Three of my girlfriends and I booked an all-inclusive stay at the Riu Yucatan through CheapCaribbean.com. We were looking for a relaxing vacation, and that's exactly what we got! We spent most of our time at the beach, which was beautiful and clean, and we never had a problem finding chairs throughout the day. We also took advantage of the swim-up bars in the nearby pool area. However, if you are looking for a little more adventure, there are also representatives from different tour companies in the lobby, as well as people on the beach, offering a variety of activities (snorkeling, swimming with dolphins, etc.).

The resort has two buffets and three restaurants that require reservations for dinner, Shanghai (an Asian buffet), a steakhouse and a Mexican option. Overall, the food was fine, but it had a mass-produced, industrial quality, even at the restaurants (choose the steakhouse or the Mexican place over Shanghai). I was also a little disappointed with the drink selection: the only beer available was Dos Equis, and the cocktails tasted artificial. Breakfast was the best meal of the day, with fresh tropical fruit juices and handmade doughnuts.

Overall, we had a great, relaxing experience at the Riu Yucatan. The rooms were clean and came with fully-stocked fridges and liquor dispensers. All of the staff members were friendly and spoke English very well. That said, you may have to go to a different resort (you can walk or take a shuttle to the surrounding Riu properties) or into the towns of Playa del Carmen or Cancun for other activities like shopping, clubbing, etc. Just don't forget the sunscreen!

We went on comp because the AC in Jamaica broke down for a few days so they comped us and we went here. Hotel needs renovations and I understand from the cab driver it is closed this month for just that. Nice walk to stores. Tried to see the Rui palace next door, wouldn't let us in...food awful, but lots of it. Pool shabby. People were friendly and easy to get a chair. No one walking around pool or beach taking drink orders. All in all it was a decent place!
No ocean room views!

Room Tip: No ocean view rooms.

Visited this hotel in Jan 2013 and as this our second visit my partner and I knew this hotel staff could not fault them, they were very helpful and friendly nothing was too much trouble. Rooms could do with a bit of TLC. But we believe they are doing this during April until June/July. They need to do something with the reception area due to people smoking every where but the restaurant .

From arrival to leaving the staff could not have been more friendly, helpful or more attentive. The rooms were spacious, very large comfortable bed. The restaurants had a fabulous selection of any meal you could of wanted and again the staff were first class, apart from the main restaurant you choose to eat in the Asian,Mexican or Steak House on any night by simply booking a table on the morning. The beech restaurant provided first class with a good selection. The all inclusive was as it says well stocked bars a mini fridge in the the room along with litre bottles on optic of spirits. The sandy beech attached to the hotel had ample sun beds as did the spacious pools.Overall this hotel could not do any more to make this a most enjoyable holiday.

Room Tip: The rooms near to the main reception are away from the entertainment theatre and tend to be less noi...

We just returned from the Riu Yucatan. Wow! I can't say one bad thing about it. Our experience was great. Staff couldn't have been nicer, food was varied, plentiful and great, pools and beach were clean and safe, entertainment was offered day and night, our rooms were spotless, well stocked and nice and cool. The common areas and out side grounds were very clean, well lit and full of the local animals and birds. It is a tropical paradise and we will be returning.

Room Tip: building 9, second floor overlooking trees... very private and quiet

This was our first holiday in Mexico, we had previously had a few holidays in Cuba and thought we would try somewhere different.

All the staff were great, very helpful and spoke good English, the room was fine, perfectly cleaned every day, no complaints at all.
The food was typical of most all inclusive resorts, the main buffet was best in terms of choice and quality, the Shanghai restaurant was a little disappointing as it just turned out to be another self service buffet. the beach was nice and clean but a little short of sun shades, the only shade being a few palm trees which only provide partial shade, the pool area was good.
One really good advantage of this resort is the ability to use the facilities at other hotels in the group, the Riu Tequila and the Riu Playacar, we used the pool at the Riu Playacar for a few days as it nice and quiet there.

Just as a comparison with similar resorts in Cuba, the only obvious difference was the drinks, in Mexico you get named brand drinks & mixers and better quality fruit juice.
one very good thing was the tipping culture here in Mexico, tips were gratefully received but not expected unlike in Cuba that has a "in your face" tip for everything attitude.

I'm not sure how useful this review will be as the hotel was about to close as we were leaving, it's due for a full refurbishment which means things may change.

My wife and I have returned to this resort for the last 12 years. The place has changed a little by adding more swimming area and the addition of two theater bars, probably 7 years ago. They are preparing to do a 3 month remodeling that will include another pool, rearrangement of the lobby and buffet, and sprucing up the rooms a bit. The beach was perfect 12 years ago, then it was gone for a couple of years, now it's back to almost perfect. We really like the facilities, but the big draw for us are the workers who we have made friends with over the years-Israel, Juverly, Benito, Eduardo, Roger, Beatrice, Naomi, etc.
We had a problem with our travel agency this past visit and two girls at the front desk (Carolina and Nadia) spent hours on the phone, trying to remedy the problem. It was not their job to do so, but its just the quality of people that Riu hires. We have never had anything missing from our room, even though at times we have left money on the dresser. The maids will not take tip money unless it is left on a pillow. We tip 2 or 3 dollars a day, plus whatever small Mexican coins we have.
There were plenty of beach chairs, and they have started to bring chairs to wherever you want to sit. Always before, we had to go find and drag our own. The chair hogs still selfishly put there towels around the pool chairs, then wander out around noon to use them for a few hours.

Room Tip: The lower floor is noisier, less private, and more likely to have mosquitoes than the higher floors...
