“Relaxing rustic experience!”
Reviewed March 7, 2013

I am used to staying at large resorts with all the amenities (this resort doesn't have irons, fridges, etc). The Mahekal Beach Resort was BEAUTIFUL! The view and beach are breathtaking. Most of the staff was wonderful and very accommodating. When we first checked in they tried to put us in a room with two double beds (I had reserved a king). They immediately upgraded us to ocean view with a king bed (we were thrilled!).

The breakfasts were good - got boring after 7 days though. The lunch was very good if your craving good ole American burgers and comfort food. The dinners were just okay. Nothing too impressive. I actually had more bad experiences than good with the dinners.

The Concierge was outstanding and helped us make reservations and get taxi's as needed. Very helpful and friendly! I would recommend this place to couples and families that are looking for a different experience other than a large resort. It was very relaxing swinging in the hammocks they set up for you! Overall it was a great vacation!!

This place is awesome, but not for everyone. If you want a concrete jungle, with elevators, a huge resort and 5 star everything, this isn't for you. But, if you want to be right on the beach, with views to die for, great service, a quaint, clean room with everything you need, this place can not be beat. The breakfast was excellent. We opted for lunch most day's and it was also very good. They serve right on the beach. The dinners aren't quite as good, but are still better than the last resort we stayed at in Playa. The location was also excellent. You can walk to everything in town! I'd go back in a heart beat. I miss it already!

Room Tip: If your looking for a room with a view, ocean view was just as good as ocean front!

Feb 20013 was my 5th trip to Playa and my third Trip back to Mahekal. Mahekal was as perfect as the first(if not better). Absoluetly love this place. There is nothing better than waking up and stepping out onto your own privet porch or patio right on the beach still in PJs to have morning coffee. Or having night cap with friends after walk down 5th for dinner.

Rooms are clean, roomy and neat (only ever stayed in beach front). With tile floors and thatched roofs, While the absence of TVs, phones and WIFI might bother some. We found it relaxing to read instead of watch TV, free WIFI is a short trip to the lobby/bar. Phones a none issue and we were there with 2 other couples ( also beach front) just a quick walk down the beach to there front porch to make plans.
The food: Breakfast is aways good would be happy with the buffet only and always fill up before getting my eggs, pancakes or french toast . The shrimp tacos are my hands down favorite lunch item but tried other things and menu and they were delicious. Only ate dinner there once and it was good (Italian buffet). Did not loose weight:(
The staff was supper nice happy and accommodating From relaxing check in to the sad departure.
Also the Spa: beach massage is AWSOME have to have one every time I go.
The only down side is this will be my last trip to Playa/Mahekal for a while. Have to see the rest of the world.

My wife and I went for 7 days. We had previously stayed at a 5-star all-inclusive hotel a few years prior and wanted to save a little money by staying here. Unfortunately the old rule applies: you get what you pay for. We noticed this right away.

Customer service is hit or miss. The front desk employees don't appear to love their job. It shows in their mundane attitude. The groundscrew and maids are very friendly though.

Food is all-inclusive, but not the drinks. We had the option for breakfast and lunch or dinner every day. One waiter, Marcos, was unbelieveably attentive and friendly. He's been there 12 year and works 24 days straight! I wish they were all like this. The food is definitely not the best and it got boring after Day 4. My wife order steak one evening medium well and it was almost raw. They never even offered fix the problem. The drinks were great though and we ordered a lot! We ate at a few local restaurants and found the food to be better. I would rate the food as average. We got a day pass at the 5-star hotel an had dinner there one evening. You can't even compare the two!!

Our room/cabana had a terrific view. The deck was awesome and we lounged in the hammocks almost daily. It was VERY relaxing. bedroom area was rough. We made the mistake of leaving a bag of licorice out and the red ants came out in a stream from a lamp mounted on the wall. They were pretty every night too. In fact, they bit my foot. The shower is open concept and is beautiful. The power outlet destroyed my wife's expensive hair dryer so be very careful what you plug in. Not sure if it's a currency issue or an indivual outlet problem. The room had a safe and it worked great for us.

The hotel has two pools. It seemed like the pool near the breakfast/lunch area was used for small kids while the other one was filled with folks from around the world that spoke various languages. Most everyone that visted didn't seem friendly and kept to themselves, unlike when we visited the 5-star resort previously. We encountered a very drunk french man that sat next to us who was loud and obnoxious. The staff never asked him to leave. In fact, they fed him two shots of tequila that he slammed down. It made our dinner unpleasant.

Our concierge, Ignacio, was a terrific guide on where we should tour. He was outstanding and I highly recommend him for help on anything. He even negotiated our taxi fares for us!

We asked for an extra pillow, and towels and received these daily. However, we ordered a small fridge for our room prior to us arriving. They claimed they didn't have one available but possibly would the next day. We stayed for a week and never saw one.

So overall, I would rate this hotel as average. If you're looking for something all-inclusive next to the beach, this is it. If you're looking for something upscale and accomodating, this is not it.

Room Tip: We booked through Expedia with a King bed, but got stuck with two double beds. My wife complained a...

After an extended 12 day trip to another property we found ourselves with another 4 days before our return flight and no lodging plans. Found this property with a quick internet search for beach front lodging. Perfect place to relax. One negative, it seemed that two thirds of the evening dining room was affected by the aroma of sewage (not uncommon in Mexico). When we changed tables, away from the water features it was far less noticeable.
Food was ok though just average, however, you choose this property for the location and ambience NOT the meal plan. We'd return tomorrow.

This was our first experience on the Riviera Maya. Found Mahekal thru Tripadvisor and then consulted with friends who stayed in the past and had great things to say about the resort.

Not many bad things to say. The staff is pleasant and very helpful, the resort is immaculate. The grounds and beach are very clean. The room was charming. We had an upper Palapa with ocean view. The porch was great with chairs, table and hammocks and great ocean views. The bed takes up most of the room, but there is plenty of room as we were nearly never in the room. The bathroom is just big enough. We slept each night with the blinds open to let in the sea breeze and hear the waves crash on the beach.

Waking up to the beautiful sunrises and to walk the beautiful beaches to the north was a delight. The beaches to the south get much more busy and crowded as you go towards the town.

The food at the resort was very good. Especially breakfast. We usually opted to have lunch at the resort and go into town for dinner as the main street (5th) is a short walk from the resort and there are several good restaurants within a block of the resort. We had the dinner on the resort a few nights and it was hit or miss. Good, but not great.

Getting a chair or two on the beach for the day was never a problem, the bar service on the beach was great. The 5pm happy hour was also great each day.

This is a resort for those that want peace and quiet. There are no TV's or phones in the rooms and the wifi only work in the lobby, near the one pool and bar area. So if you need to be "plugged in" or have TV in your room this is not the place for for you. We loved it.

The only small complaints would be that the rooms don't have a refrigerator to keep things cold. They do give you two bottles of water each day when they clean the room. We found out about renting a refrigerator for your room for $10 a day, which worked out great. We did have a couple large bugs to kill at night after turning on the lights when we came back to the room, but that can be expected in this region.

The only other complaint was that the beach just north of the resort had a bad sewage odor that occasionally drifted into the resort. Mostly we noticed it at night a few times. Hopefully that can be resolved or it was a one time occurrence.

All in all it was a great vacation. One that we will do again whenever we need a quick, easy relaxing escape from winter.

Room Tip: Rent a refrigerator for $10 a day. Free coffee is available every morning outside of the two bars.

My friend and I went to the Mahekal Beach Resort from Feb 9-16. 2013. My first contact was with the Oana at the hotel. I emailed her beforehand with details of our trip and special requests. Mainly that this was a celebration of life for my dear friend who has been battling cancer, and we were hoping for a peaceful, calm and restorative vacation. Also that we are both vegetarians. She assured me that would be no problem and that she and already told the kitchen. She appreciated having the information before we got there so they could be ready for us.
When we arrived we were greeted by the sweetest front desk person I can ever remember meeting. Not only was she welcoming with a big smile, she was efficient and knew her job too. Her name is Rosalio and she's fantastic. Every time we asked her a question or went to the front desk she was the same sweet, helpful person. Much appreciated by us.
Our room was 30b. On the second floor. The room was exactly like the photos show on their website. No tvs and it was lovely! We loved the hammocks outside on our private deck. We asked for 2 queen beds and they were very comfortable. (My friend is used to memory foam and was a little more "princess" like for the 1st night)! We loved the palapa roof, (which you would not have if you were on the ground floor), and really appreciated the air conditioning.
The beach was beautiful. We walked up and down the beach and were very glad we were at our resort. The others seemed full of singles drinking all day- and all that follows from that- but our place was mainly couples and very low key in comparison. We walked northwards along the beach- away from the pier where the ferry comes in- and just past the few small boats moored in view was a really calm stretch of water. It was beautiful and not as crowded. We headed there most days. We didn't use the resort pool. The ocean right at the resort can get really rough but like I said , just walk up the beach a little (5 mins), and it's a lot calmer.
The grounds of the resort are really beautiful- sandy paths with palm trees heading to the beach.
Ruben, El Capitan de Restaurante, checked in with us each and every time we went for breakfast or dinner. He was amazing. There was a vegetarian option on the menu every time with the offer to make us many other dishes not on the menu. There was always a buffet with salad options too. We felt special and as if nothing was too much trouble for us. Drinks are not included- not even water with dinner- so take the bottles of water from your room with you. The food was tasty and fresh. The bar by the lobby has a Happy Hour from 5-6- a real happy hour! We experimented and ended up liking the mojitos most of all. The good thing about only one hour for happy hour is that it doesn't encourage that "belly up to the bar for the night" mentality. Everyone pretty much disappeared at 6.02!
We walked to 5th Avenue- 1 minute walk up the street- every night after dinner. We found a couple of nice places for an after dinner drink- the cuban restaurant and the little place opposite the hotel had amazing music! I will review the restaurants we went to separately. There were some great places! We didn't fear for our safety in the area.
All in all this is a great resort and I will definitely go back. The location, the beach and the staff were all fantastic.
The only reason I didn't give it Excellent is because on our last day a large, rowdy wedding party arrived, broke the spell and shattered our peace and quiet. It started the moment they got there with woo hoos and talking like they all had a hearing problem. We talked to the front desk almost immediately as experience tells us that this behavior doesn't get quieter as the night wears on. They told us that they would remind them about the other guests but that also they were here for a wedding... They have weddings twice a month apparently. We could still hear them when we got back to our hotel around 11.30pm as they were still at the bar and still woo hooing. We talked to the front desk again- really we knew it was in vain but we needed to make our feelings known. And THAT'S why Excellent is not awarded - because even though there was a wedding party there, they should have been told right away that at THIS resort there is an expectation to be respectful. Nipped it in the bud. On the other hand 2 weddings a month is a lot of revenue for the Mahekal - I get it.
