“I never come back but I will probably come back here”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

GOOD: like many other reviewers wrote: nice pool, well maintained beach, great food and drinks, friendly animation team, lots of included activities… We loved water activities the most. We also went to Playa del Carmen on bikes few times, took a walk on the beach to the other direction looking for wild beaches and they were really not far. By the way during our walk on the beach we saw other resorts and I may say Viva Maya is one of the best. We also rented a car and went to few pyramids ourselves. Tulum was probably the most impressive.

BAD: diarrhea, which kept both of us in bed at least for one day, probably due to water used for ice in cocktails. Room was dark with noisy conditioner and a view to the back yard. I know there are better garden or sea view rooms in this hotel and you probably may ask for one, but we didn’t ask to change, because we thought we would not spend much time in the room anyway. Well, we had to due to sickness… ☺

CONCLUSION: we had wonderful time and I definitely can recommend this hotel. I usually don’t come back to the same places, because there’s so much to see in the World, however I could make an exception for this place ☺ Nevertheless there is really much to do in the hotel, you must go outside also. Otherwise it will be not Mexico, but just another good beach hotel like anywhere in the World

Room Tip: Choose garden or sea view room

This was our second visit to Viva Wyndham Maya (VWM). My family was there last year during exactly same days - Dec 29 - Jan 7th.

Room
Before going to resort we send e-mail with request for a quiet room in the top floor preferably in the building 3000 (furthest away from ocean, but very quiet). Management replied promising to do their best but not guaranteeing anything. When we arrived we found that our room was 2120 - on the first floor close to the ocean, but also close to the theater. Room windows were away from the theater, but you can still hear the show at night. I would say that room was very noisy, but at the same time it was very convenient to be so close to the beach. We requested 3 times to change our room to building 3000. Every time we were told to come back at 1pm next day, but at that time every time somebody in our family was sick with stomach flu and it was easier to be closer to the beach, so we never changed our room. Room was OK, as expected, pillows were much better than last time. Extra bed we requested was very very firm. This time in our room we had a fridge, but re-fills were very sparse.

Beach
Like last year there were not enough beach chairs at the beach. I usually wake up at 6:30am and would go to the beach and at that time I would get our spot under palapa - at that time most of the palapas were available. Some days palapas were available until 9am, other days they were gone by 7:30am. Most of the beach chairs were gone by 9-10am. Beach was good, nice small waves with some seaweed, but not a big deal. One problem I have to mention is - that beach is very crowded.

New Years eve
New years dinner had "all you can eat lobsters" that was very nice. Also in the courtyard they made a table with premium alcohol - Absolut, Grey Goose, different good tequila, etc. They also had there big table with many sweets.
They had European New Years countdown at around 4pm and then local time countdown. For New Year countdown everybody got they special hats or crowns and horns and champagne. Overall nice simple celebration.

Food
This time food was slightly worse than last year. Difference was in small details. For example this year they did not have dried fruit with cheese (I know it is very small detail). Or it was hard to find watermelons. Also, food in the beach bar was replenished with gaps, we noticed that much more this year than before. But they had surprisingly good burgers in the beach buffet. But overall I would say that I managed to find what to eat and enjoy during every meal.
I noticed that this year it was very busy at dinner buffet - most nights it appeared that there were not enough staff to clean tables or serve drinks.

Stomach flu
Now this is the bad part - all my family members got stomach flu while we were there. For most of us it lasted maybe 24 hours, but after that 3-4 days we ate very little and drank very little. So this affected our holiday in a big way. Now I understand that this is not a hotels fault - other guests brought it. And if you read forums, you know that this flu was in most of the hotels in Playa del Carmen. But I did not like that management completely ignored this problem too. Front desk told me that they don't know anything about that, but we clearly saw other people also affected by flu. It was not massive in any way - just a few people here and there, but still, I really wanted different response from management. Years ago I was in the AI hotel in Dominican Republic when there was stomach flu outbreak and management there put a nice ladies with hand sanitizer bottles greeting all guests entering all restaurants or exiting from washroom. I wish they would have done this in VWM. Also more info about this flu from front desk would have been nice. My daughter got sick first and we called in doctor. Doctor was very very nice (came to our room in about 45min after the call, this was outside doctor)and diagnosed her with "Seaweed bacteria" and prescribed her antibiotics. Later we realized that this was just a stomach flu and there was no need for these antibiotics.

Summary
Overall this is still very good value resort. Every day we saw that absolute majority of hotel workers work very hard and do their job well.

We traveled with a group of 25 of us. We were greeted with a welcome drink. It took us a bit of time to check in. We were placed in the same area which was great, especially considering the resort was overbooked. Room were basic but very clean. The grounds were beautiful and very well taken care of. The pool area was very clean. There was also an adult pool set back in a different area, very quiet and relaxing. Due to the size of the resort, we always knew where everyone was and stayed close, another bonus. Staff was very friendly. Food was great. A la carte restaurants...I recommend the Marimare, Portofino, presentation was amazing!! We were also allowed to book at the Viva Wyndham Azteca, but never attended. I believe if the rooms were not so 'basic' this hotel would have a rated higher. Recommend this hotel, especially of you don't like to do a lot of walking.

We visit Viva Wyndham Maya back in November 2012 for two weeks. After an 11 hour flight and hour long transfer from the airport we were greeted with a welcome cocktail and checked in quickly. The check in staff were very nice and professional even when we locked ourselves out of our room and needed a new key to get in.

The room itself was rather basis but met our need, in a place like this very little time in spent in the room anyway although the pillows were terrible and could do with some upgrading. The housekeeping staff always done a great job in cleaning the room.

We visited the buffet daily and also visited Miramare, Viva Cafe and the oriental restaurant in Azteca. The buffet was nice with plenty of fresh fruit daily however their coffee was disgusting. We always found something nice to eat but somethings the food was a tad cold. Viva Cafe was very nice, I tried the tuna steak and not being a seafood lover I even enjoyed it. Can't say a bad word about Viva Cafe unlike Miramare. Miramare was a disaster, the food was very unappealing and always cold, so much so that we left and wen't into town for dinner. The oriental restaurant in the Azteca was amazing, very nice and service was great (even learned how to use chop sticks).

The beach and beach bar were amazing and the staff always remember our order and the fact we liked top shelf brands & never waiting too long for a drink even if the bar was really busy (they really appreciate the tips).

We found the animation staff nice and always extremely friendly and never tried to pressure you into taking part in the activities.

The quiet pool is always nice for a nice relaxing day away from all the hustle and bustle of the main pool and beach.

Stayed in the VIP section Dec 15-22. Overall it was a good resort. The buffet was better than I expected, but it did start to get a tad repetitive towards the end. The restaurants are good, but we found out the hard way that they serve the same menu every night, so don't bother going to the same one twice. The beach was excellent, as was the pool area. The included free non-powered beach equipment (boogie boards, kayaks, catamaran sailboats, etc) was a nice touch. They had plenty of activities for children and adults, but nothing much geared towards my teenage boys. The boys still enjoyed themselves. The trapeze was down for maintenance on all but our last day.

The big letdown was the room. We stayed at room 3213, in the new VIP section overlooking the adult pool. The room was big enough and the beds were very comfy but the plumbing was terrible. we lived in fear of the toilet which would repeatedly clog, and after calling it would be hours before someone showed up to unclog them. After the third day we stopped using it alltogether. The sinks were very slow to drain as well. Also for some reason after the first day we never had a facecloth. Plenty of bath towels, one hand towel, but no facecloth. And we never did figure out how to adjust the air conditioning. It seemed to ignore the thermostat and just be on all the time.

The place was kept very clean. It wasn't an uncommon site to see people sweeping the walkways, and dirty plates and glasses just seemed to magically disappear. It's safe to walk around barefoot.

Lounge chairs were plentiful, but it can be difficult to get a table by the poolside buffet.

Tips: There is a free bike rental in the parking lot. The bikes are aged and decrepit, single-speed with coaster brakes, but they're good enough to get you into town to do some shopping (10 min or less bike ride on level ground). They can also get you to the Xplor and Xcaret attractions, which are fairly close (30 min or less bike ride). The onsite gift shop is reasonably priced, and there's a little strip mall across the road.

Room Tip: There is no elevator, so request a floor level room if you have difficulties with stairs. Beachside...

Fantastic resort for families. Just got back from two weeks over Christmas and have not one single negative thing to say. Great food (two weeks you can get bored, not here). Good drinks, and excellent service. VERY clean, the staff are always cleaning something, from the grounds to the tables. The staff seem to really enjoy working here, a lot of them walk around and sing! Great dive shop, my son was certified here and this was his first diving in open water, they treated him like family. The resort and activities are Very kid oriented, with an amazing animation team, trapeze, pottery painting and more. Night shows were by far the best we've ever seen, and we've seen plenty! Excellent value for your money. Would stay again for sure.

Room Tip: We were in room 1144, 1st floor. Our balcony opened to the trapeze and we thoroughly enjoyed our la...
