If you are in the mood for inexpensive grilled steak, sausage or chicken, this is a good laid back option. NO atmosphere and we would not have tried it by the street appeal but the reviews are pretty accurate. Good little spot for lunch as you come off the beach. Only serves soft drinks but a C-store next door has beer.

In a town filled with Al Pastor tacos on every corner...the true highlight of my street food eats was La Portena! This place is so small that most passers by only have a moment to take a glance at the small stack of Choripan warming on the grill before their eyes start focusing on the larger restaurants wondering what to eat. This stall is next to the corner market on 5th Ave and 38th with no visible signage. Look for the palapa and that is La Portena! The Choripan is truly special here! An Argentinian style sausage grilled to perfection with the perfect amount of fat and seasoning on a toasted roll for only $60 pesos! It's so good that I usually get "uno mas" each time! If your looking to "splurge" get the ribeye served with a baked potato and side salad at a very reasonable $180 pesos. This place can also satiate your burger and fries cravings! Don't miss out on the local flavors of PDC with many hotels pushing the All-inclusive option it can be tough to venture out! When you find a place like La Portena it makes it all worth while! It was great hanging out with the La Portena crew. Going to miss you guys! See you next year!

So, like everyone said, this is literally just a hole in a wall. Six seats at the counter and a barrel with a table on top and three seats.
But the Ribeye was PERFECT. Why? The little grill they have rigged up is so hot that it sears the meat beautifully and gives it and the fat(which wasn't trimmed too much) a perfect char and Med. rare in the middle. My wife had Flank Steak, also perfect. My son had a hamburgesa....perfect with shoestring fries/nice and crispy. Add a little fresh salad and the grilled, baked potatoes AND Chimichuri sauce to slather all over everything and you get a HOME RUN!!!
They don't serve beer but you could grab one from next door if you wanted.
My only problem (we were warned about this from our dive guy at Cyan-Ha who eats there all the time)is they don't open at a set time. They are supposed to open at one but weren't open at 1:30 a couple days later when we came back for more. We ended up eating down the street and when we came out of the other restaurant they were finally open. We were all bummed because we wanted more La Portena. Go there!!!! Order the Rib Eye!!! I promise you will come back if you can:)

Never a miss when in Playa, one of our absolute favorites for years! Their choripan is the best,, even outdoing the much more expensive Eldiez restaurant close by. The spinach empanadas are aaaamazing, although they are often out as they go quickly. The burgers and fries are pleasing to the palate as well. The chef prepares all food as ordered and uses a brick grill over charcoal... this provides a nice flavor to the sausage and hamburgers. It's a small establishment off of 5th Ave that sees many patrons, and at times is out of food items. It's a disappointment in the moment, but never a deterrent for future visits. It's that good! Prices have increased over the years, but still reasonable. Truly a must during your stay... you won't be disappointed!
