Visited this hotel from 8/1 - 23/1 and only just recovering. I will start with the good bits as this won't take long, the sea is warm, the weather is nice and the locals and staff are friendly.
Now the rest, the rooms smell damp, the food is of poor quality and often undercooked or cold.
The main pool and beach near the lunchtime restaurant are unusable due to the smell coming from the bin storage behind the building.
The Chinese restaurant is poor at best but the icing on the cake is the steak restaurant, nobody can ruin a steak can they ? Oh yes they can, I had one mouthful and couldn't eat anymore, it was like stewing steak, shocking !!!!!! The only civilised eating area is the Italian, same food but a bit less crowded than the rest of the hotel.
This hotel is big with a lot of people, so make sure you get up and put your towel down before 7am or you will struggle to get a sun bed.
Not sure what the problem was but a few people were ill while we were there, couldn't pin it to anything in particular, swimming pool, food or general bug but let's just say your Imodium won't deal with it, but there is a doctor on site.
This was our first visit to Mexico and it will be our last, why travel 11 hours to arrive in Benidorm !!

First impressions were very good and we were made to feel very welcome on arrival. Our room had that 'damp smell' at first but this disappeared after a day or so. There is something for everyone at this hotel, very relaxed atmosphere and extremely helpful and happy staff. Great for families or couples. Food is very good and even the fussiest of eaters would eat well here. The beach is fantastic and sea water is warm. Playa del Carmen is about half an hour walk along the lovely beach with plenty to see and do. Señor Frog's beach bar is a laugh! Thomson trips are expensive but Coco Bongo is a great if crazy night out! If you are going to this hotel you will be sure to have an great holiday. Enjoy it - wish it was me!

This was our 2nd stay at the Yucatan. the 1st being in 2007 before the refurb. Both holidays have been amazing. The staff are so friendly and helpful despite some people speaking to them quite rudely at times. There was always something to eat. The Mexican restaurant was ok, starters was the best bit to be honest. The Steakhouse was our favourite, beautiful steak both times we visited. And the Italian next to the buffet was really good too, went there 4 times in the end!! Seriously, if you could not find something to eat you should not go on holiday!! We were in block 5 by the pool which suited us. Be careful as the walkway with sunbeds just in front of the rooms is known as mosquito alley. We never usually have a problem with mosquito's and only found out it's nickname towards the end of the holiday when my husband was "machine gunned" by the little buggers and we spent most of our time there.
This was actually our 3rd time to Mexico and have done a few trips. This year after hearing so many good things about it we wnet to Coco Bongo's and it is true what people say, you cannot describe it you just have to experience it!! Fantastic night.
The major disappoint with this holiday was not Mexico or the Riu Yucatan but Thomsons. We went out on the Dreamliner, amazing!! Loved it, no need to upgrade. However there was a delay on our last day. Up to date information was coming through from home. The reps were hours behind. We found out there was a problem with the dreamliner and we would be going home on a different plane. The dreamliner was one of the main factors for booking this holiday. The flight home after a 9 hour delay was painful, Thomsons had rep's at the airport handing out memo's telling us the details for when we made a claim and another telling us we would receive £20 compensation (not even each!!) direct into our bank account or through our agent. Still waiting. In fact still waiting for some response from our letter of complaint as the insurance Thomsons sells you only covers delays of 12hours + ....handy that hey!
Thomsons need to refurbish their cusomer relations department as a matter of urgency as this is awful.

Room Tip: block 5 middle floor, not the quitest but we liked it!

We decided to stay at this hotel, because it looked a very high standard when looking through the brochure. We bought a package holiday with Thomson. When we arrived at the hotel and to our room, we were slightly disappointed as although the photos were representative of the hotel and accommodation, it didn't have the luxurious feel that we were expecting. I think this was mainly due to the stark lighting, the acoustics in the restaurants and the general ambience of the hotel. The room smelt damp, although we could't see any signs of damp. The restaurants were all of a good standard and the staff were efficient, friendly and very good. Food was good, although the menu in the international buffet didn't seem to change much in the 10 days we were there. The hotel was extremely clean and the pools and surrounding areas in very good condition. The beach was stunning, although one day there were no sun beds left at all by 10am, so be sure to get up early to ensure you get a bed. It was a very busy hotel, I would say too busy. The Yucatan peninsula is stunning and every one is so friendly. Although the hotel wasn't as luxurious as we were expecting, it was still of a very good standard and we had a very good holiday. I would recommend this, if you are looking for a slightly above average hotel.

We have stayed at Hotels all over the world and not been disappointed until we stayed at this hotel last week! The rooms are far too basic. Riu are in the process of refurbishing all their hotels and destroying any quality fittings and furnishings in the process. No arm chairs just wooden seats in rooms. Nast cheap furnishings - not the standard you would expect of a Platinum property.

Also, the resort was like a zoo and crowded, particularly the beach. The guests of two neighbouring Riu Hotels that don't have beach access use the Yucatan beach and restaurants. Yucatan guests pay far higher fees thereby subsidising guests at the other two hotels who pay far less! Room for thought! Whilst the variety of food was extensive out was frequently cold and left uncovered with flies all over it, particularly at the restaurant near the Beach. What also surprised us was there there were no lifts at all on the complex.

Staff were friendly and helpful. We will NOT use Riu again if this standard is to be the benchmark which is very sad. Book at your own risk !!

Room Tip: BOOK A SUITE IF YOU MUST! quality of rooms and furnishings slightly better standard.

Me and my wife visited here with our 4 year old son for Christmas and new year.
We had a fantastic time! The staff were fantastic and they made you feel that anything was possible and not to much trouble.
The food was a very good standard and plenty to choose. The bars were open at 1030am and never had to wait to long before the very hardworking staff served us.
Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve was amazing with free champagne all night and an extra special buffet meal. We were spoilt for choice.
Also there was good entertainment and a disco New Year's Eve.
The only negative thing I could say is that there was a stale smell of I think beer in the lunch restaurant which after a week became a bit if a bug bear.
All said and done I would definelty return to this hotel which is on a great beach.
A big thank you to all the staff that made our stay extra special and thanks to the chef for my gluten free toast.

Went for a 9 day honeymoon. Spent hours trying to find the best location and were ready to spend a little more than usual. Been to Riu's in puerto Vallarta and loved those resorts. However for the cost of this Riu definitely not worth the extra money. The front desk staff didn't care that it was our honeymoon and put us in a room beside the lobby. Also the shower and toilet are facing each other with no separation. After 2 days got a different room (after being lied to by one front desk clerk who stated he booked us another room it was not done). Anyway there was 1 nice clerk name Jonathan. The rest didn't care for the guests too much. Other than that. The bar staff is amazing. Especially Filiberto and J.Cruz. Awesome people. And the beach is gorgeous although it is hard to get a chair on the beach between 9am - 11:30am. This resort also is the only beach for the Riu tequila guests. Anyway I would say 4 star at best and would not return here unfortunately for the price they charge.
