly entertainment (most of us saw most shows) was a wonderful treat. For the size of the resort, I thought this was a very nice quality act. My daugher, who loves dancing, theater, etc, thought this was the highlight of her trip.
The food was nice. Plenty of choices and fabulous customer service and friendliness. I wouldn't say the food was incredible but our family of 4 always enjoyed the meals. We saw the same staff for so many meals - so many long hours. They are a hard working crew. We made sure to tip them. The all inclusive properties always say gratuities included but the hard work the staff puts in really isn't rewarded in their salaries.
We ate one evening at the Portofino restaurant and that was a delight. Again, the customer service absolutely made the experiece as wonderful as possible.
The beach is fabulous. We walked miles in both directions with nothing but beautiful white sand. We felt safe and relaxed and loved our strip of beach. At the resort, there were always adequate numbers of beach chairs and many activites to keep one satisfied. I only wish there was somewhere close for snorkeling without an excursion but we never found that place. The resort offers free non-motorized watersports - snorkel equipment, boogie boards, paddle boards, kayaks, hobie cat lessons, etc. We checked out some boogie boards but never got to really enjoy them. There is a sandbar before the beach and that must interrupt the waves to not make for a great boarding experience or perhaps the conditions weren't great while we were there. I had a grand time trying to learn to paddleboard while my husband had fun in a kayak. The ocean was a bit rough most of the time we were there - red flag days. I was a bit concerned about the undertow but my son, who loves the ocean, didn't let it deter him.
The pool was a bit cold most of the time. The kids mostly preferred the ocean or they would play in the small warm pool next to the big pool.
The internet cafe was frustrating but it's so inexpensive it wasn't worth getting mad over. We paid about $2 for 30 min of time - not much time but we're on vacation, not working or sitting in front of a computer. The frustrating part is that with their systems, they have to block the customer web access during peak hotel times - like check in and check out times. It just so happens that the few times we tried to utilize the internet were times when they were too bust for us to get on. We thought it a bit harsh that they said it was "impossible" to refund our money but for $2, it wasn't worth getting our blood pressure up.
There was lots of safe, purified water and we greatly appreciated that.
We had fun checking out bikes and riding into town for a morning. Very neat free feature to offer.
The quality of the drinks and the bartenders made this place the best all inclusive I've stayed at! The drinks were tasty and not diluted and skimped upon and absolutely everything we asked for, it was done! There were no creepy, freakishly red/cool aid strawberry margs! We had them make too many different drinks to count and honestly, all of them were yummy. The kids and I really enjoyed their Viva Paradise drink - almost a smoothie - so good and refreshing any time of day. Probably the only exception to the drinks would be in the wine. They do something to it that makes the red more of a sangria type (diluted with something). I'm not much of a white wine person but the white I tried was awful. The red, while odd, wasn't actually bad but it wasn't great. That would be the unfortunate part of this stay as we enjoy a nice glass of red a dinner but I can see how that could get expensive for all inclusive resorts. The Portofino offered bottles that were different than the house red but paying $27 for a bottle of Barefoot seemed ridiculous.
We enjoyed our visit tremendously but I don't think we really appreciated how nice all of the additional features made it until we left and got stuck in Cancun at a less than stellar All Incllusive resort. We checked out of Wyndham Monday and got to the airport. Many hours later, we learned that the airlines cancelled our flights and they were going to put us up in supposedly 5* all inclusives for the night. The first hotel was supposedly 5* but many of the people we were with said it was just plain bad. Because we had kids, we were shipped to a different hotel that was only 4* all inclusive and that was probably the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. We were missing the Wyndham Maya big time. Their food seemed good but 12 hours later, our guts were doing summersaults. Every drink we asked for was either "not available" with our plan or was done so poorly that it was disgusting (think watered down, bright red cool-aid style, cheesy thin plastic cupd). By the time we left there, we were so grateful that the bulk of our stay was at Wyndham!
Out of curiosity, we walked on the grounds of the Viva Wyndham Azteca grounds. That seemed nice as well but we thought the Maya's pool was nicer and that the Azteca seemed more formal and stuffy. We were glad we had a nice but warm and friendly Maya experience.
We will gladly return.

Let me start this review by giving you a little insight into us: me and my family (ages 15 to 73) travelled to PDC and Viva Wyndham Maya from Mar 2 -16th. We are very easy going people, non picky, love a good entertainment team enjoy a fun resort ,enjoy meeting new people, not picky eaters, not too concerned with our rooms decor (as long as they are clean)

Airport
quick and easy to get through..ignore the timeshare sharks...but airport transfer was long and horrible. Should have listened to everyones advise and taken a private transfer.

check in/rooms
quick and easy. didnt get the rooms requested, but no problem, as the rooms we got(4) were really nice (2 rooms close to the trapeze with an adjoining door,1 close to the snack bar..perfect for my mother not lots of walking and the other facing another resort) All rooms were perfect..a slight musty smell in 2, but no big deal. A lot of people seem to complain about the hard beds and pillows..we found absolutley no problem with either and people complaining about decor....yes, the rooms are very basic, but as far as we are concerned we dont spend a lot of time in our rooms, so this is a non issue for us. The rooms are spacious and VERY clean.

Buffet/Al a carte
As i said before..we are not picky people, so the food was fine for us...nothing extra special, but always something to eat. Lots of choices at the buffet.. breakfast tons of choices.. waffles pancakes made to order eggs, and omlettes, fruits, yogurt sausages, toast, bacon, and much more, some breakfasts and lunches were eaten at the snack bar as well. they dont have as much as the main buffet, but we enjoyed having breakfast at the snack bar right near the ocean. They make fabulous cappucinos and frapuchinos here too.we ate dinner at the buffet and again lots of choices for dinner and desserts.
The al a cartes we tried were:
Portofino- good food, small portions but our most favorite.
Viva Cafe-more upscale, really good food too
Don Diego- not our favorite food wise, but lots of fun...we had my husbands birthday dinner here and they more than accomodated my requests and made him feel extra special and had the whole restaurant singing happry birthday to him!
Bamboo-at the Azteca hotel, asian food, really goo too.
All al a cartes (minus bamboo) give you a menu to choose an appie,1st course, entree and dessert

beach
the ABSOLUTE BEST!!! clean, clear water and beautiful sand,,,you can walk for miles

staff
by far the best thing at this resort...before going, i had read about the staff and how good they are and thought ``how wonderful can they be`?``Well. let me tell you...these people are the hardest workers i have EVER seen. Not only do they work hard, they always have a smile on there face and a hola for everyone!!! The maids and ground workers..amazing never any dirt or mess left anywhere bartenders..quick good and fast service. front desk workers, polite corteous and always willing to help out.animacion team...boy, do these people work long and hard..they never complain, work very hard at entertaining people during the day with crazy pool games, bocce, archery, tug of warsbikin contests, volleyball bingo, spanish lessons, catamaran tours, dancing lessons, yoga, salsa lessons and much much more. At night they do the most spectacular shows and change the shows every 15 days (unlike other resorts that do every week) We were SO impressed by all these people, which is what sets this resort apart from all the others. Special thanks and recognition to:
Monica and the other girls of the kids club
Jose-our maid (rooms 1338,1340,1341)
Alejandro-waiter at the snack bar and beach
Eric,sandra and lucia-front desk
Erick,Armando,meeka,victoria,tayde,paulhino,viktor,veronique,nikolas willy.Isabel,Osvaldo and many more-Animcion team
these people really made our stay such a memorable one.We cannot say enough good things about this resort, and will definelty be back some day!!!

My husband & I stayed at Viva from Feb. 7th-17th. It was our first time at this resort. First impression was good. Grounds were nice. Beautiful flowers everywhere and very clean. We felt the resort was run quite efficiently. We had 4 meals at the specialty resturaunts . The food at all of them was good with generous portions of all the entrees. The rooms were always nice & clean, never had a problem entire time with maid service. We spent a lot of time at the beach bar and though the food was a bit repetitive after a few days we really enjoyed that area. My husband & I are early risers and were pleasantly surprised the first day at the beach bar to get a wonderful cup of fresh ground pressed coffee. We were there every morning by 7 a.m. The staff was always very friendly & accomodating. The beach was the best by far either way you walked. Always plenty of beach chairs. Very clean and well groomed. We would definately stay here again.

Positives:
price
very clean
great staff
beautiful beach
close to Playa

Negatives::
Enforce the no smoking area at the beach bar
better wii-fi & help at internet station

Room Tip: High up as possible.
