went to this hotel the beginning of september. it is a lovely hotel generally food very good. beach lovely but our chance to try the activities in the sea was spoilt by the weather but nothing can be done about that. our problem was that we locked our patio door and safe but returned to our room to find both unlocked and our money and property taken from the safe. I dont feel the hotel supported us very well at all sending us to the police station alone when we were told they should have sent someone with us to interperet for us. We am still waiting for the hotel to update us. we went to Cuba last year and much prefer their. if you choose Mexico and this hotel be very careful with your money and belongings.

Got back from Mexico on Saturday, Monday blues are on a high!!!
Im 21 and went away with my boyfriend 24

Went to the Riu Yucatan not knowing what to expect from the reviews the hotel has had.
Rooms - The rooms were big, spacious and they were cleaned to a very high standard everyday. down side was the beds were 2 double beds and they were not locked together so a bit of a nightmare being a couple and wanting to sleep in the middle of the bed.
Food - Amazing food such a variety to choose from, the food never got boring. Down side was the steak house was crap. other than that the food was the best all inclusive I have had before.
Drinks - So much to choose from, Pinocalada being the best. They had loads of shots the bar people will make you what ever you wanted. Smirnoff was available but you had to ask for it, no extra charge.
Pool - didn't spend time at the pools but from what I saw, the main pool was massive and very lively throughout the day and lots of activities going on. The chilled out pool was exactly what it is.
Beach - BEAUTIFUL white sand turquoise clear sea ( when its not raining)
Weather - we was very unlucky, the weather was crap and it rained loads. Personally I would not take the risk paying all that money and the weather to not be perfect. Knew full well it was hurricane season but did not expect non stop rain most days out of 14.
Excursions - We done all of our excursions with Thompson and I would highly advise to take a bit of extra time to go into playa del Carmen to look at the prices they have to offer. We found the people on the beach and also in playa del Carmen were ALOT cheaper than what Thompson offered us.
Jet skies- we paid 750 peco as a double for 30 minutes.
Massages - In playa del Carmen are roughly 230 peco depending on what type of massage you chose.
Staff - so friendly and couldn't fault anyone.
Mosquitos - NIGHTMARE, nothing stops them from biting you but if you do think you have some in your room then all you have to do is call reception and they will get someone to come and spray the room while you are out.

I would definitely highly recommend this hotel to anyone thinking of booking a holiday there.
Considering booking for 2014 been advised by a lot of people that worked there and on the beach that the best time to visit is either around March and also around June, July and early August.

Advise - give there hurricane season a miss (September)

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED HOLIDAY/ HOTEL!!!!

Room Tip: We was in room 4203 which was a good location on the complex

We booked our stay before the hotel closed for its renovations and after reading the reviews we did try to change hotels due to the negative reviews but we were unable too, so went expecting the worst but it was absolutely fine.

To be honest if you slipped and hit your head on the marble floor and got amnesia then you would have trouble finding clues on where you were, as there was nothing Mexican about the hotel but the renovations were well done, although my husband would have preferred an air conditioned lobby.

We had no problems finding a sun bed either on the beach or at either of the pools and we are not early risers!

The food was fab, the best we have ever had in an all inclusive hotel, we only used the main buffet restaurant and the Italian, never felt the need to try the others, which normally in an all inclusive we are bored with the food after a week! The only slight issue is there was not enough staff in the restaurants, the waiters and waitresses worked so hard and were always lovely but just couldn't keep up with the constant stream of service and table clearing and it got a bit monotonous trying to find a clean table every day.

Must give a mention to Nancy, who worked in the lobby bar, who made the best coffees!

The rooms were very comfortable and kept very clean.

The evening entertainment, despite previous reviews, we found to be better then most we have seen in other hotels, the Three Tenors and the Michael Jackson show were particularly good we thought!

Just a tip the 90 minute free wi-fi is per device, so if you have a number of devices you can use them all during the day!

Overall a really good holiday, yes it did rain but it was rainy season!

I really enjoyed my stay in this hotel. It's a large resort with a beautiful garden giving a "jungle atmosphere". Little wild animals wondering around when u walk around the paths. The hotel beach is wonderful, enough space, u don't feel the crowd..however i wouldn't say the same about the pool. The sea is clear blue, warm..wonderful. A few activities to do all day, with a friendly staff. We had a massage (a little too expensive, you could get cheaper ones in town), we scubadived..a wonderful thing to try
Lots of bars, didn't have to wait too long. The food was good for an all inclusive, with a lot of diversity. A little disappointed for the 90min free wifi authorized per day..sometimes it bugs, but i guess we should try and disconnect since we are on holiday :-)
The rooms were average to me..too much humidity, no door to separate the room from the bathroom..thank god the toilets were separated...however they were clean and cleaned everyday with a little surprise on our bed.
The staff is really friendly generally speaking...
The hotel isn't far from the center and the main shopping street. Around 7 to 9 usdollars by taxi. ALways ask the price first.
Loved the place, would go back anytime

Room Tip: maybe a room that's not too close to the night activities..the music is a bit loud until midnigh...

Came here with my husband and nine month old son, we were hoping to book into the Iberostar next door but it was fully booked so we ended up here. Straight away we were unimpressed as our balcony faced the back of the pool restaurant. We asked to move rooms but they said they were fully booked. We were at least nice & close to the pool area and they did give us a ground floor room as we had requested.

We didnt like the open plan bathroom area in the room, very hard to quietly get ready for bed etc with a sleeping baby in the room and no door or curtain to block the lights from the bathroom.

The buffet restaurant was a bit of a nightmare, it was always so busy and all the food stations are in a narrow walkway along the top so it could take ages just to walk from one end to the other to get some toast. Also the tables & chairs were very crammed in and most times we found it hard to find somewhere to sit with our little one in his buggy or highchair with the staff telling us we couldn't sit with him at certain tables as the buggy/highchair would block the walkway yet not offering us any alternative seating. Very annoying considering they only ever had two thirds of the seating area open! The actual food was just ok, nothing special but we always found something acceptable. They seemed to use very cheap ingredients all the time, one night at the pasta station they had prawns but after that never again. The chicken on offer was always chicken wings or tiny dry pieces of southern fried chicken. Any other fish or meat on offer was always shredded or in tiny pieces, never a nice size chicken breast decent piece of steak. I also didnt like the fact that things like butter, yoghurt, jam, peanut butter etc were all in large open bowls that you would take a spoon from rather than having your own sealed pack.

We tried all the a la carte restaurants, the Mexican and Steak were very good, the Japanese was not. They were easy to book though and had no limit on how many times during your holiday you could visit, which is quite unusual.

The swimming pool was nice and big but absolutely freezing while we were there. There were a few rainy days and there is really nothing to do when the weather is not good. The main bar/reception area is very small and when its raining that is the only place to go unless you want to sit in your room but there is nowhere near enough space or seating.

When the weather was good we did enjoy some of the activities that were on during the day, my husband did shooting and volleyball most days and I did aqua aerobics. The entertainment staff who run these were all very friendly.

Entertainment was the same thing every night. Clips of musical films then dancers trying to re-create them on stage. We did go to the other two Riu hotels in Playacar that you get access to and we thought the pool area at the Yucatan was the best, although the evening entertainment at the Tequila seemed slightly better, they were doing there own version of "Grease" the night we were there.

One last thing that bothered us was that, having been eaten by mosquitos the entire holiday, spending money on different repellents and those citrus bracelet things, having to spray our room every night to try to prevent them biting our baby while he was sleeping, as we were leaving on the last day we saw hotel staff going into the room next to ours with some kind of big spraying tank to spray for mosquitos. We were not aware at all this service was available, surely they should mention this somewhere.

So nothing terrible, but nothing great. Definately wont be back. I would recommend you book the Iberostar next door.

It has just been renovated, very very clean, food brilliant. We ate in all restaurants and enjoyed them all, although the main buffet is by far the best. The beach is very clean and well organised with beds. The pool was nice and ad no problem getting beds. Our room was nice and was given a nice big cot for our child. The downside...... The renovation has taken he culture out of the hotel, there is no real feel of being in Mexico, sharp edges, too contemporary, everything is either pink or white! We had a two year old child with us and was let down by the tiny area for kids (Riu Land) children's entertainment started at 8 which was very late for all kids. The hotel is in a brilliant location 5 minute walk to Playacar Plaza and 30 minutes into Playa Del Carmen. If your a couple without children you'll have a blast it will be perfect. If your travelling with children look at the Riu Playacar, we went for walks there only 10 minutes fro Riu Yucatan.

We travelled as 2 young couples (ages 19-23) on our first visit to Mexico and stayed for one week at the Riu Yucatan.
When we arrived at the airport we were quickly offered help with our bags from local workers who do not work for the airline companies themselves but seem to know everyone and we were quickly taken to a Thomson rep, then straight to the correct transfer bus. As with the high percentage of people you meet in Mexico, if they are providing a service they usually expect a tip. Some may find this annoying but personally with the efficient, friendly service they provide. we were more than happy to comply.
With a transfer of just over an hour to the hotel, we received valuable information from our Thomson rep about the hotel, the local area and the people of Playa Del Carmen. When we arrived at the hotel, check in was fast an efficient as they carried this out as a group. The hotel has an impressive appearance with the lobby a bright shade of pink and the main bar standing out, looking very inviting. We then left our cases and went to check out our rooms and explore the hotel, whilst the bell boy organised the delivery of our luggage.

We were in block 8, which is furthest from the beach, however it was close to the reception and it was away from the noisy pool area and also not surrounded by jungle, which we preferred. The rooms are spotless. They have been refurbished well, however there are some small issues and areas that have been missed. The hairdryer is pathetic and the shower basin has not been renewed so was slightly marked. The beds seem hard at first, but trust me I slept like a baby every single night! Overall the rooms are not 5 star standard but they are comfortable and the mini-bar and drinks dispersers were stocked up every day as required.

The hotel itself has been refurbished well, getting rid of the old style Mexican look, and redecorating with a fresh, modern appearance. The restaurants are all beautifully designed, each adopting a different theme. The grounds are also wonderful, as the walk from the main hotel to the pools and beach, is on a short walk through some jungle/trees. I would say here watch for wildlife!! There are 2 main cute raccoon and guinea pig like creatures, who will walk around and ignore you, but if you take the time to look above into the canopy you might be lucky like we were to spot the monkeys! We saw 3 adults and a baby on the last day and it just topped off the holiday.

The pools are great! The swim up bar is good shelter from the wind, with the usual selection of drinks and I would like to point out perfectly clean! The 2 main pools are also lovely the shallower one is warmer but the deeper one is good for splashing about. The Ibiza pool (near reception), is great for swimming lengths and just some peace and quiet, as it has its own bar, relaxing music and away from the high winds off the beach. I would say though the jacuzzi is a bit grotty, and hardly ever on so we avoided it. Getting beds around the pools varied; some days it was easy, others we waited till later in the day for them to free up but we eventually had them everyday and they are easy to find at the Ibiza pool.
The beach is beautiful! It's clean, and the sea is warm. We would occasionally venture down for a swim but the high winds at the time of visiting meant the sea was very rough.

Now the food!! The food is definitely 5 star! With a great selection at every meal for even the fussiest of eaters like myself, and there was definitely no shortage in the buffet restaurants. You can eat round the clock too, with there being snacks and lunch by the pool most of the day. As it was our anniversary when we were away we also tried the Steakhouse, and the food was delicious. I would recommend if you want to eat here, be first in the queue! My boyfriend went to the lobby to book at 7am and as he was first there it meant we were seated at the very front of the restaurant with a view straight onto the beach. It was a stunning setting, and I would also recommend going for the earliest sitting as then you can look out as the sun is going down. The bars are all very similar, with a good selection of drinks and cocktails, however if you want premium spirits ask for them and expect them to be strong!

I have only the highest admiration for the staff, as they work constantly and tirelessly and always have a smile on their faces! We has a slight issue with a blocked toilet on the first day, but with a quick call to reception the handy man appeared within 5 mins, fixed the toilet, cleaned the floor and provided new towels. The entertainment staff are also great! They appear to have been criticised throughout these reviews, but if you are up for a laugh and want to have fun then that is exactly what they do! They provide different activities through the day around the pools and on the beach and the aqua-gym was very popular. The also provided entertainment for the kids. The night time shows do vary in length but we saw one every night, and again I can only admire them for the effort they put in! Its not Broadway standard but the staff are very talented and it IS entertaining! Grease, the Mexican show and the fire show were all highlights.

I would recommend that you do go on some of the excursions. We went to Chichen Itza (booking through Thomson) and it was just spectacular, even with the 5am start. The temples and the history are wonderful, and the tour guide we had, Luis (Luigi) was fantastic! We did however have a slight issue coming home as the bus we were travelling on broke down in the jungle with a 3 hour wait for another bus. We were well looked after though and the bus driver was very apologetic although it was not his fault. The other excursion we went on was to Coco Bongo in Playa Del Carmen. I cannot recommend this enough!! We originally wanted to book through Thomson but they were fully booked before we even got there, which we were not aware of, so we booked with the Coco Bongo reps in the hotel. I will say though, go GOLD MEMBER VIP, not just VIP. There is a slight difference in price, but a massive difference when you get to the club. As a Gold Member you use a different entrance, have your own table unlimited drinks, waiter service (fantastic), a much better view of the show and they really make you feel like a VIP. A wide range of ages were there, but I would say it is very loud as it is technically a nightclub and there is some audience participation. The show carries on throughout the night, and It was just the most unforgettable, incredible experience!

Lastly I would say to people complaining about the weather, go in September and it will rain! If you have researched the holiday well enough, you will know when rainy/hurricane season is and therefore there will be thunderstorms, strong winds and the chance of rain on a daily basis. We had rain on some level every day but it did not put a dampener on our holiday. Make the most of the sun, make the most of the excursions and make the most of the entertainment provided by the hotel and you will have a good time!

Overall I would recommend this holiday to anyone, any age and any nationality! They cater for everyone to the best of their ability and they provide a high standard of service. All I can say is I wish I had stayed another week!!
