This was our second trip to Mahekal. The beach is amazing. The resort is so beautiful and relaxing. The staff is great and very friendly. Food is good and the beach service the best!! We stayed in a penthouse this time and the view was awesome. We left the windows open at night and fell asleep to the sounds of the ocean. For us, this place is perfect. Can't wait to see what the future brings with purchasing Las Palapas. We can't wait to go back to Mahekal!

Love this place. Great get away from it all. Staff are great and thoughtful. Have been several years in a row and will keep going back. Food is good value and the bar drinks are delicious - no skimping on the alcohol! Can't wait to go back!

This resort is the perfect place to stay. No TV or phone in the room which makes your vacation that much more relaxing. The staff was excellent, extremely quick when it came to solving any issues you may have with the room. There is a sulfur type odor that you smell once in awhile all depending on which way the wind was blowing. We were told that is was coming from the mangrove. The resort was built on a swamp so everything that was buried by sand and dirt is rotting, therefore releasing a sulfur type odor. If you snorkel, you can actually see bubbles coming up from the sand. It was in those areas that the smell was the strongest. Also, if you are wearing real silver, it will turn black. We assume it was from the gases being released as there was no other explaination for it. Other than that, I would highly recommend this resort. Best beach in Playa and the staff and food were excellent!

Drinks at bar could be better.
Rooms have no WIFI, nor TV, nor telephone for asking setvices, nor fridge.
You should only expect a bed and a bathroom.
Food at restaturant is excelent. We stay 8 days and we found new dishes everyday.

My husband and I spent a week at Mahekal, Feb. 6 thru 11. The grounds are spotless and very pretty. The beach has lots of thatched umbrellas and comfortable chairs and nice shade. Good beach for walking. There are 2 pools, spa and 2 restaurants. There is a choice of breakfast, lunch or dinner. We opted for breakfast and dinner. We had lunch on 5th avenue, just a short walk from property. The street is closed to traffic and has lots of restaurants and shops. We had lunch at a french bistro, don't remember the name, but was at the corner of 34th and 5th ave. Delicious baguette sandwiches, also had lunch twice at a pizza restaurant on the other side of the street, delicious, fresh pizza and then had lunches at Mahekal. As I said the resort has 2 restaurants, so we presumed there would be a different menu at each. The menu was the same each night and both choices. It seems a little strange that being in a tropical resort, the restaurants would offer hot soup each night, but to our surprise the soups were all very good. The food was average, but we never left hungry. The only real complaints we had were the lack of furniture in our palapa. We had the top floor of our talapa which had a nice covered deck with 2 hammocks, small table and 2 straight back chairs. The room had 2 queen size beds with no headboard (to lean on, if reading), a desk with 1 wooden straight-back chair. We had no dresser and no comfortable place to sit in the room, other than the bed. Behind the beds was a tile shelf that we used for our clother. We had a small closet with 1 shelf and some hangers and a safe. Sparse to say the least. The bathroom was quite big with very pretty mexican tile and walk-in shower. The room was spotless. On some of the days, there was a gas odor on the beach depending on the wind. When we asked at reception what this odor was, we were told it came from the mangroves that were ripped up to make such a nice beach. It seems that the mangroves have a very large root system and even though they are gone, the roots produce this odor. On the whole, we enjoyed this resort, but are used to a few more amenities. We did 2 snorkeling trips, which were very good. We snorkeled in a cenote (underground river cave) and then at Akumal beach to see green turtles. This was a very good trip, something we had not done before. We then took our second trip with "the original snorkeling adventure" and went out to 3 different parts of a reef at Puerto Morales.

Room Tip: we were in garden palapa

We recently returned from a second trip to Mahekal. Getting there proved to be a huge hassle as Winter Storm Pax caused us 4 cancelled flights and a 4 night stranding in Baltimore. However, the staff at Mahekal was very accommodating of our needed changes to arrival date and trip length. The hotel was just as nice as we had remembered. The staff, especially Rogelio and especially Manuel (who remembered our names 2 plus years later and welcomed us back personally) were awesome. Unfortunately, we were only able to stay 4 nights after all the delays getting there. We have vowed to return again so we can get a full week of the Mahekal experience.
