“Very unique setting, satisfactory meal.”
Reviewed June 3, 2014

Unlike a lot of the reviews, I enjoyed the experience at Alux. Aside from the questionable seating arrangement (we were the first people to arrive and yet the host seated us in the front by the bar, when others arrived they were seated by the back, near the cenote), we had a great time. It is a very large cave, and they allow you to walk around freely to explore the rest of the dining area, which meanders about another 100 yards past the entrance.

We ordered the lobster ravioli and the Mayan Chicken and two salads. The salads were a good size portion but the main entrees I considered small, about 5-6 raivioli and a very small chicken breast, about 6-8 oz. Other than this I had no complaints, as it was very tasty and presented well.

All in all I believe the total came to around $120 with a bottle of wine. For the experience alone I believe it was worth it. How many times can you say you dined in a cave?

“Outstanding food, super cool venue, best ambiance”
Reviewed June 2, 2014

Alux Cave restaurant is a MUST-SEE/EAT while in Playa del Carmen. The food was really outstanding and if it's your birthday, let them know!! They do NOT do any kind of embarrassing display, but they do a really cool (and quiet) little something that is really just awesome visually, and the final result is just awesome to the tastebuds. The ambiance here is out of this world. Be sure to tour the caves before or after your meal. They also have some more private areas that I'm assuming one can reserve. They have some creative drinks at the bar. We each ordered something different, and frankly, it was so good, it could have licked the plate! hahaha. Highly recommend.

“Very Cool Place”
Reviewed June 1, 2014

Six of us ate at the Alux in May of 2014 for my wifes birthday. What a neat and unique place. The setting in the cave was so cool. We have never been to any place quite like it. Walking around after dinner was very impressive. The food itself was also very good. All of us were very impressed with the quality of the food. We all thought it was very good and would highly recommend it to anyone. It was a little on the expensive side, but well worth it.

“Amazing setting; Mediocre food”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

My girlfriend took me here as a birthday surprise. We were staying at Hidden Beach Resort, and the taxi was $25 each way. The setting is amazing, inside a cave with stalactites and stalagmites and pools of water. Unfortunately, while the presentation of the food was attractive, we both found the food so-so. Not bad; just not memorable. We had much better food at Hidden Beach.

“Overrated”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

We heard a lot of hype about this restaurant. I was expecting a great and fascinating atmosphere with excellent food. The atmosphere is certainly interesting but not nearly as much as I had been led to believe. My husband and I shared the surf and turf platter which worked out to about $50/person CDN. There was a lot of food on the platter but the lobster was overdone and the meat was rubbery. My daughter ordered a meal that was supposed to be medallions of beef wrapped in bacon. She enjoyed it but never did find the bacon. My other child had the spinach ravioli in a three cheese sauce which was really deli shoots and more reasonably priced but small.
Overall it was an interesting restaurant but I would not recommend it.

Thanks for taking the time to review us. We appreciate the feedback. I would like to take this opportunity to respond to some of what you bring up. Our prices are similar to restaurants with similar cuisine in the area, though our operating costs are higher due to our privileged location. Regarding lobster, it is important to note that caribbean lobster is very different from its northern cold water cousin. We are so glad you enjoyed the ravioli.
