Food was just average. Service was exceptional. You had to have reservation for this restaurant but we could not understand why as it was just an Italian restaurant.

We loved our stay at this resort. We have been to Mexico before on the other side at Puerto Vallarta but this was our 1st stay in the Riviera Maya. It was fantastic! Our Best Day rep in the resort Esteban was very helpful. We went on 2 tours. 1st the Rio Secreto (Underground River) Reserva Natural. We highly recommend this one. Its a new one only opening in 2008. Breathtaking!!! I Shout out to the staff there and our guide whose name we have forgotten and are so sorry because we would have listed him as great, plus good food too. 2nd we went to Chichen Itza to see the ruins with the company "Go Natural" (Tour Chichen Itza Undiscovered). Great guide Gonzalo! These ruins are spectacular and a surprise was all the vendors along the pathways selling everything regular markets sell but at ridiculously low prices. Ex.: Mexican Backpack $15 in Playa Del Carmen, $1 at Ruins vendors. After that we tried a lot of activities at the Resort. The bike tour was free and great. Thanks Erick and Gilberto! We tried snorkelling in the pool and then scuba diving. They did such a great job we decided to scuba dive on the Garden Reef right off the beach of our Resort. We are ages 47 and 43. We have never scuba dived before - it was surprisingly like all the pictures or Nemo movie even. The colours, the fish. We were down 10 metres (30 feet) Really a highlight of our trip. Thank you so much Victor!!! You were fantastic and a big shout out to the other staff at the water sports Ricardo and Carlos! We went para-sailing through the company that is affiliated with the hotel. We might have found a cheaper deal down the beach but sometimes you get what you pay for and we opted for this company. It was great too! So many 1st's. One thing we did not get to was the Resort's Spa so we can't review that for you. Time went really fast, we are really glad we had 10 days. Somedays we just wanted to be lazy on the beach or go for walks. Maria's at the Gran Porto Real has amazing food and for a special treat you have to try their "Spanish Coffee/Mayan Coffee" they put on quite a show making this and its so delicious. We ordered this at the Albatros restaurant, thank you Miguelo? spelling sorry if I got that wrong. In hindsight I would have made more note of names at the resort to put on here since they actually win prizes for being mentioned and since they don't make much and rely on tips and these reviews I would have liked to thank so much more of the staff. We really enjoyed the dancers at the Resort. They put on very entertaining shows. The resort also recommended going to the Coco Bongo nightclub but again we ran out of time. We heard it was fantastic - 26 shows in one night. Jim Carrey the actor and friends own this club. It is heavily advertised. Our cleaning staff was great too. Thanks Simona. Towels folded almost every day into mermaids, hearts turtles, bunnies or bears etc. Flowers on our bed, sheets turned down at night and chocolates on the pillow. NOTE: We tipped as many staff as we could, this really made our service seem over the top so if you are going to Mexico a suggestion we would make is take $100 worth of $1 US bills with you and just keep tipping. Oh and a nice thing about this resort was the 24 hour snack bar. We didn't think we would use this as much as we did but wow did we use it. Thanks to all the staff that keeps the coffee, alcohol, water and food stocked in there. So convenient. The beach food restaurant was great too especially if you didn't want to dress for a restaurant and just keep tanning on the beach. All the bars were great. We did not take our kids but there seemed to be quite a few that did and the children all seemed to really enjoy all the activities provided for them. Kind of made us wish we had brought ours. We did a good amount of shopping too, 5th avenue is good and super convenient but pricey. Its the convenience factor that works well its just walking no special trip anywhere to shop. The hot tub on top of the resort was fantastic before sunset. Great view! Down from the hot tub is the tranquil pool and bar with sushi. There just seemed to be so much to do right at the resort. Our room was Jr. Suite but we did not have ocean view. We were street side but it was wonderful anyway and our balcony overlooked palm trees and we could see the ocean from it at an angle. It depends how much you want to pay for a view. It looked like all the rooms that were ocean view were good views though unlike other resorts that say they are ocean view and you have stand up and look really hard through bushes or hang way out over your balcony for just a peek. This one seemed to be what it said. We spent more time on the beach watching the ocean so not having the ocean view room was fine with us. We spent the money we saved on that on tours, shopping and extras but that is a personal preference. One thing my husband didn't like was this wierd Real Club thing they want you to do where they take you over to the sister hotel across the street the Royal for a breakfast or lunch for a 90 min presentation and incentives but its really a waste of time unless you really want to have to be pressured to keep staying at all affiliated resorts. We didn't do it. Some do again a preference thing.

Room Tip: We chose Jr. Suite no Ocean View just to save money. It was a nice room. Gets pricey-er if you want Ocean View but all the rooms with an ocean view seemed to have a great view so if you have the extra money go for it. Some resorts ocean view isn't always great this resort seems to be stretched out horizontal right on the beach so pretty sure all views would be great. We did not mind not having the ocean view our room was great too.

We stayed there 5 years ago and had payed for the junior suite it took me most of the first two days to get it. We had used a travel agent who finally got us our suite. I was just researching hotels and thinking about the GranPorto again but the room thing is a real let down.

The food was great and other then the front desk who pretend they don't know what you are talking about regarding your room it was great. That being said it does have a lot of return guests from Canada who do not seem to have the same problem. I might add that we were not the only ones ,there was another couple and a family waiting with the same complaints. I was told they over book and are counting on you to just go along ,they don't offer to discount your room either if no JrSuites are available.

Room Tip: Insist on getting what you payed for or have them transfer you to their sister hotel next door!

We just got back from our spring break vacation and had a GREAT time at The Gran Porto Real!! The staff was really amazing and took care of us the whole time. The beach is a little "iffy" but everything else was great. You can walk to 5th Avenue where all the shops and other resturants are. We are booking there again for our summer vacation!!!

Room Tip: The staff will go out of their way for you. I tipped a few people a day( like $10) and they will treat you like royalty

I had a great time, nice place, food was ok and the beach was soso, but a few hundred feet away was a better beach so overall it was ok. I went scuba diving with Victor MArtinez, very nice, i loved it, he was a nice guide. I had a major problem with the supervisor of activities, which were pretty boring all week, his name is Omar, I had to complain to the manager of hotel because he ruined my trip. He was not a nice person to me, he accused me of trying to fool him.
