“Do not go to Allegro Playacar”
Reviewed July 4, 2013

We ran into problems with this resort from the moment we checked in. To make a long story short: roaches, no hot water on multiple days, and the crown jewel was our room flooding during a torrential downpour due to the holes in the thatch roof. Our bed was soaked, the floor was 100% covered with water, and the only place we wouldn't get rained on in our room was the bathroom. Its not like it was a slow "drip-drip" into our room. The water was raining down on us very quickly in our room. Thankfully, we took videos and pictures of this incident to provide proof to the resort and to FunJet. After demanding to go home to the FunJet rep, Allegro, and arguing with FunJet on the phone, we were moved to a room with a roof for the night before our early check-out. Thankfully, Allegro was understanding and authorized a refund for the nights we had stayed. The challenge will be getting a refund for the rest of the nights through FunJet. However, when we were getting the keys to our new room, we heard the front desk tell a family checking in that they were going to be staying in our old room number. There was no way the mattress was dry yet. They probably just flipped it over to save time. The beach was lovely though. The bar is pretty good too.

Room Tip: Just don't go to this resort.

Dear Lacey L,

Please accept our most sincere apologies for the disappointing experience you had while staying with us. Our resort have thatched palapa roofs with the purpose of offering a Caribbean style atmosphere to our guests, it’s true that while heavy rains our rooms may suffer minor damages causing leaks in rooms. I assure you that our front desk and maintenance teams works together to repair these inconveniences as soon as our guest report it.

I will take this opportunity to inform you that our hotel is undergoing a roof replacement of the rooms, offering a new décor and update of sinks and bathtubs.

We hope that despite this experience you will give us the chance of welcome you back and enjoy our renovations,

Sincerely,

This holiday was for me something different. Not only because there was the sea and sand, what we do not have in my country, but also because of the environment and service we got there.
All staff were very kind, polite and helpful, always smiling to the guests. Service was very quick and fast. Room was daily cleaned - and those beautiful towel-origamis!!!
Entertainment staff were superb, always happy and active, and I also liked the activities.
We got exectly we wanted - nice and lovely, sunny and great relaxing holiday on the other end of the world. :)

Room Tip: Bungalows, with A/C, bath, double beds. I prefer the rooms on the ground floor.

Was not expecting a great stay based on some reviews I read. However, the price was very reasonable so I could not pass it up. Beautiful beach. Super friendly staff. Lunch and dinner buffet offered lots of variety and the quality of the food was good. Loved the great fresh-tasting fish. Did not make reservations (which are required) for the Italian or Mexican a la carte restaurants. Wish I had. Each building consists of 8 rooms. 4 on the first floor, 4 on the second floor. Roof is made of some type of grass or palm leaves. Some reviewers complained of leakage when it rained. We stayed on the second floor. It rained on two nights and we did not notice any drips. However, there was a musty smell after the rain caused by the roof material. Beds are firm which is good for your back. No complains there. Thin walls so you can hear conversations in the other rooms if they are loud. Luckily, had quiet neighbors. Overall really enjoyed my stay.

Beach - nice, soft, sandy beaches. Not rocky. Great for kids.

Service - been to Cancun 10 years and I have to say this is the worst service ever. Called front desk at 2 PM for new bed sheets because my daughter had an accident. Did not receive bed sheets until 10 PM after the 4th call to the front desk. They kept saying will be there in 10 minutes.
Asked concierge for help to call Cancun Shuttle to confirm our bus transportation to and from airport. They would say, "I don't know their number, sorry I can't help you."

Food - breakfast is great with made to order omelettes and fresh fruit drinks. Dinner is good. Lunch buffet is also mediocre. Same food and not much varieties.

Drinks - they were always short of cups for you to self-serve your own drinks. Alcoholic drinks was very bland.

Rooms - run down and old. Sheets are very thin and old. Mattress is very old and uncomfortable. Instead of upgrading mattresses, they use mattress foam.

Italian Restaurant - food not that good, but service was great.

Stayed 6/22~6/27 Hotel and staff were great! Beds were a little hard but managed to get a good nights sleep. The grounds are kept nice and clean. I loved the thatched roof! Waiter Jacobo was always working his butt of everyday!

Only problem was the bartenders by the pool were never consistent when making frozen/mixed drinks! Not enough liquor and they threw in to much ice when making frozen drinks. No taste at all!!

Overall, would love to stay again in the future just hope the hotel trains the bartenders to do a better job making drinks!

This was our second trip to Allegro Playacar; 9 outstanding days and a wonderful time! We have been to Cancun 8 times and we have been to a lot of resorts and for the money, Allegro Cancun is the best deal we have found. The important point is to compare resorts of equal cost...too often on Tripadvisor I see reviewers comparing a resort such as Allegro that is in the 400 dollar range with a resort that is in the 2000 dollar range! The Allegro is a smaller resort which has advantages such as the beach is far, far less crowded and the staff knows and cares more about you and you needs. This trip we had a problem with our reservations (our kids were not on the trip voucher) and Antonio at the front desk and Juliet at guest services were completely helpful in getting this resolved - this would have cost us extra for the kids if we didn't get this corrected and they let us use the internet for free to send email to skyauction to get everything resolved...for me this was very stressful and Juliet and Antonio did everything possible to help. At larger resorts I have never gotten this type of service.

The last trip to Allegro was two years ago and since this time, the resort has been upgrading and improving e place, rooms on the north of the property have better A/C, fresh paint, etc. The rooms are still small, but we don't spend much time in the room except to sleep, so for us this isn't a big deal.

The reason to come to Allegro is the drinks, the service and the beach...these are some the best we have experienced at any resort in Cancun. if you are looking big, fancy rooms you will need to look elsewhere (and to pay a lot more for it). For us, the price and vallue were outstanding...no regrets!

Some hints:
Mosquitos are out at night, bring bug repellent - these things will eat you alive. One of the bartenders suggested lime juice, and it works pretty good too.

If you have kids, the kids club is a great place to send them for a bit of time on your own

The pizza bar has amazing pizza, great for lunch

Room Tip: 5000 rooms are nearest to the beach

I spent from May 25th thru June 1st at the Allegro Playacar with some fun people (my second trip to the resort). Although the resort is clean it is just a little tired and in need of some sprucing. The area, the beach, the First Club, Santiago and Ariel made up for whatever it lacked. We were a group of 5 and from the first moment we met Santiago and Ariel both not only remembered each of our names but also treated us with so much respect and overall special treatment each time we saw them that it made our trip even more special.

Our only REAL negative of the resort is the food, especially at dinner. They need to prepare what they know best and that is MEXICAN !!!! When in Mexico I don't want Italian, Oriental or any other nationality of food. No even close to being enough Mexican!

A wonderful week despite any negative we may have had! A special Hola to Santiago from Jessie, Jamie, Tommy, Laura and Chris !!!
