“Garden View Pueblito”
Reviewed May 24, 2012

My wife and I just returned from a 9 night stay at Mahekal and all the good things said about it are true. It's a beautiful property with great people. Like many have said, if you are looking for an Ai where everything is sterile and concrete this is not for you but if you have seen the photos and read the reviews you won't be disappointed. We stayed in the garden pueblito area and were very happy with our room. It is a more private area and is only about 50 yards further from the beach than the more expensive rooms. When we went in May it was pretty hot and steamy so opening the shutters to listen to the ocean was not something I was going to do anyway. I can tell you the AC works very well though. As some have said if you get a room directly on the beach you can have people lounging right outside your bungalow during the day. The mid level area looked to be hit or miss for a true ocean view. The resort location is great for walks on 5th Ave.

Room Tip: Garden view pueblito rooms are the best value IMHO. We had a ground floor room and it was fine, ther...

Dear Gene S,

Thank you for sharing your comments on Tripadvisor. We love to hear about our wonderful team and how attentive they are, they truly are proud to work for Mahékal, many have worked for 20+ years here at the hotel and are familiar to many of our repeat guests. I will share your comments with them.

Since last year the landscaping of the Garden View Pueblito gardens and the addition of the Fountain in the gardens has given it a very relaxed and cozy feeling so that even though these rooms are 50 yards aways from the ocean they have an ambience of its own. Yet the Ocean Front and Ocean View directly near the ocean are an experience you might want to try on your next visit!

We certainly look forward to your next visit!

Sincerely,
Victoria Campos

This is our second year staying at Mahekal and we will return! We love the personal service at Mahekal. We stayed in the "cheap seats" and were treated like royalty! Everyone there worked so hard to make our stay memorable and enjoyable. The food was really good! Last year it seemed there was more variety but, the food is so good we didn't mind. They expandanded the lunch menu and it was really tasty. On the nights we weren't too keen on dinner we opt'ed for lunch. We were not disappointed. I had a really good hamburger (eating Mexican for 2 weeks and I really wanted a taste of home). We rented boogie boards it was a great value! The environment is really cool; birds, wild animals and banana trees on the property give this place a feel like no other resort in Playa. But, truly...it is the staff that makes this place great. Seeing the same staff year after year is like coming home to old friends. Tips: Piola (pizza place down the street) is yummy..ask for the basil martini. Seafood and Taco night at Mahekal are not to be missed. Have the special romantic dinner on the beach..it's a value and a precious memory we will take with us. Special thanks to: Boli, Rafeal, Alberto, Marco, all the housekeeping staff, and the magnificent Vincente!!!!

For the owners and managers, we loved the live harp player at Casa Club. Really a nice relaxing touch. We wish there was an "adults only" pool. We loved and noticed all the small touches.. Coffee at Casa Club before 730. More tiled walkways. Imaculate new landscaping. Nice job!

Room Tip: We have only stayed in the Caribe section of this resort and it's wonderful.

Second trip to Mahekal and I am certain it will not be the last.
We were there last year in March and just returned last month.
The staff are so SO wonderful and attentive, pleasant and happy to help.

I will say I think the food is a little bland. I don't eat cheese, so nothing really tasted like anything unless I put hot sauce on it. Still, I ate and was happy.

For what it is, it is such an affordable resort. I am so so glad we discovered this little gem.

We went just the two of us last year and this year we returned with another couple, and it was incredible for all of us!
I can't wait to go back, so relaxing and wonderful and amazing.

Stayed here for a week in early May. We have been coming here since 1988 on a regular basis. Food, service and location continue to be outstanding. Friendliness and interaction with working staff (waiters and bar tenders) are what make Mahekal distinctive. Happy hour at the Casa Club is a great opportunity to meet folks from all over the world. Bolli, the concierge, is the person to go to for tour advice. He is always helpful and totally honest. Thanks all for another great vacation.

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms are a great value. Just make sure you really get an ocean view.

Mahekal Beach Resort was exactly what we were looking for! Small, boutique size, in a great location within walking distance of everything in Playa. (Much better than the huge, self-contained all-inclusives imho.) We stayed in a Garden View Caribe palapa, which I think is one of their most economical rooms, and it was fantastic! Huge room with hammocks on the porch, great rainfall shower, room-cooling A/C, lovely organic toiletries, a ton of closet space, and of course, daily towel animals. The resort was located on the most gorgeous stretch of beach with plenty of chairs and umbrellas. The hotel staff was friendly, from the bartenders to the waitstaff to the security guards to the ladies in the spa. The two pools were perfect. The food was just okay, but we were close to so many great restaurants (Sala Rosa, Aguachiles) that we didn't eat at the hotel that often, though the view from the breakfast/lunch restaurant was killer. We got a great deal on the resort through BookIt.com, though I would gladly pay more to return. A truly beautiful and relaxing beach resort--wish we had stayed longer!

Room Tip: I don't think you could find a bad room at this resort. We loved our Garden View Caribe room. To...

Started with the typical - paid for sea view but rooms had barely any. Eventually got some first floor that had a nice view. rooms are quite dated and bathrooms greatly need some refreshing. Food is decent for a HB arrangement but they would not prepare any boxed lunch prior to restaurant opening for lunch....

Room Tip: ask for first/top floor rooms if you paid for sea view...

We just spent a week at Mahekal for our son's fabulous destination wedding the last week of April 2012.
From the minute I saw Mahekal online, I just new it was going to be perfect. The staff were phenomenal. Jose at the desk, Manuel and the wait staff, and everyone who's names I cannot remember, treated us like family. Having our breakfast there could not be better. I think everyone in our group of 40 will be sprouting fresh mangoes out of some part of their bodies we all ate so many ! The eggs to order were sensational and the fruit and pastry buffet with yogurt, granola and oatmeal with fresh juices was great ! It was wonderful to have a choice between lunch and dinner at Mahekal which gave us ample time to try other local restaurants.

The grounds of Mahekal are impeccable with beautiful garden, plants and walkways with thatched roof rooms with simple but very comfortable furnishings. Then there is the magical walk to the beach with the mushroom lit paths so you can relax in the sun and swim and snorkel in the beautiful water !

Happy hour was just that. A happy time for our group with great drinks with great company.

To top off the week, we had our son's wedding on Saturday April 28, under a beautiful flowing white gazebo on a private area of Mahekal's beach, followed by the reception at Mahekal's Aventura restaurant/pool area overlooking the beach. Again, phenomenal service, food, and drinks with a great DJ Bob. Dulce (?sp) was the best wedding coordinator. Even when we expressed our concern of having only 40 people in such a large room for the reception, she told us not to worry it would be fine. She was so right! It was a perfect size for our family and friend's comfort and fun evening!!! She really knows her business very well !!!

Memories will be cherished for a life time from our week at Mahekal. No other resort would have been able to compete with our experience there. Many friends and our son are already are planning for them to renew their vows at Mahekal, in maybe 6 months, just so we can return. And return we will.
Thank you everyone at Mahekal for one of the best weeks we have ever had !
And, Thank you G and A for choosing Mahekal for your wedding !! Awesome choice!!!

Room Tip: If you want a room near the Aventura restaurant/pool are, make sure there will not be a wedding. It...
