Hotel Riviera Caribe Maya
Ranked #20 of 182 Playa del Carmen B&B and Inns
Reviewed April 2, 2014

Booked here for 8 nights in March of 2014 and definitely would use this hotel again.

Front Desk
-Always friendly and helpful. Zero complaints!

Room
All rooms overlook the pool. We had room 101 so closest to the lobby and ground level at the pool. I was concerned about noise but we heard nothing the entire time. It was even Spring Break but the location is a full block off of 5th Avenue so quiet but close enough to the action. Great location!

Shower/Water Pressure
We had hot water the entire time with plenty of water pressure.

Internet
This is the only con. They have Internet for the rooms and a separate connection in the lobby. The room service was so slow that I'm surprised it didn't disconnect altogether. Majority of the time you couldn't even load a basic webpage. The lobby Internet was better but not great.

Cleanliness
Super clean, zero complaints here. Housekeeping staff were great and friendly and for a small tip they went way above and beyond!

Pool
Small pool but does the trick. Has shade throughout the day and some sun so nice that way.

Surrounding area
As mentioned the hotel is a block from 5th Ave and about 3 blocks from the beach. Walking distance to everything including a Walmart. We never felt concerned about safety.

Room Tip: If you want to walk out of your room and either sit at your own little table, or, hop into the pool...

This is a good hotel. When I read about its award as a boutique hotel (etc, etc) I was expecting something that would wow me, but this place was still pretty good. The common areas are very pretty and there is a shady pool if you have crisped yourself and can no longer swim in the sun. The room was a decent size, with a nice king-size bed that was pretty firm but not unpleasantly so. One reviewer mentioned the flimsy doors; it's true, they are not reinforced steel, but I have a lot of experience travelling throughout Mexico and this place (Playa) did not strike me as one with rampant hotel crime problems. There is a small safe in the room, which was good enough for us, and I noticed that the person at the front desk was fairly vigilant. There's also a convenience store right across the street where you can buy water and juice and store it in the fridge, rather than paying minibar charges. The Spanish restaurant attached to the hotel did not appeal to us, but there is no shortage of good places to eat nearby and the front desk is very happy to make suggestions.

Regarding its location in town, it's a block off the main strip and all the noise and drunk people, which is great! The walk to beach is less than 10 minutes, depending how fast you walk, and although it puts you onto one of the most popular and busy beaches in town, the water quality here was actually the best. Farther to the south (around el Faro and even as far as Playacar) the water had an unpleasant yellow color. People told me it was algae, but algae blooms when it gets plenty of "nutrients" so we didn't swim in those areas. Playa Mamitas was packed with obnoxious spring-breakers, but had beautiful clear blue water and relatively little surf. If we had gotten there earlier in the day, we probably could have had more peace and quiet. You can of course stay much closer to the beach if you want to, but the price goes up markedly east of Fifth Avenue (Quinta Avenida) and you will likewise get the noise of beach parties/clubs, which don't stop at sundown.

If you are determined to go to Playacar, which locals insist is the best beach despite the aforementioned water quality concerns, it's about a 20-30 minute walk down 5th Ave, past the ferry to Cozumel and the bus station.

We were in Playa del Carmen over New Year's Eve 2013. We had visited this area in April of 2013 and looked at a few places we thought we would like to stay, however they were all booked by the time we got around to making plans. I reserved this hotel through Hotels.com and was extremely nervous about it being in the right location for us to be in on all of the fun of that area. What a pleasant surprise! We were a few blocks from everything! The beach was a short walk, and the restaurants were basically around the corner. The staff is delightful, especially one young woman that spent a lot of time helping us when a tour we booked never showed up to pick us up. She spent a lot of time making calls to ensure our plans were rearranged and confirmed. The beds were very hard and when I mentioned it, we were immediately given an egg crate foam pad which helped a lot. The entire place was immaculate and cleaned thoroughly throughout our stay of one week. The decor makes you feel that you are in a very authentic Mexican hotel. The pool water was very cold and we never got in, but the environment around the pool was very relaxing and welcoming. I would definitely stay here again because of the awesome customer service we received.

We had a change of plans and decided to stay in Playa Del Carmen. Went on line and found this gem. The hotel was well located, clean, comfortable, and priced right.

The only negative is that the pool never gets sun. But they are a short walk to the beach.

Tip of the day. Walk to the beach. When you get there you will be between Mamita Beach Club and Kool Beach Club. Walk straight ahead to the water then turn right. Just past Kool Beach Club are some permanent Palapa/Umbrellas. They rent chairs and the umbrellas. 2 chairs and an umbrella was $13 for the day. Great option. Bring your cooler and you are set up. A fraction of the cost of anywhere else.

Great find.

Room Tip: Don't worry about poolside.

Nice room with balcony overlooking the pool/garden.. very nice. They really mean check in at 3 so don't come early. Also get your beach towels early in the day, they didn't have any at 11am.. all gone apprently? Nice friendly staff, good housekeeping and prices were reasonable. Only a five minute walk to the action and the beach.. so great price for the location. Also they charge a dollar for using the safe which is bizarre and new to us? Rather insulting actually.

My husband and I stayed at the hotel for our first three nights in Mexico. The staff were friendly, the rooms were very clean and it was a very quite hotel. The location was what made it perfect.

There is a pool there, which no one really uses, probably because it is very cold, but that didn't bother me one bit and you can lay in the hammocks that are outside as well and the beach chairs,

My only complaint would be that there was no hot water in the shower, but other than that it was perfect.

There is an in room safe which costs $1 USD per day to use. Would chose this hotel again if staying in Playa Del Carmen.

The pros:
Cost
Location--a block from 5th Avenue, which I really appreciated, because it was convenient to stores and restaurants, but away from the noise. Had friends staying at a different hotel, who barely got any sleep.
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Hot water and pressure were consistent (at least until the last night I was there)
Big, comfortable bed
I was in a second floor room and got reliable wi-fi
Towel animals/people

The cons:
No removable shower head; bathroom in general could use a bit of freshening up, but everything was clean.
No breakfast
Common areas were not air-conditioned and in the open, so I pretty much fed the entire mosquito population

Misc:
Didn't use the AC, as I found the ceiling was cool enough for the nights during my stay
Dry your wet articles outside on the balcony. May be different with AC, but everything inside the room that was damp, stayed that way.
$1 per day safe charge, if you want to use it

I'd certainly stay here again. Really good budget hotel, excellent for the money you'll spend.
