Just returned to London on the 4/9/12 after a 10 day stay .This is an excellent 3 star Hotel with basic yet adequate rooms with good airconditioning and wonderful large walk in showers. Buffet is excellent provided you get there early enough if you arrive 2 hours after opening expect to be looking for a table and less choice. 3 Restaurents to choose from, Italian very poor in my opinion Mediteranean the best with great steaks and the mexican not bad if you like the Full on Mexican experince hats included. Evening entertainment varied and good all the staff in the hotel friendly and the entertainment staff and bar staff all work very very hard.Large Beach very nice and jet sking and Para sailing good fun yet pricey . My main tip is buy all your souveners at the Chichen itza site once your inside very very cheap compared to all the other tourist shops. Also Cenote trip also good with wonderful deep swimming hole 200ft deep to cool you down .My only beef is getting stuck on a tour bus with all Spanish speaking tourists shouting at each other all day talking at a normal volume does not seem possible for some reason .Again perhaps we were unlucky and they were the exception but they had NO concept of time keeping or any manners to appologise for being late.We were back late from the tour and wasted at least 2 hours waiting for people not bothered to return to the bus on time or even be ready at the Hotel at the start on time !!! .Be warned Mexican/Latin time keeping can wear very very thin and is not at all funny after a while.

probably the best thing about this hotel is their friendly staff...they are always happy and smiling. The hotel does fall down on food quality ( buffet) though...and this isn't a harsh criticism... variety in the snack bar is awful and they struggle to keep up with demand between 12.30 and 2pm.
International and Meditteranean restaurants were excellent, but the Mexican which we expected to be the best was really poor. The Italian at Viva Azteca was really nice...didn't use the one at Maya. Location is great, lovely beach, lots of activities, nice pool areas and cheap to get into town by taxi ( of which there are loads 24 hours a day ) Reception service is slow...never enough people on duty and this results in some really lengthy queues at check in which gives a poor first impression. Rooms were large with adequate facilities but need a freshen up. For evening entertainment go into town because the hotel shows are poor. The Virgin Rep ( CARLOS) is absolutely fantastic, the best we've ever experienced.

Room Tip: rooms close to the pool are noisy until about 10.30pm

I was here in October 2011 and then again in June 2012. WONDERFUL - I will continue to go here annually. I found it to be relaxing, safe, lots of choices for daily walks - beach, residential areas, and to downtown. Food was great - wonderful restaurants in addition to buffet. Friendly staff, easy check-in and check-out. Family friendly. Although you have access to sister property - Azteca - I didn't find a need. I would recommend not using their airport pick-up service though - it was convenient but expensive......take a taxi from the resort back to airport - it is on your schedule.

Room Tip: I have been beside the Relax Pool - easy access to adult pool and room.

Great resort. Excellent faculties. Great for children. Animation team are amazing. Kids club staff are superb.Staff around the resort are fabulous. I'm running out of superlatives.

Some reviews say that the reception staff are rude and unhelpful. I've got one would to say to them, liars! Everyone is amazing. When I needed a travel adapter, I asked Wendy, assistant manager, and she gave me one without having to do that. Really guests should have them or buy them from the shop.

Food is good and plentiful.

I am still in the resort so will write another when I get back.

We have been travelling to Playa Del Carmen for the past 15 years. We stayed at Viva Maya for the first six years in Playa, then, because we wanted to stay longer than a couple of weeks, we rented condos or apartments. This year, it was a mother and daughter trip and we decided to return to Viva Maya. We were not disappointed and we loved our stay from August 18 to 25.
The beach is very beautiful and wide in Playacar and you can walk along the beach all the way to 5th Avenue. Workers had the sand raked and spotless before 7 a.m. each morning. In addition to the main pool where all the activities take place, there is a quiet relaxing pool closer to the front of the resort.

We had an ocean view room just steps from the snack bar where we enjoyed an early morning freshly made donut with our coffee. The snack bar also had other breakfast items available for guests who wanted to start their day on the beach without going to the main dining room for breakfast.

If you go to the the main dining room for breakfast, an employee is making fresh donuts each morning just as you enter the dining room - make sure you try one - the kind our mothers made before donut shops existed. The food in the main dining room has such a variety, something for everyone, so I can't see why anyone would complain about the food at breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Many of the hotel staff remembered us from our previous visits and we were made to feel special. All staff were very professional courteous, kind and provided us with excellent customer service. Our room was always spotless and we noticed that staff work very hard at keeping the hallways and grounds immaculate.

We enjoyed the meals in main dining room and we had dinner at Portofino and at the Italian restaurant (where we really enjoyed the homemade ravioli). We were allowed three reservations at the specialty restaurants and we had dinner at Bamboo at the Viva Azteca resort one evening. Service in all restaurants was excellent.

We enjoyed freshly made pizza and other snacks at the snack bar. Burgers, hot dogs, chips, salads, fruits and other snacks were available all day and some snacks were available all night. We became addicted to the freshly made tortilla chips, guacamole, salsa and cheese sauce that became a daily afternoon snack for us. Bartendes worked very hard and never kept guests waiting for their drinks to be prepared.

We enjoyed the evening entertainment and wish that we could have stayed another week to see all of the shows. It was fun to see the Activities staff in the evening shows after interacting with them during the day. The activities and sports team employees were great and we really appreciate the long days that they worked, from early morning until midnight after the disco. There is no way anyone staying at this resort could be bored - there is something to do for everyone.

We observed the young ladies who worked in the Kids Club. They were very kind and patient with the children and we would definitely recommend this resort to parents who want their children to have a good time while on vacation. Having the children perform in the evening Disney Show was an excellent idea and we noticed how excited the children were when parents brought them to the afternoon rehersal to prepare for the show. Children also participated in a mini-show prior to each evening's entertainment and we could tell how much they enjoyed being on stage.

The resort is located in Playacar, a 10 minute taxi ride to the tourist are of 5th Avenue. The rate of a taxi from the front door of Playacar resorts to 5th Avenue is 90 pesos. If you want to walk to the main street and flag down a taxi, the cost is 70 pesos. (Apparently the difference in the rate from the front door at resorts is because the taxis spend time waiting at the resort instead of picking up passengers.) The cost back to the resort from 5th Avenue should be 70 pesos. (Make sure you ask the taxi driver for the rate before you get into the taxi.) Locals suggest you do not tip the taxi drivers.

There is a small shopping area located across from the resort and we found the prices and selection to be competitive with those in town.

When we were at the resort, guests were from Italy, Germany, South America, England, the Netherlands, France, Poland, Canada and the U.S. One of the reasons we love this resort is because of the many nationalities of guests to interact with. We were not bothered by time share people - anyone interested in a time share could go to the booth located in the courtyard and make inquiries there.

We have stayed in other resorts and smaller hotels in Playa Del Carmen, but always remember Viva Wyndham Maya because of the fun time that we have whenever we have stayed there.

We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: We would suggest an interior room close to the pool and snack bar. There will always be guests who...

I visited Playa del Carmen in October of 2011 and stayed at the sister resort, the Azteca, and had a great time with a group of friends. This year I went for a week with my family (me, husband, two boys ages 13 and 15). We had an amazing time! The resort is very comfortable and the staff is across the board friendly, warm and helpful. They are also the performers every night for energetic and entertaining shows. The boys met lots of kids from other countries, which was great. The food at the restaurants (especially at the Mayan restaurant over at Azteca - you have the option of going there for one of your "sit-down" meals) is very consistent and varied. Every night there is something special and different in addition to the standards. Even if you have a picky eater, there is sure to be something to satisfy them.
The rooms are clean and the beds comfortable. We stayed over near the "relax pool" which is adults only - so if you are there for a quiet experience, I would probably recommend requesting that. We only did one excursion, booked separately from the hotel, so I can't speak to the experiences of working with guest services for booking. I would definitely go back!
