We drove from Cancun to Playa without any idea where we wanted to stay. Randomly we turned down a street and found this place which is lucky and exactly what we were looking for. We had looked around town for awhile and nothing was what I wanted. I didn't want a huge beach resort hotel. I wanted something more private and interesting and was pleasantly suprised. We stayed in 16A which has a view of the ocean and one of the more private porch areas.
The food was OK.
It's cheap off season.
The people are really nice :)

We just came back from our stay at Mahekal. We were a little dissapointed when we were taken to our "ocean view" room. It was not really an ocen view...but I guess that is their idea of it. It would be nice if they respected your request when it comes to having the type of bed you want. We didn´t like having to queen beds instead of one king.
If you are going to book it, consider paying the extra money for a beach front casita. They are totally worth it. Unfortunately, there was not one available during the days we were staying there.
The food is great, but we weren´t impressed with the dinner. Besides, there are so many good places to eat out on Playa, we suggest you go out at night and try them.
The beds were a little hard and the water in the shower takes a while to get warm.
You can bring in your own drinks, that you can buy in a little store that is located 1 block from the hotel.
After all we really enjoyed it, because it has a great beach area and we loved Playa del Carmen. It is a town with so much charm and with people from so many different countries. tip: do not exchange all your dollars at the airport, they have such a low rate and you will get a lot more money if you wait to exchange them at Playa. There are several places where you can get pesos. Also you can get a bus (ADO) from the airport to Playa del Carmen. Then take a taxi to the hotel. It is around 20 dlls round trip. Enjoy!!!

Mahekal is a beautiful, comfortable place to stay in Playa del Carmen. The casitas and grounds are gorgeous and well-tended. This is a VERY clean place. The housekeepers do a fantastic job. Same for bellmen, front desk, security and the restaurant staff. The location is perfect: on an absolutely perfect beach and 5 or 10 minutes walking to many nice restaurants and shops. Taxis are plentiful, safe and inexpensive in Playa.

I was there with my 16 year old daughter and we two ladies felt absolutely safe during our entire visit. Playa is a safe place. Use common sense just as you would in any city; we found Playa to be safer than our hometown of Milwaukee.

So many people warn us or ask us about safety in Mexico. It is a problem in the north, but if you are thinking about Cancun/Playa, just come. Don't believe all the talk from those who do not know.

We are just coming back from a stay at Mahekal. The hotel grounds and the bungalows are very nice as previous reviewers have said.

But there are swarms of mosquitoes!! It is close to impossible to sit outside in front of your bungalow in the evenings or mornings. You'll be eaten alive by mosquitoes! Some of them are even active during the day or make their way into the bungalows. This seriously ruined the fun of of staying there for us. What's the point of having a bungalow on the beach with a nice deck and a hammock if you have to lock yourself up inside armed with insect repellent? After getting 40+ bites (on one person!) on the first night we went to buy insect repellent first thing the next morning at a pharmacy a few blocks away (corner 38 and 30 av). That reduced the number of new bites we got each day but it remained a significant problem during our stay with a substantial number of bites every day and the inconvenience of repeated applications of the repellent.

It would have been nice if the front desk would have told us about the mosquitoes when we checked in. We would have been able to use the repellent right from the start. Interestingly, I noticed that the front desk staff has a bottle of repellent that they are using frequently. Nice!

We told the lady at the front desk about the mosquito problem we are having but she didn't care much. We asked if we could move to a bungalow that has more of a breeze but she said that these bungalows would be in a higher category which required an extra charge and she can't say if it helps anyway. When I asked if I could see an alternative bungalow she refused to hand me the keys and called the bell boy so he could accompany me. I got the keys after more discussion but I was shocked that apparently I was not trustworthy enough to get keys for 10 minutes to look at a room. That reflects the idea of customer service the front desk seems to have.

In contrast to the front desk, the rest of the staff was very friendly and did go out of their way to make our stay enjoyable.

Dear guest,

We are very sorry to hear that your stay at our Resort was not as enjoyable as it could have been. Rainy season just started this month of June, after 5 months without it; the rain brings the mosquitoes in our tropical environment at the Caribbean, and well this is the same rain which also helps us to keep our jungle and mangroves healthy, so our guests may enjoy our green and natural surroundings.

On the other hand our staff at the front desk, should have warned you about this important fact, so you could have taken your precautions in your room, please receive our sincere apologies for this and from now on we are making sure to communicate this important information, and also we will offer repellent for the use of our guests. Complete relaxation and contentment of our guests in our natural surroundings is our main goal, so we will duplicate our efforts to fumigate the resort.

We would like to thank you for taking the time to write this review, the opinion of our guests is the foundation of our improvements in our service. All comments expressed in this space are very valuable for us and makes us grow.

In case you need any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us at: info@mahekalplaya.com
