My husband and I stayed in Mahekal Beach Resort for 3 nights. We had a lovely time. The staff were very friendly, service was superb, the food in the restaurant was nice and location was great. We highly recommend other people to stay there.

Room Tip: higher floor would suit people who like the quietness.

Greetings to New Zealand! One of the things we like the most about being an international destination is to welcome people from all over the world. It's great to read that you had a lovely time and that you found our service to be superb. We are also happy to know you liked our food and our location. We hope to welcome you again in the near future and extend our greetings to everyone in the land down under.

The location is fantastic. Away form the hassle of Playa, but in the best beach of the region and very close to shopping and restaurants in Quinta Avenida.
The rooms are all you need for a fantastic holiday, without TV and net.
The employees, particularly at the restaurant, are very, very nice, one can see that they have the experience and the will to serve.
Good breakfast, good dinner, sometimes buffet, sometimes à la carte.
Of course this is not a typical 5 star all inclusive resort. This is a small hotel, catering for people who have some "taste", who enjoy a peaceful and relaxed holiday. if you want big buffets, modern rooms, shows at night, etc, then stay elsewhere. This is for roamance and tranquility.

If you have a trip planned or plan on staying at this property, book Ocean Front or the back of the property on the Caribe side by the Fountains. The Garden Front Rooms on the Caribe Side, 3rd & 4th row from the Ocean, look directly onto the back side of other units, your view will be electrical wiring and A/C units. (Not as Pictured)
There's is a public access that divides the property, if you are a light sleeper ask not to stay in units adjacent to the access. This access divides the property, Caribe on your right facing the ocean, Adventura on your left.
We had check in issues as well, when we checked in we asked about upgrading to an Ocean front room. The desk clerk gave us a ridiculous amount to upgrade our two rooms. When I checked on the Internet, the price was much lower. If you wish to upgrade look at the rates online before you arrive, or call and do before your arrival date.

The property is in need of updates, the tiles are broken, grout crumbling, mirrors cracked and our unit the ceiling was leaking. The floor had such wear, it appeared dirty. The hot and cold water in the shower would vary in temperature. Really, the place wasn't full, if they want customers to return, they should be giving any one who arrives at this point their best rooms.

At times, there's a terrible sewer smell that drifts over from an adajecent property.

The Adventura side has buildings that house 4 rooms. During our stay they started the remodel process four days into our stay. on the unit right next to ours. Impossible to read or take a nap. And, it was during a week where it rained constantly. Forcing us inside. They do not have enough umbrellas for their guests. There's, no clock, phone, Internet or TV in your room. You can't call the front desk should you need assistance. We stayed in unit P-2, there were times when my I-Phone would pick up the Internet. There's not a TV anywhere in the resort.(We wanted to check on the weather)

Only one restaurant was open, on the Adventura side during our stay. They don't have an activity director, there's a building that houses pool tables and ping pong. Paint your own pottery. Two pools, the one on the Adventura side sits looking at the Ocean, the Caribe pools faces the bar and the view of the Ocean is blocked by buildings.

On the POSITIVE side: The grounds are well kept, and they rank the seaweed every day. I thought the beach was very nice. 99% of the staff is very friendly and helpful. Food was good every night, except Seafood Buffet night. Breakfast was made to order with fresh fruit and bread each morning. It's very close to 5th Avenue, great for shopping and lunch. Security was present at all times. It was a good price, if they had been more considerate to the guests, with the renovation process I would have given this a higher ranking.

Room Tip: Ocean Front!

We appreciate the time you took to write a review  I regret to read that you were disappointed and felt we were not considerate enough, as this is the opposite to what we are aiming at. As you mentioned, the hotel is undergoing extensive renovations so we can offer an even better experience to all our guests and are doing it in a way that minimizes inconveniences to our guests. At this time we are renovating only 27 of the 121 rooms and the section under renovation has been fully boarded up to contain noise. The rest of the hotel will be renovated after the winter season, starting on May 2014.

Regarding rates, it is always best to book hotel accommodations completely before arriving, since the rates published online are not always available when arriving at the Hotel.

The sewage smell you mentioned is a natural smell produced by mangroves that appears during certain times of the day/year. The odor is sulfuric acid which unfortunately is not pleasant, but it is totally harmless other than it smells. This is the rainy season so you experienced tropical showers during your stay. We do have a limited number of umbrellas, but Boli, our concierge, informed me that as soon as he had one available, it was given to you immediately.

We apologize for the inconvenience of not having phones in the rooms, but no phone, TV, radios or WIFI in our guestrooms has been our concept, as we believe that not having electronic devices forces our guests to unplug, relax and enjoy more their holidays. When someone wishes to check on the weather or something else on the internet we have a computer in our lobby for our guests. In addition, our front desk and concierge staff posts the weather forecast in the lobby and they are always available to check and download any information our guests may need during their stay. I appreciate mentioning what you liked and I believe that had not been for the rain, your stay would have been very pleasant.

I hope you return and if you do, I am confident you will be very pleased with the results of our renovation.

Let me just start by saying that I would stay here again just for the location and the accomodations. The beach is beautiful and the bungalows in the sand can't be beat. The staff was very accomodating. Happy hour was fun, we met alot of other guests staying at the hotel and how can you beat a 2 for 1 drink special??? I really liked the fact that the clientele was a mix of people from all over the world...not just the US..which makes for interesting conversation. The food was ok. Breakfast and lunch were just fine, however dinner was not all that great. We actually traded dinner for another meal..ie lunch...which is what I would recommend, then you can enjoy a fantastic dinner at one of the many restaurants in town!

Greetings to Utah. We are glad you decided to come back and visit us again. Our resort has a great location. With its beautiful beach and grounds, It offers a sense of seclusion and at the same time the benefit of being a few steps from la Quinta and close to all of the attractions of the Riviera Maya.

It's great to read about the details you enjoyed and about our international guests, because we welcome people from all over the world. I wish you had enjoyed our food more, but we will continue doing what we can to please everyone. We thank you for sharing your experience with other guests and look forward to welcoming you again and again.

Pleasant smaller resort. A nice family atmosphere unlike some of the larger American style compounds which can feel like fancy prisons. This was a great little place. Friendly staff, many of them told us they had been working there for 10 years. Right on the beach and a short walk from the strip of shops, bars and cafes.

The food was good and much of it was made to order, surprising for a resort.

The ringing endorsement for it though was that so many people we spoke to there were on return trips.

First night in the hotel was a nightmare, we were given a terrible room and Eduardo (Reception/Manager) was extremely hesitant to change us rooms. At some point we were even willing to pay extra to get a room upgrade but unfortunately there weren't any available. First problem was there wasn't any hot water (which they fixed), then we realised the bed didn't smell too good especially the pillows and then lastly when we finally managed to go sleep I realised that the Aircon which was directly on top my head was dripping down. At 1am at night I had to walk back to reception (no phones or tv in the rooms) and insist that we change rooms. After a short discussion he finally agreed and said yes. Apart from the first night problems, we had further problems with Eduardo, he wasn't very friendly for the rest of the trip and even though he had told us he could arrange day trips for us early in the morning on the same day when we went to see him he told us it was too late and couldn't help us at all. Was a pity because the rest of the staff in the hotel were brilliant and extremely helpful.

The hotel (excluding the rooms) was quite nice. Direct access to the beach is good and the hotel provides free for its guests sun beds and umbrellas with good service and nice selection of cocktails.

Food was okay I guess, breakfast is quite good apart from the buffet it provides a nice selection of things you can order and they prepare for you. Dinner was not great but of a good standard taking into account it was buffet. Selection of food changed every day.

Have mixed feelings about this hotel but I guess if you remove the "Eduardo Factor" I think its a pretty good hotel in a good location at a decent price. Would rate this hotel as a 3 star and not 4.

I regret to know of your bad experience and I offer you our most sincere apologies for the bad service given at front desk. We do not have someone in our employment with the name Eduardo, but we know who you are talking about. If this offers any consolation, this person is no longer working for Mahékal.

The way you describe your first night is not the way our staff should have dealt with the situation. If something in your room was not working at its, best you should have been offered another room.

We appreciate the good comments given about the rest of our staff. I am pleased to let you know that our Hotel is undergoing renovations and all rooms will be fully improved as well as the entire resort, respecting the layout and natural environment that our guests enjoy.

We thank you for taking the time to write about your visit and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.
