We are 2 sisters in their 60's that stayed at the Gran Porto Real. Like other places we vacationed at, there were positive aspects and negative aspects. We specially appreciated at this hotel several of the staff members. The young men in charge of the activities at the pool area were very welcoming. We found all of them very polite, nice and interested to connect with both young and older guests. So our thanks to Omar, Arthuro, Erick, Gilberto, Verlan and Edgar. We also enjoyed meeting Manuel at the towel station, who always served us with a great smile. We also want to acknowledge all the staff members that work all day to prepare the Mexican Fiesta night at the pool area and the Carabian fiesta night on the beach. What colossal work that represents!! We were also very impressed by the fact that many staff members spoke English. On the negative side, we found that this resort didn't offer enough shelter from the sun. The beach chairs have no small huts or umbrellas, without paying...not very acceptable for a 5 star hotel. Many people have already commented on the beach, the sand bags are definitely a draw back for people who look forward to swimming in the ocean. The buffet restaurant offers a variety of food and we found it satisfactory. The room was clean, spacious, had a security box functioning with a code at no extra fee. The excursions that we booked were great. Our air canada representative Marcos, was very helpful. We had one guide that we particularly appreciated. His name was Ulysses and he was really a walking encyclopedia, on the Maya people. So in all we enjoyed our stay at that hotel.

We stayed here at the end of April, 2013. We had a great time, no major complaints :)

Rooms:
We had a Oceanview Junoir Suite (126). We could see the ocean from the room, but barely. However even tho we were on the first floor, our balcony was up off the ground. The room faced the street, but no major noise complaints. For some reason it took me a while to realize there were slippers and robes in the room, as well as some books on mexico. Also, I didnt realize this until the last day that the little magnifying mirror had a light in it :) The maid was great, everything was always clean. No bugs even tho we were on the first floor. Felt very safe. We did have an issue with our room cards not working for the first few days, but that got worked out. We asked for two doubles not on the first floor, but ended up on the first floor with a king. They very quickly brought a second bed which fit fine in the room.

Food:
I'm a picky eater, I found enuf to eat :) I did notice the chicken wasnt always cooked tho, just watch out for that. FYI, Heinz ketchup is there :) Everyone on our trip (8 people), loved the sushi, for those who eat it.

Resturants:
Again, i'm a picky eater, but I did find stuff to eat. But everyone else LOVED the restaurants Italian was the favorite, most people went 3 times. Spanish coffee was great at the Italian, but was a neat little show when you ordered it at the Mexican place.

Drinks:
Generally okay. Wine was not very good, but sparkling wine was fine. My favourites were Mango Tango, Sangria and mai tai. The beer on tap was dos equis, which was great. The bottle beer in the room was Superior, which I didnt like very much, but it might just be my taste in beer.

Pool:
Good pool, size was fine for the resort. Drink service was good. If you want a chair at the pool, you have to go out very early to claim them. The "tranquillity" pool was not tranquil. Its the pool with the swim up bar, and its Adults only. Kinda small-ish pool. But it can be loud. Having said that, we spent most afternoons there. I also went up to the jacuzzi for a short minute... Very hot, 38C... but nice :)

Cleanliness:
It was very clean, you always saw people out cleaning the floors, etc. Very well done. And I LOVED that there was hand sanitizer everywhere. I used it as often as I could. No one got sick from the food on our trip.

Wifi:
Generally worked good, 2 of the 4 rooms had no problem with wifi... 2 rooms couldnt get it. But it worked great at the pools and lobby. I was able to skype with my kids at home with no major problems from my room.

Beach:
Not good. We didnt swim at out beach, but went down a ways and swam there. Not a big deal. It was very wavey the first few days, then it started to calm down. Lots of sand flees, but I think you would get that anywhere. My husband went snorkelling a few times. You could smell the seaweed some days depends on the wind. It was strong at times...

Excursions:
We did Rio Secreto, which was great! Very cool :) And a combined tour of Tulum and Akumal (swimming with sea turtles). This was very cool too, the turtles were amazing. I think we saw about 12. Note: You cannot wear sunscreen so either bring biodegradable stuff or wear a shirt... You will get burnt.

Dont go to the other hotel for lunch/breakfast. No matter how pushy they r its a waste of you time unless you are truely interested in a time share. We were actually not bothered once about going to the other hotel, but others in our group did end up going.

I would return again if the opportunity presented itself, but we generally like to try out new places. It was great being close to 5th ave. Did some shopping and looking around. If a great beach and great wine are the most important thing for your vacation, then you will not enjoy it here. But if you are just up for a great hotel in a cool location, this is it!

I'd be happy to answer any questions if I can :)

Room Tip: We had a first floor room, something we dont like because of the bugs and the safety issue, but we s...

This place is great. Excellent food, friendly staff and strong drinks (with a good liquor selection). The pool bar was my favorite place to spend time. The bartenders there were great, especially Avila and Miguel. The entertainment and activities guys around the pool were very enthusiastic and really got the guests to participate in the activities. We had a great time hanging out with them and they kept things fun and active, especially Arturo. Overall a great experience and this is a great property to visit.

Having checked in online prior to arrival, we expected prompt service -- but we forgot that we were in Mexico I guess, because it just seemed to confuse the workers at the check in desk.
If you are planning on lounging on the beach in front of the hotel you can forget that because the hotel beachfront is not for swimmers or loungers. There is a big drop off and lots of sand bags in front. If you are planning on staying in the pool then this hotel is fine.
The hotel does have some very nice restaurants and since your paying for "all inclusive", you should take advantage.
One last thing, the posted rack room rates were cheaper than the Expedia rates we paid.

This resort meets and exceeds its five star rating! Each enconter with the staff was pleasurable. Check in was a breeze with the bags delivered to the room immediately. The ocean view from our room looks just like the pictures,. The rooms are very clean and well airconditioned. Omar and Arturo were very informative about the activities. Erik and Gil paddled me in a kayake through the mild breakers. The hotel is well situated near shopping. Gil took us on a wonderful site seeing bike tour to see ruins by the oceanside. The recreation team were great fun! Pablo our cheerful beach attendant remembered our favourite new drinks and met our ever need. Marias Mexican restaurant served unique food ..each course was amazing. I looked forward to theme night dinners and professional evening entertainment .
I found the entire staff gracious and extend a sincere thank you to all of them for making this a memorable vacation experience.

Room Tip: oceanside is breath taking
