“nice location for a destination wedding”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2012

My son recently got married in playa at the iberostar quetzal. The weather, beach, and the water were perfect. The hotel room was very nice--although I had to ask 3 times to convince them that my phone wasn't working properly. It's an all inclusive location, which is nice. The food and drinks were average, although we had a fantastic time 1 night at the japanese restaurant. highly recommend that experience. The Italian restaurant was disappointing, honestly. The nightly entertainment was ok--though i thought the magician was actually very good for this kind of setting. Oh, and the jungle with all the animals is really a lot of fun. the hotel. is in a nice location, though probably too far away for a way into town. easy enough to get to from the airport. overall very good. food quality would probably be the way to improve the rating.

On November 8th we left Boston in the midst of a nasty storm. We flew to Mexico via Jet Blue but didn't think we'd get off the ground. However after de-icing the plane we were off on schedule and it was a great flight. Arrived in Cancun on time with great connections to the resort thanks to Apple's ground transport.

Arrived at the resort at the exact time that I thought we would and were warmly greeted by Luz, the best Public Relations person around! Also greeted by several staff we met previously and several we were meeting for the first time. I can't say enough about the staff at this resort. They are all so warm and caring. Thanks of course first to Luz for everything she did to help us make this trip special but also to Sr. Bosque, Saskia, Luis,Daniel, Francisco, Mauricio, Dennis, Suemy, Samuel and so many others.

The food at the resort, I believe, was better this year than last year. Lots of choices with a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables and more than enough choices on the buffet. We had dinner at the Japanese one night and it was really good. Unfortunately we had a chef in training so we didn't get the full benefit of the "cooking show" but he did his best and gets an A for effort. I'm sure when we go back he'll have lots of experience under his belt. We also ate at the Steakhouse which was really good. Our waiter Nataneal was his usual charming self and sang and smiled his way through the evening. Our third restaurant choice was the Italian and that also was very good. We ate their twice and also ate at the Steakhouse twice.

The grounds at the resort are better than ever. They have made some changes which really add to the charm of the jungle. There's a massage hut, an animal shelter, some updates on the pools and waterfalls where the animals are and different lighting on the jungle paths for easier nighttime walks.
There are so many animals to watch and enjoy and we had so much fun sitting on our balcony and watching the monkeys. The peacock perched on our balcony every night until the maid put water bottles where they were to discourage this use. As you can imagine with three nesting peacocks there was more than a little cleaning issue!! As for the monkeys, we had occasional visits from them and they would sit on the rail and check everything out. There was even a mother with her baby on her chest which was a real treat to see.
We ventured out a couple of times on side trips. One to the Cozumel Bar Hop Bus, which was so much fun (review posted) once to the Jungle Spa for a massage (review posted) and once to the Jungle Place which I haven't done a review for yet but which was awesome and again one of the highlights of our trip. We also went to Cancun one day to see the Iberostar Cancun which was beautiful but we like our jungle and wouldn't switch.

People always talk about the hard beds and the low power hairdryers. Well, we didn't find a problem with either. Our mattress was a pillow top and I'm sure was updated since last November. No issues at all sleeping on that. My husband didn't even ask for a mattress topper because he was so comfortable. Also, I believe the hairdryers have been updated and there was no problem with that.

The beach is still beautiful and the pool was not too cold at all. There were not many people in it but the beach was pretty crowded. The pool bar was inconsistent with the crowds. Some days it was pretty busy and others were quiet. Still a really fun place to go and sit and meet new people.

People ask why I keep going back to the same place and the answer is simple, mainly it's the staff and secondly it's the setting. My husband was sick one day and the staff was overwhelmingly concerned and offered a special diet but he didn't even want to eat. It all worked out and he was fine within 24 hours but I was just so impressed with the staff reactions. Thanks again, Luz, and Guest Services for taking such good care of us. You know we will be back.

Apple Vacations shares a bit of this praise for the timely manner of transportation to and from the airport. Diego, the Apple Rep at the resort was great.
Thanks, everyone for everything and we're looking forward to visit #12!!!!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a jungle setting and mid way between the lobby and beach.

I understand that the Quetzal - and Tucan - were the first hotels built at Playacar and so they are now a little dated. However due to a twenty six hour Thomas Cook flight delay we also spent a night at the Iberostar Parisio Maya just along the coast. The Parisio Maya is modern and huge but with exactly the same layout on the site and in the rooms etc. as the Quetzal - but there is something missing. Don't know what it is but at the Quetzal there is a 'KIND OF MAGIC'. Given the choice we would choose the Quetzal every time. In fact we we have already decided that we will be going back again next year. We are are retired couple in our early sixties and we have travelled extensively thoughout the world for more than forty years staying in everything from B&B's to 5 star UK/Far East/Caribbean/US hotels. For the money you won't be disappointed with the Quetzal. I find it difficult to understand how a few of the reviewers on here could find fault with the buffet. It is not usually our choice and we normally try to blag a few extra nights in the speciality restaurants but this was not the case at the Quetzal. The choice was great - the service was great and the food was fresh and varied and hot and first class. The speciality restaurants were also very good with a special mention for the steaks in the 'Steak House' which were just as good as the food in the worldwide 'Outback' chaIn of steakhouses. I am not going in to a long review of this hotel because it is really all down to your own experience at the time and place and what your own expectations are so here are a few tips/pros/cons:

Tips: Book a Junior suite. It is the only way you will get a full on sea view and for the extra money it is well worth it.

Pros: All the staff are amazing. Don't have to tip but the service is fantastic and the odd 20 pesos or one US$ goes a long way. Even when the hotel is full - it was US Thanksgiving when we were there - it never ever seems to be busy. You can always get a table in the lobby bar which is a nice place for a relaxing drink. The beach. The 'jungle' and the animals. It's a great place to chill out.

Cons: Can't really think of any. It is getting a bit old but they keep it very clean and well tended and then you do have the 'Magic'.

If you are not sure. Give it a go. You won't regret it.

Room Tip: Don't know what the standard rooms are like but it seems they are slightly shorter than the juni...

stayed at this hotel late july for 2 weeks. its absolutely beautiful the grounds are gorgeous and the beach amazing. have stayed twice in cancun but this area is much better. throughout the grounds are various forms of wildlife. they have parrots, monkeys, agoutis, peacocks, iguanas and much more. they are so tame you can feed them we had peacocks sleeping on our balcony because we fed them early in the evening. the hotel is built into the jungle so there are some mossies around, wear good repellant and you be fine. the architect has thought everything out with walking to breakfast over the jungle with streams and wildlife below you!! the only draw back is the hotel is all open air in the main areas and only has ceiling fans because of this so it does get hot!! dont let it out you off!! if your going there email the hotel and ask for a jungle facing room, so that you get the best views. from our balcony was a waterfall and pond with flamingos, ducks, cranes and agoutuis in the ground. absolutely amazing. if your going june/july time try to go mid july as thats the time the whale sharks are travelling through the ocean!! book a trip to swim with them they are AMAZING!!!!!

Room Tip: jugle facing room

We just got back from a week at the Quetzal. It was my family's first time down to the Playacar area. We were a group of 6 adults and 2 children so a total of 3 rooms.

The place is overall pretty amazing, but there were some annoyances. We booked our rooms about 4 months out from the Mr. Iberostar website as the prices were a total of $600 cheaper. It's frustrating that they won't honor requests for a certain building ahead of time. They say they will note it down, but nothing is guaranteed. So when we got there we didn't get the building with connecting rooms. They put us in building 26 facing the courtyard, which must be the loudest building on the property. The noise didn't cease until 11:20pm each night. The noise is so loud that you have to speak louder to have a normal conversation. So if you are a light sleeper then bring ear plugs. We immediately asked for a different building, but they said they were at full capacity.

Check-in and check-out is fairly easy other than trying to get a certain building you want. The staff and star friends throughout the whole resort are A+. I only had one bad experience with an employee. We tried renting out a kayak and the young female employee with her chest pierced tried to sell a guy in front of us all these different packages for about 15 minutes and wouldn't even acknowledge us waiting. It would have taken no time at all to hand us the form to fill out. Other than that all employees were exceptional.

Rooms: We had three rooms. Throughout the trip 2 of the 3 rooms smelled of sewer gas. So we had to keep the bathroom doors closed in those rooms. The large flat screen TVs were nice and there were a handful of channels in English. The safe is large and easy to use. The stocked fridge is refilled every two days. Yes, the beds are hard. Only one of the eight of us thought that it was too hard. The pillows were a bit too thick for me, so if you're a stomach sleeper then bring a pillow from home. We were on the 3rd floor. We saw the monkeys every single day. One day they were on our balcony. They try to get your attention by dragging the chairs around with their mouth. We ordered evening room service every other night or so. We pretty much stuck to the tacos and brownies as the rest wasn't that great. The hair dryers were outdated and not strong enough. All the rooms only have showers so it was a pain not being able to give the kiddos a bath.

Food: The two main buffets had some pretty good food. It was always the same food so if you're spending more than a week then the food at the two main buffets might get old. The two lunch buffets down near the ocean didn't really cut it for me. There definitely wasn't much variety at those two. For the ala cartes we ate at the Italian, Japanese, and Steak House. We made reservations for those a month before the trip via email. The Italian and Japanese were both inside with AC and the Steak House restaurant wasn't too hot as it was November and the evenings were chilly.

Italian: We all agreed that none of us like the entrees at the Italian place. I could barely get my calzone down. Most of the group liked the Italian place for its appetizers and dessert.

Japanese: This restaurant was everyone’s favorite. The ambiance was top notch and so was the food. The chefs put on a show for you throughout the meal. The sushi and dessert here was also good.

Steak House: This was our groups least favorite of the ala cartes. We all found our meats mediocre at best. The two of us that ordered ribs didn't even finish them. The appetizers and desserts were also quite lack luster.

Evening Entertainment: It's very loud till 11:20pm. I thought the entertainment was fairly decent. Smokers have their own section, but with the wind it can still blow in easily to the main seating. Throughout the resort you can get a hookah for $26.

Drinks: They were all very tasty. They can make you whatever you want even if it's not on the menu.

Internet: Wi-Fi only in the lobby. $3 for 15 min. They also have a computer lab attached to both lobbies. You can walk 7 minutes from the main gate to Starbucks and get a receipt with a code. They code worked the entire week and even at the Starbucks in Playa Del Carmen. If you need the internet for work or are addicted then my recommendation is before evening arriving at the resort ask your taxi to take you to the Centro Maya mall, which is right in front of Playacar. Go to the TelCel shop. It's in the middle front. Go to the front counter and get a ticket and wait in line about 5-10 minutes. Ask for a sim card and 1gb of data for a week. All of this will only cost you $26. You have to make sure you have a sim slot on your phone and that your phone is unlocked before leaving your country. If the tech rep at Telcel doesn't speak good English then ask for one that does.

Beach/Pool: I've travelled extensively and let me just say that this beach has some of the purest sands and brilliant colors. Half of the days I did notice large amounts of washed up garbage, so I'm curious if they clean the beach each morning. The temperature of the water was perfect, maybe 80F? It was never hard to find loungers. You rent the sun umbrellas out from the towel check-out building. The large pool was pretty cold. You have to swim out to get to the hot tub and the hot tub wasn't heated all week. It was pretty cold every evening and we all mentioned it would have been nice if the hot tub was running and didn't have to swim through cold water to get to it. The pools are open till 8pm, but the towel service closes at 6pm.

Chichen Itza: You can easily rent a car and get a guide on arrival. We rented an 11 passenger van and had no problems. Most all car rental companies will drop the rental off at your hotel. Make note that if you don't rent the vehicle through the hotel then they won't let the rental company through the main hotel gate so you have to meet them out on the street. Driving to Chichen Itza was very easy as the roads were very well marked. Make sure you start out on a full tank of gas as it gets desolate out there. We had no problems with crooked cops pulling us over. On our return trip we went via Coba/Tulum. Our initial plan was to fit in the Coba Ruins and a Cenote. We didn't however leave the resort till 6:30am and the days passes quickly. So we skipped Coba and the Grand Cenote and squeezed in Tulum just before it closed. If driving and trying to see more than just Chichen in a day then leave the resort no later than 5:45am.

5th Ave: Walking the shopping street of 5th ave is highly recommended. The street seems to go on forever. We got a couple's 1hr massage for $50 at Hotel Azul. The massage was so-so. Make sure to go back and look at the room before paying. We did see some creeper guys with a white tiger lurking in the shadows near 5th and 12th.

Overall: We would go back to the Iberostar Quetzal/Tucan in a heartbeat. Hopefully they can work out a few kinks to improve.

Room Tip: 3rd floor for monkeys

Just got back from a mini-vacation at this hotel Nov. 21-Nov. 25, 2012. 2 adults, 2 children, stayed in building 23- a bit noisy at night but closer to the pool/beach/2 restaurants.

Pros:The staff was very friendly, clean rooms, good shower/hot water, good nightly entertainment and sports activities, okay room service

Cons: VERY hard old mattresses/beds, lumpy-hard pillows, very dated bedding etc., NO internet available in hotel rooms, mediocre food and drinks, ok pool- nothing special

Overall just an "okay" vacation. Not crazy about the food choices and quality at the buffet. The restaurants are ok- not great. I would say that the Steak restaurant was the best. Very disappointed with the lack of internet services...only available when seated at the lobby. The beds were super uncomfortable- even after asking for them to provide and using a mattress pad. Not very ideal for sleeping in. The main pool is very big and pretty but there are no special features for kids to enjoy. The water/ swim up bar area/pool was very dirty. We stayed in building 23 and it was quite noisy at night. I would recommend building 20 if you are a light sleeper or want quiet- right by the beach. Also, although the hotel is in a nice area- it is outside of Playa del Carmen- so you would need to taxi there if you plan to take Ferries or tours.

I would not stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Rooms in bldg. 20 & 21 are quiter

This is our third time at an iberostar. This time we went for my parents 50 year anniversary. We had a group of 13 with ages from 5, teens, twenties to 69 years old and every age in between. This resort offers something for every age group. Weather you want to go explore outside the hotel or just stay in the resort! I've written a review on this property before so I will hit the changes since last time. Hope it helps other travels.

Pros. Rooms are very clean. The grounds are beautiful. Resturants are nice. The beach has been fully restored since my last vist. The sand is gorgeous. They have added umbrellas, you can check one out where you get your beach towels. Plenty of beach chairs, although you need to go down early to reserve them. The staff was excellent. From the bar tenders to the wait staff to house keeping. The scuba diving team was fabulous. The hotel was full but the where able to get all our rooms in the same building. The paint in the rooms and outside buildings has been refreshed. Overall very well done. We had a blast. AI's can be so, so, but iberostars do a great job making sure you enjoy yourself!

Cons. Everyone in the resort was sick. Five of the thirteen of us were very sick. Everyone we talked to had gotten the same thing. This is at no fault of the resort, all it takes is one person in a plane or resort to get the stomach flu and it spreads like wild fire. The doctor on site gave us four perscriptions that kept the rest of us healthy. Just a warning if you are going anywhere not just here, remember your hand sanitizer and use it often, think how many people touch one spoon at a buffet.....moving on the food is average at the buffet. They could use to step it up a little. Also the star friends were good but not as outgoing and personable as our other two visits. We hope they get the star staff back up to the original standards, the star staff is one of the reasons we keep returning.

All in all this really is a gem of a property and as the busy travel season is upons us I'm sure they will get the kinks worked out. We will return again.
