“Just a Fantastic time Plain and Simple”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

So just back from the Riu Yucatan after a 7 day with my wife and 3 College aged kids. We stayed in Building 5 on the third floor and were close to everything. No noise issues although we were out and about until midnight all nights but had no trouble sleeping.

I read all reviews before choosing the Yucatan and most of them were accurate both good and bad. My perspective is simple. I have worked for years in the Hotel industry and subsequently have travelled the world for technology companies and have cruised and resorted many times.
There is no secret in this business. The property is a little old ( facelift coming) but absolutely a great facility. The lobby always had activity going on.....the lobby bar was fun.... the dining areas were clean and always found places to eat. The pool was oustanding....outside bars always rocking.....one of the nicest theatres we've experienced........beach was beautiful, clean, and never a problem getting a chair ( and we always needed 5 ). The entertainment team were oustanding as was their choice of programs.
Food was fine with plenty of choice......folks let me assure you that when you are cooking for 1200 plus people there is no magic....it is going to be ok not gourmet. All clean...and most had some flavour.
What set this trip apart for us was that every employee of this resort made us feel like family.....now it did help that we happen to be a welcoming group who smile first but everyone went out of their way to be nice to us.
Go down with a good attitude and realistic expectations and you will have an amazing trip

Having never been to Mexico before and having read negative reports on TA for both the hotel and the Thomson flight, and as we had to pay £15 per person per way to book our seats we were not happy, also the fact that the seating was 2-3-2, (not happy about a random sat next to us on the 3), so I was expecting the worst, well, well, well how wrong could one be. We have never been on a long haul flight & had to pay for all drinks, we were contemplating upgrading but it was only available outward at an extra cost of £100 pp (we had already paid £30 pp) I'm so glad we didn't, as the total cost of drinks for 4 people didn't amount to £400. The food, attendants & flight were good in both directions.

On our arrival at the hotel we went to our rooms, they were clean, but they smelt foisty & when we opened to patio door the kitchen smell came in. We went to reception & asked to be moved, how very accomodating the staff were. We were to look at 2 new rooms the next day, but decided to stay where we were as the location was quiet but central. Although the rooms were clean, (even under the bed) I still feel the refurb is much needed throughout the whole hotel.

The main buffet food is great, the drinks are very good, but tip the waiters & you get a nicer drink. There are also a large selection of cocktails, which are all very nice, we went down the list and tried them all. The entertainment team try hard to get people involved in daily activities, you can or can't, there is no pressure.

I would recommend the 'bar crawl' in Cancun organised by Thomson's, ending up at Coco Bongo's, all drinks & shots are included in the price, what a fab night, Jack the rep, and the staff that accompanied us got everyone involved, after all it was a ' Bar Crawl'. Coco Bongo's is a must, never seen anything like it.

We asked at reception for a laundry bag, and by the time we had walked back to our room, it was there, fantastic service.

The steak resturant is great, although we felt a little rushed, and i would suggest that they change the food every 2 weeks, as it was exactly the same ad the first week.

The Asian was rubbish, the service was bad & the food was over cooked and cold.

The Mexican, not really much better than the Asian, though the service couldn't be faulted.
What we liked, which we never have had before was the fact that we could go to the other Riu hotels (not the Palaces) for either breakfast or lunch and use their facilities, see the shows and use their pools & bars in the AI package, but you had to have evening meal in your own hotel.

The beach was very clean and no problem with sunbeds, you tipped the little man a couple if coins & he would get you sunbeds, and it was only a 35/40 min stroll to Playa Del Carmen.

All in all we are extremely pleased with the holiday. The staff cannot do enough for you, after the refurb it will be even better. Well worth the money and will defo be back.

Went here for New Year and had a brilliant time. The beach is fantastic. Hotel nice & clean despite some comments very well kept. Food in main restaurant brilliant. Not very impressed with speciality restaurants but as I said buffet restaurant is superb. Staff extremely helpful & friendly especially Israel the bar manager and his crew.

Room Tip: Rooms on the East side are quieter and not far to walk to both beach & bars

My boyfriend and I went to the Riu Yucatan from Jan 26- Feb 2 for a 7 day trip! I am 22 (registered nurse), he is 24 (police officer), both working professionals who needed a good relaxing vacation with a little bit of adventure. We flew with sunwing vacations (through signature) and although our flight was cancelled on the way home back to Vancouver (as were 3 other flights), it in no way ruined our vacation.

In fact, I had previously been to the Riu Yucatan back in 2004 on a family vacation (only 14 years old), and while booking I remembered how great it was and ended up making the best decision ever and returning this year with my boyfriend!

It was an amazing trip I will say.

Grounds:
Many people are commenting on how everything is aged? Really? I did not find this AT ALLLL. I thought everything was clean and immaculate. Now this hotel is not "hotel-ish" per say, IE- you arent going to find your marble floors and white walls everywhere. It is a mexican-jungle-tropical themed hotel. Right up our alley as we did not want to go somewhere that would be snooze-ville, or somewhere that was like a Vancouver hotel. We wanted to feel like we were in mexico, and we really did. The walk ways wind through jungle, there is all sorts of wild life on the hotel grounds. Always people cleaning, and I mean ALLLL the time... But in no way did i feel the hotel was out dated. In fact I think it is almost NICER than the last time I went many many years ago.

Rooms:
We were in Block 8, which is one up by the main lobby. We were nearest to the walkway on the bottom floor. We were uncertain of this... HOWEVER, it turned out to be the quietest block. THANK GOD we were not anywhere near the pool or the entertainment center as they were loud loud loud until at least midnight if not later... plus those are high traffic areas for people walking so it wouldnt ever be very quiet. Our room was very nice, always clean, always had fresh towels. Mini bar gets restocked every 2 days, HUGE water bottles in there for drinking. We asked for an extra blanket which they brought us promptly and we brought to the beach one night with a cup of coffee.
We had one night where a group of teens were being very loud and obnoxious all night, from about 1230 at night until 530 am.. slamming doors constantly, yelling "WOOOOOO!!!!" all night long and parading up and down the corridors. Im pretty sure security was there all night. It did not stop that night. However, we asked reception the next morning if they recieved any complaints and they said yes and that the individuals were pulled into security that day and asked to pipe down or leave. Im not sure if they left but we didnt hear a peep from them the following nights.. just that one :)

PS- the one bar is open until like 6 am.. so they could have gone there to party all night...

Beach:
The beach was a short 5 minute walk from our room. I think we hit a lull period because the hotel did not seem very full, which was fantastic. We got up early at 7 each morning and did not get to the beach until around 9, there were always beach chairs, and even ones at the pool as well. Even mid day we did not have an issue finding somewhere to relax. We did leave our beach towels (which you get towel cards for- can exchange for a new/dry/clean one as many times as you want in a day), at the chairs and our belongings, everyone was very respectful of your stuff and we never had an issue. The beach i must say is AMAZING. The water is so clear and wonderful... we visited a resort farther up closer to cancun (when our flight was cancelled and we stayed at another resort for the night...) and that beach was nowhere NEAR what the playa del carmen beach that the Yucatan has. White sand that goes on forever.

The Food:
We are not picky eaters, but i will say that even if you are a picky eater this is the biggest buffet i have ever seen plus 3 a la cartes you can reserve for, You WILL find something. Breakfast was always amazing which you eat at the main buffet. Tons of food from pancakes/waffles, eggs (anyway you want), fresh fruit smoothies, fresh fruit... literally anything you can think of they probably had. Lunch and Dinner was also served there with a different theme each night. The nights we ate there they had the best Roast Beef, they had salmon... mexican foods etc etc. I literally cannot list off the huge assortment of food.

A La Cartes:
There are 3 at this hotel. The steak house (we went twice.. so good), the asian (also very good), and mexican (we never went because we had a mexican meal in cozumel when we took the ferry over). You book for these from 7-1030 at breakfast. We never had any issues booking. They had two seatingings for each, 645 and 845 at night.

Bars:
There were 2 pool bars, 2 bars by the entertainment center, and one up in the main lobby. Our favorite was by the pool at the entertainment center. Eduardo got us pretty drunk one night with tequilla boom booms. We also brought clear starbucks cups (for frappacinos) and got our drinks put in there because we did not want to bring tiny plastic cups to the beach.

Entertainment:
I will say the Mayan Show was fantastic, make sure you see it. The rest of the shows we saw the circus, and the micheal jackson one.. a little cheesy but hey youre in mexico! The entertainment staff worked hard and you can tell they liked their job.

Staff:
Staff worked hard, everyone was friendly :) Great service!!1

We went on a couple excursions:
We did the Jungle Maya Adventure.. which included zip lining, snorkling and swimming in a cenote, rapelling into a cenote, lunch at a mayan village, a unimog ride through the jungle, and then down to tulum to see the ruins. Great trip it was all day and well worth the price! It was through Altournative... i would reccommend!

My boyfriend went on a half day fishing exursion.. he was gone from 6am until about 3 in the afternoon,... he LOVED it.. great day for him!

We took a 6 $ taxi to playa del carmen (5th ave)... did some shopping, took the ferry over to Cozumel, rented a scooter (20 $) and went around the island all day and stopped at San Gervasio ruins. It costed 5 bucks to fill the scooter in total. Great day!!!

Overall:

What a fantastic trip! It was really great and I am so happy we chose riu yucatan... for me it was great to return there, and for my boyfriend and his first time to mexico it was a great experience to go. We are looking forward to checking out other Riu's around the world!

Room Tip: Block 8 was very quiet!

The hotel is in a beautiful garden setting with abundant wildlife, monkeys in the trees & lots of birds. The beach is amazing lovely turquoise blue sea and white sand. Now the nasty bits. We did wonder at first why there was hand gel at the entrance to all restaurants, all would become clear. I was violently ill sickness & the other with the most awful cramps for 3 to 4 days as was my son. When my husband reported this to the Thomson rep Lynsey she was offhand to the point of being rude. Eventually her co rep, Miguel admitted there was a bug saying it was only a little virus that should go within 3 days. He also gave us a lits of medication we could putchase from the drugs store. At no time was Lynsey concerned for our well being and said that we were the only one that had reported this. When talking to others in the hotel it was clear that others had been ill with the same symptoms. No mention was made of this at the welcome meeting, in fact Lynsey's main interest was trying to sell the usual trips. She gave us no basic information about the hotel and we gained more info from the hotel reception who were all very helpful. This would have been a lovely holiday that was ruined by a sickness virus so beware, it last a lot longer than 3 days, I'm still suffering now after 2 weeks. If you do run into any problems go to reception as Lynsey is a waste of time.

My husband and stayed for 1 week and had a great time. We were in building 7 - very quite with no noisy at night.

The food was very good. Buffet always was very fresh and had a great selection for all meals. We tried all the restaurants and liked them all. Aisan was our least favourite because it was like a chinese buffett but saying that it was not the hussle and bussle of the main buffet so very relaxing and the food was fine. Staff was very friendly at all restaurants and no need to tip unless you wanted too.

Beach is to die for - beautiful sand and ocean with no rocks or seagrass. We had a blast with the waves. Not too big but lots of fun. You can walk for miles either way. Lots of lounge chairs on the beach so no need to rush at 6:00 am to put towels on them. We only sat around the pool in the afternoon and by then there was loungers available if needed. The swim up pool bar by the beach got very full by the afternoon so we went to the quite swim up bar at the other pool and met a lot of very nice people.

Our room was very nice and clean. It would suit a couple more then a family with the way the shower is open. The bar fridge was always well stocked with large bottles of water ,pop and a couple cans of beer. Air conditioning worked very well. The patio door had a nice secure lock. The room safe was a bit old fashion with a key which was a pain to have to carry with you at all times.

The hotel lobby is a very dated with old couches and furniture. It is the main area that needs updating. We liked the Mexican feel but a new coat of paint and modern furniture and art work with a nice bar area would be wonderful. Saying this the lobby was spotless with the staff always cleaning.

There is no beach bar or bathrooms on the beach. Would be more convenient if they consider this when doing the renovations this spring. Not a deal breaker - we took bubba thermal mugs. They're great for keep drinks cold and great for the enviorment as well.

All in all we had a wonderful time and would go back again.

Room Tip: building 7 was quite and close to the lobby and buffet.
