Reviewed May 9, 2013

We are from the UK and this was our first trip to Mexico, we stayed at Iberostar Quetzal (Same as the Iberostar Tucan, they share facilities and restaurants) from 21st April - 6th May. This holiday was booked a year ago and I have to say I was worried when the trip advisor rating started to drop as our holiday got nearer. Once there we found we shouldn't have worried at all :) Here is my honest review of our Hotel.

Check In.
Upon arrival check in was very quick and easy and a cold fruity drink was waiting which was needed after a 2 hour transfer from the airport (A matter that WILL be taken up with Thomas Cook who stated 40 minutes!!), I had emailed a couple of weeks in advance requesting that our friends (who travelled with us but booked their own holiday) had rooms near us and we were all next door to each other in block 25.
The Room (2545)
Top floor and facing the Riu Hotel next door, it has a peacock that liked to visit! Some people have moaned about the decore...Perhaps they forget they are in Mexico and it is known for bright colours? This is a reasonably priced Mexican Jungle themed hotel, if you want 5 star plus luxury with all mod-cons then pay another £100 or more a night and go somewhere else! The room is plenty big enough, more than enough shelves, wardrobe space and a safe. A lovely big shower with Shower Gel and Shampoo provided, flat screen TV with cable and quite a few english channels. Our room was kept spotless by the maid for the whole two weeks, the fridge was re-stocked everyday and fresh towels were available everyday if you wanted them. We got lovely towel art each day too :) My partner found the bed hard so at 7pm on the way to dinner i asked at Reception if they could arrange a bed topper for the next day. How surprised were we when we returned to our room that same night to find they had already done it!!

The Food
What can I say..... Anyone who says the food is bland, boring, cold, repetative etc must be one seriously fussy eater!! There were 7 in our group and everyone of us found something different to eat on a daily basis. Everything was lovely from Breakfast to Dinner. The speciality restaurants were very good, my favourite was the Tropical, followed by Italian, Mexican, Steakhouse and Japanese. Service was best in the Mexican (The waiter was amazing and couldn't do enough), followed by Tropical, Italian, Japanese and Steakhouse. You can even find food (Pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs, chips etc) after midnight in the Tucan buffet restaurant which was great after a few drinks!

The Drinks/Bars
Anyone who says the drinks are watered down must be a serious alcoholic!! I am not a regular drinker but I do love an occasional G & T. In both the Lobby Bar and Entertainment Bar they had Tanqueray Gin which in the UK is expensive Gin! They also had Smirnoff Vodka and Bacardi Rum. All you have to do is ask the bar staff for the brand you like and you will get it. Measures were more like a treble (If not more!) in one glass so be warned :) The restaurant bars only had local gin (Not nice) so I got my Tanqueray at the Lobby bar and took it with me to dinner :)

The Pool/Beach
AMAZING!! The caribbean sea is just beautiful! Both Sea and Pool were like jumping in a bath! Sunbeds shouldn't be reserved but people do do it. To get a good bed under a palapa or by the pool you need to get your towel out by 7.30am latest.... I did laugh when our usual beds (under the same palapas for over a week) were taken by some Germans who put their towels out on the beds before the sunrise at 6am!!! We didn't use the waitress service for the pool bar we prefered to get our own drinks but the girls always asked when passing. The ice-cream is to die for!! You must try the Coconut flavour and the Cheese & Blackberry. They also have a 'Mr Whippy' type machine on the Hotdog/Burger stall by the beach. We were not hassled by beach traders or staff at any time.

The Staff
Just BRILLIANT!! All the staff here are fantastic, nothing is too much and always done with a smile. The whole team of Star frends work so hard from morning to night they are simply amazing! Special mention to the following.... Santos in the Lobby bar for always remembering my Tanqueray Tonic from the first night we arrived, Rafael in the Breakfast Buffet who remembered that Sharon had a cup of Tea wth her breakfast, Mauricio from Star Friends (King of Zumba and defnately the Energiser Bunny!!) and Gerado (Star Friends) for making us laugh so much when cheating at Water Polo :)

The Grounds
We saw Howler Monkeys, Peacocks, Peahens, Agoutis, Iguana, Giant Tortoise, Squirrels, Chickens in the grounds and Angel fish in the sea while wading up to our waist. The jungle path was not good for high heels and the lighting was dim but why would you wear heels in the jungle and have bright lights?! The outer paths around the outside of the hotel were adequately lit up and level, more suited to heels but the wooden walkways to the buffet and bars on the Quetzal side have gaps so I would recommend flat shoes or practice walking on tiptoes in your heels like I did.

We had the best time ever, we will definately return and can hghly recommend this hotel. Please do not take too much notice of the negative comments on here, some people want a 6 star holiday for 4 star money ;) To the Iberostar management....Your staff are the best!!

NB... These people work so very hard so please remember to tip for good service, the maids, bar staff, waiters and waitress's do appreciate it. (We tipped anything from 20 to 100 peso but not everytime we were served)

Room Tip: Block 25 was easy to get to/from breakfast/Dinner and the Entertainment Bar. Easy to get to the poo...

This is my review:

Location: Near Playa del Carmen. You can even walk to "la 5° avenida" (main street) if you love to walk, if not, a taxi ride cost like 5 usd.

Beach: Very very nice beach, calm sea, a lot of sea shells, warm crystal water. And if you walk to the south you will find amazing rocks formations that simulate little bays, that was amazing!

Rooms: As all the Iberostar hotels, they always have good rooms with the basics and maybe, a little more, as a couch, plasma tv, desk, mini bar with water, sodas, cokes and a few beers. The only dislike in my room was a hairdryer with, obviously hair, that wasn't mine.....

Hotel: The resort is perfect for the zone, it make you feel like you are in the middle of the jungle, with a lot of vegetation, palm trees and some animals like iguanas, coatis (tropical badger), peacocks and even monkeys. They have some wood paths over water with fishes, ducks, turtles and flamingos.

Animation Crew: Exxxxxxxcellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They give you a lot of activities, they are always smiling and doing things for your distraction and fun, like mechanic bull ride, dancing in the beach, sports and stuff like that. Lara from Argentina is my special mention!

Noises: Bad thing that the Hotel can't control is the fact that now, the side hotel is on reshuffle, so at 8 am you will hear the machines workings, it's not the fault of the hotel as I said, but if you like to sleep late, get some earplugs.

Also, be advise that if you stay in the 2500 or 2600 rooms they are infront of the theater, so the music and noises will go on until 11:30 pm.

Food: The buffet restaurant sometimes very good, and sometimes just not too good. For the breakfast they have fruits, hams, salamis, cheese, juices, waffles, hot cakes, eggs, milk, you know, the regular food that you will find in any all inclusive hotel. For the lunch you will find hamburgers and hot dogs, Late you will find meat, pasta, fish, salads.

I just went to two specialty restaurants. Sushi and Meat.

Sushi: Great chef show, but terrible food, lack of any flavor, not good, don't go.
Meat. Very very nice.

Pool: As I always said, if I'm on the beach why should I go to a pool? But ok, if you have kids they will love the pool.

Conclusion: This is a good hotel for those who want to spend some time on a very nice beach, very safe, veeery clean (just the hairdryer stuff) at a nice price. If you have a little more money, I would like to recommend the big brother hotel of this, Iberostar Paraiso Lindo or Paraismo Maya, they are far away from the Quetzal, but the food and the peace was amazing (if you want to check it, I have a review of that hotel).

This is not an ultra high quality hotel, but is a very nice one, if you are picky, please spend more money and go to grand velas, the royal (I have a review for perfection), mayokoba, the tides, viceroy or any other, but if you want to spend some good relaxing time go to Iberostar Quetzal, and have an amazing time!!!

Tip!!!!!!!!!!!! As I always say, please give a tip to the people over there, I know, it's an all inclusive, but the people live because the tips. I saw a couple that gave 1 usd for a good service on the meat restaurant.......... that's not fair, believe me, the waiter does not earn more than 400 usd montly.......

P.S. Just for those who like cigars like me, don't buy any of them from the beach, they are fake, also in Playa del Camen the cigars from the NON Cigar store are FAKE. If you want to feel like a rich movie star with your Cohiba or Montecristo purchased on the beach, you will find yourself silly with a fake high price cigar. I would recommend, if you don't want to spend much money on a good cigar, go to OXXO (little red/yellow store) and buy some mexican original cigars called TE AMO, for 40 pesos, like 2.8 usd.

We decided to go to Mexico as it was our honeymoon so we wanted something a bit different to the standard holiday. This was a perfect choice and could not be faulted.
The entertainment staff were brilliant, the rooms were good and perfect location. We went to all 5 restaurants, Japanese was our favourite! The Buffett was also brilliant and you could get food or drink in one of the restaurants pretty much 24/7. They also had a burger bar by the beach which my husband loved, I preferred the ice cream stall!
This is certainly a place I would recommend and we are already planning a return visit.

I love the people in Mexico we used USA transfers they were GREAT! The hotel was nice the room was nice the staff was GREAT. The food was ok the better meal was breakfast. The drinks at the front bar were GREAT, the other bars were ok. The fridge in our room was not cold we had lots of beer so we put it on ice. Our room was always clean and the staff was very nice. Our TV did not work but we were not in there much so we did not call on it. We went with 7 other couples and all in all we had a great time. The beach was ok but they could have keep it a little cleaner. Entertainment was ok.

Room Tip: We took rolls of ones for tips we also took pesos lots of them, the staff is great so we tipped. We...

I'm a little late writing this review, but this place was amazing! We stayed March 2011, I know it says December 2012, that's not right. Great beach, great resort and great staff! We walked into town one day, it was about a 10 minute walk, not too bad. It's actually 2 resorts combined in one location, we never had a problem with service, we made reservations for 3 of the restaurants there. The lunch buffet by the pool/beach was amazing! My girlfriend had the chips and salsa/guac everyday! It was that good. The nightly entertainment was good, a lot of guest interaction. The room was nice, had a mini fridge with beers and waters, 24 hour room service as well. All in all, this was a good choice for our first trip to Mexico and we keep talking about going back!

This is the second time my husband and I have stayed at the Iberostar Quetzal. This time we booked an oceanfront suite. We really like the suite. It was by all the entertainment and we didn’t have to walk far during the day but at night everything was far and dark. The suite was a nice change of scenery for us, compared to our previous visit in a standard room but I have to say, I don’t believe we will be booking a suite again. We really missed our standard room. Reason being; you are right by everything in the day which if you don’t mind the noise it’s fine. We didn’t mind the noise, but really missed the whole experience of the Quetzal. By that I mean the jungle aspect of it. I wanted my morning wake up call by the howler monkeys I experienced with every trip We really loved our stay at the Quetzal, we always do, so take what I put about the room in perspective. If you want a full on ocean view all the time, go with the suite. If you want a jungle aspect at night because you are at the beach all day, go with the standard room.
As far as the food, it does get a bit repetitive but you won’t go hungry. We have made our reservations at the al la cartes and at times didn’t like what they had to offer…so we ate at the buffet. At the buffet they will always have something for everyone.
My husband and I are BIG foodies. I married a chef (I am a travel agent. We make a great pair) The food isn’t the most amazing but this is an all inclusive resort. You go for the convenience of not worrying where you are going to eat and if you want to go to a fancy dinner in town you can. But I have to say the ice cream is to die for and so are the donuts! (Hey diet is out the door for vacation)
The staff is hands down AMAZING! The gentleman at the lobby bar, forgive me I believe his name starts with an A, has been there for six years and is always welcoming and has a smile. We also went to the lobby bar at night and we were treated amazing. One night we were having a great time at the lobby bar talking it up with our friends that went with us along with others we just met and it dawned on me…for the last three hours I haven’t asked anyone to fill my wine and I feel amazing! Until I see the bartender filling my glass in the corner of my eye. Now that is service!
I did hit the gym because I was down in the area for ten days. The gym is nice but it was hard for me to locate the first time. For anyone going it’s the orange small building with the palpa on the top. It’s on the Tucan side but I went round and round. I had no idea where it was but it mirrors the tennis courts. Good work out music and the equipment is nice.
Everything is amazing here. The pool is bigger than any other pool in Vegas. The people are kind. You’re in a gated community, it’s an all inclusive. What else do you need? I must say we booked the Quetzal for six days and then headed to the Iberostar Grand for four days. For future vacations, I will book at the Iberostar Quetzal while relaxing and experiencing the area, I mean doing excursions, going to town, etc. But if you want the full pampered resort experience with a personal butler, cabana attendant, lobster at every meal, caviar at breakfast I would head to the Grand.
To sum it up we will be returning to the Iberostar Quetzal time and time again but will spend a couple days at the Iberostar Grand just for the Grand experience. Like I said AMAZING, been around the world and this is our favorite place, did I say amazing, oh yeah and amazing!

Room Tip: All rooms are good but we perfer a standard room for the jungle feel

We stayed at the Quetzal 13th April for a 2 week stay and had the most wonderful time. This is the 4th Iberostar. Hotel we have stayed in and it exceeded our expectations. We visited all al a carte restaurants except for Mexican and we found the Steak restaurant our favourite which we payed a second visit to. The Jungle setting was amazing,To see the monkeys, Iguanas, Agouti and Toucans and many more birds wandering around the hotel grounds was wonderful but because of the jungle setting beware of the mosquito bites which had a feast on us during our stay. The beach was stunning with plenty of water sport and weekly beach parties to enjoy. Orders for drinks taken at your sun loungers so you didn't have to move far. The beach restaurant was ideal for lunch with Burgers to die for. The buffet restaurant in the evening served something for everyone we were never disappointed hence the weight gain. We spent most of our evenings in the lobby bar where you received excellent service from the bar waitresses who made sure you never had an empty glass. The cocktails were a treat and had everything you wanted. We had the bicycle tour around Playacar in the morning which was a nice way to work off your breakfast feast, We visited Playa Del Carmen which was a nice stroll about 45 minutes away where you could visit 5th Avenue for shopping but we found it more expensive than back at home. We met some lovely people and had the most fun holiday, having already visited the Dominican Republic and Cuba we can honestly say Mexico has been the best yet. We won't hesitate to book another Iberostar in the future wherever it may be and we would definitely return here once we have recovered from the long flight to get there.
