Sandos Playacar Beach Resort
Ranked #61 of 212 Hotels in Playa del Carmen
Reviewed March 4, 2013

Just returned from staying at this resort for 6 nights. We are comparing this trip to the other 5 times we have went to Mexico and stayed at other resorts in the area. We stayed in the Hacienda family area. Well worth the upgrade! 10 rooms per unit and each unit has its own outdoor hot tub and small pool. We were on the ground floor so we had a sliding glass door and a patio/pool/hot tub shared with the other rooms. Plenty of room and very quite.
Pros-
Room clean, staff friendly(they work very hard!), coffee house(cupcake shop),healthy bar (fruit juices, etc.),excellent beach(no rocks- go down a ways and snorkel around the reef),okay night entertainment, activity area for the kids (foosball, ping pong, etc.)lots of activities to do during the day (spanish lessons, bingo, volleyball, sand castle competition, etc.). Room service - at all times - limited menu but hey it was included and if you didn't want to waddle down to a buffet you could order something light and enjoy it by the pool. Saw many people doing this with small kiddos.
Cons-
The food - we ate at the brazilian & mexican restaurants - very similar to what was on the buffets everyday. We got there on Tuesday and wasn't able to go to an al a carte restaurant until Friday. Not busy just doing double duty - brazilian / steakhouse was one in the same and was open opposite nights (maybe?). The resort wasn't full so that is what we were thinking - another family we befriended also thought the same. The food was average and our family always looks forward to the al a carte restaurants but it was the same food in the buffets. We didn't go hungery just looking for alittle more in the al a carte areas that we have experienced at other resorts.
All in all, we had a great time and enjoyed ourselves. I would go again. Oh, USA they have regular outlets in the room we stayed in. Not sure about the other rooms.

Room Tip: We recommend the family haciendas - away from the night entertainment but close enough to the beach...

I was 26 when I stayed at Sandos with my cousins and aunt for a post college spring break vacation (feb 2010) It was amazing. The pool/entertainment staff always had activities and games going on - tequila volleyball was my favorite! We wanted to be where the action was so we requested to have a room overlooking the main pool which is the louder side. You can always request the front of the resort, which is quieter if you prefer. We did the all inclusive which I feel is always worth it. The staff also organized group trips into town at night for all you can drink deals and free admission into clubs with VIP access - all for one low price. Transportation there included. I keep hearing how dangerous mexico is, but we never felt unsafe, even when cabbing into town alone at night. But maybe we were lucky in Playa. The hotel had shows every night in the theater and the food was very good. The buffets had theme nights which was almost the same food each time but just prepared a different way, but always good so it was fine with me. The restaurants were delicious as well. The FRESH salsa every day was to die for. Lots of topless sun bathers on the beach just an FYI. I have no idea how the quiet side of the resort was, but I found this to be more of a party and "young" resort so if you're looking for a quiet and romantic trip, this might not be what you're looking for. But still had an amazing time. We did a couple excursions through the resort which were fun as well. But I def needed a vacation after my vacation.

Second time at this hotel and the same happenned as the first time, we had requested a sea view room and was put initially into a ground floor room which to us smelled of dampness and only overlooked the beach umbrellas with only a very limited view of the sea. To be fair the reception re located us the following day to a room in the floor above which more than met with our expectations, we had to change the first time also. So if you like a sea view, I would suggest avoiding the ground floor rooms. The staff throughout our holiday were extreemly hard working in sometimes very challenging situations, for example, going for lunch at say 1pm ish was manic, we tended to leave it until after 2pm, the down side being that some of the more specialised fish dishes were finnished and didnt seem to be renewed after the main rush but generaly the food had a wide variety and you could get what you liked. Breakfasts were also very well stocked and very good quality. The specialised restaurants were good but for some you had to book several days in advance, not always convenient. The beach was fabulous and well maintained and the water was walk in lovely as far as temperature. Walk a bit further up the beach and there was some lovely small bays for snorkelling. We did a couple of trips to Cabo and snorkelling, all good value and enjoyable. The room maids were excellent always leaving a towel sculpture which made us smile. We visited the Spa and had a massage which we thoroughly enjoyed although a touch expensive, the gym was well equipped and comfortable. Drinks were a bit of an issue as much of what was put into the drinks/mixers came from dispensers which often bore no resemblence to what we are used to, I think that even the gin came from a dispenser. The wines at lunch time and in the buffet restaurants while plentiful was probably below average apparantly coming from bulk containers but delivered in bottles.

Room Tip: Sea views rooms are wonderful if you can avoid the ground floors.

We just returned from the most amazing resorts - Sandos at Playacar. There were 17 of us from KS, MN, and IA in our group....and it was 85 -90 every day. The beach and pools are amazing with the swim up bar being one of our favorites plus the meeting point lounge who had amazing bartenders! We got a free upgrade with our wedding package - and ended up staying in a hacienda which was more then we expected. We had a hot tub and a pool on our patio to share with 2 other rooms, but hardly ever saw anyone use it! The drinks, the fun in the sun, and the memories, will never be forgotten The wedding coordinator (Lupita & staff) were beyond amazing. They did things for us above and beyond what was expected.,..and made our beach wedding an unbelievable dream with a nice dinner and small reception following our big day! Special thanks to all the bartenders and the amazing staff, especially Lupita, who really deserve an A+. It was truly and amazing experience. Lanett & Daryl Siefers from Iowa! 2/09/13- 2/16/13

Room Tip: Always check into the upgrades and also, for a wedding, if you books so many rooms you get alot of l...

We booked Sandos Playacar one week before departure and arrived about 4.30 on Tuesday afternoon with another 5 couples from the flight from Manchester. After waiting for 30 minutes at Reception we were all told- one after another- that the hotel was full and the rooms that we had booked and confirmed would not be available until the following day. As you can imagine no one was happy and in particular the way the situation was dealt with by the lobby manager was far from satisfactory with no apology just a definite "no room tonight". 8 of us were transfered to the Sandos Caracol for the night whilst the other 2 couples -we were to find out later- did get rooms at the Playcar after some protracted negotiation. The following day we arrived back at the hotel at 12 noon and had another 3 hour wait before our room was ready.
In effect what should have been a 7 day holiday has turned out to be 6 days. In terms of compensation from Sandos everyone was upgraded to better rooms and given a gold band which gave access to the adult only section at the beach and pool and breakfast buffet restaurant. Our room was the same as we had booked- a junior suite - but was "upgraded" to the adult only section - so no real benefit. A complimentary spa treatment was also offered to those that wanted one.
Apparently this was a new experience for the reception staff having to deal with an overbooking problem and hopefully they will learn how to deal with the situation more positively in the future. The lack of communication between the hotel, the travel representative and the clients leaves a lot to be desired.
With all that said the hotel facilities are excellent. All the bar, restaurant and room staff are very helpful and offer a warm and friendly service. For the 6 days of our stay we had a great time and enjoyed the facilities on offer. The beach front is excellent although there appears to be no management of the sections available to guests with different writs band privileges.
The evening entertainment was interesting if not absorbing.
We would recommend the hotel and even though our initial experience was poor and unwelcoming we would return again - hopefully this was a one off experience!

Room Tip: In adult only section rooms facing the pool can be very noisy as wedding receptions are held there s...

We just returned from Sandos Playacar after spending 4 wonderful days in the sunny 87 degree weather. The resort was by far one of the best we have had the pleasure to stay at. We arrived earlier than the check in time but were shown a large restroom area in which we could change our clothing and our luggage was checked so the bellmen would have them transported directly to our rooms when available. Check-in was a bit slow and I noted several ways in which the front desk staff could utilize their time for a faster check-in. We were allowed towel cards and our guest bracelets while we waited for our rooms to be cleaned.

We stayed in the Adults Only section of the resort which is the newest and most up to date. The pool area was heavenly and not crowed in the least. The area was extremely clean and neat and all of the staff were friendly and attentive. The pool bar staffing is limited so on a busy day you will have to wait a while. After a day, they knew most of the guests and had cocktails waiting on them when they arrived by the pool.

Our room was a junior suite and was very clean upon arrival. The bathroom was the best part. The shower and toilet area are completely separate in the bathroom allowing for more privacy. There is also a large Jacuzzi tub for the guests to enjoy. The double sinks also allowed for more convenience. We never had a problem with linens and were supplied a fair amount of towels during our entire stay. The beds are very firm so be prepared. If you like a hard matress, you will get a great night's sleep.

The entire resort grounds were spectacular. The employees are constantly working and all were very friendly. We did hear complaints from some guests over the golf cart shuttle to the beach from the Adults Only section. There was only 1 shuttle available for the entire resort as we were told by the driver that the other carts were in the shop. The walk to the beach was only about 5-8 minutes and why anyone would complain about walking through the resort grounds in beyond me. We were able to see lizards, Coati, Cats, Donkeys and lush vegetation in such a short walk.

The family area of the resort had many activities for families to enjoy. Most of the restaurants are located in the family area along with the beach access. The beach was to die for! The white sand, the crystal blue water and the endless areas for you to walk were heavenly. The water was warm and the beach wasn't crowded at all.

Food wise, the Mexican restaurant was the most fun we had while dining on the grounds. Our server made our experience memorable. If you go, ask for the Tequila Boom Boom. We have never laughed so hard. The food at this restaurant was delicious. We were not able to get reservations to any of the other restaurants as they were all booked. We did try the Festival Grand Buffet one night and as most people will tell you, you don't go to All Inclusives for the food. The food was edible but nothing to write home about. Our last night we tried the Italian Buffet. The pasta and the pizza were both delicious. We ventured out into Playa Del Carmen one evening for a true dining experience which I recommend to everyone.

We truly enjoyed our stay and don't have a single complaint. I would definitely return.

Room Tip: They have numerous wedding receptions at the adult's only pool so if you have a pool view room...

Just spent 10 sunny days at this resort and loved evert minute of it, Were upgradeed to Adult Section with a chance to move to beach front but stayed put . Found the walk was pretty enjoyable and not as far as made out to be. the service was 1st class and all the bartendars were freat. Otoocha at the swim-up- bar made the afternoons very entertainment and was allways eager to help,Gustavo at the Select Lounge in the main lobby was always great, knew what youi wanted when you walked in and gave us a bottle of wine for our room at the end of the nite

The rooms were well cleaned and loved the towel animals each day. The beach was awesome and no problem finding a chair. One server on the beach but no problem getting up to get a drink

There was all types of food available, something for every one. We had 4 reservations but skipped out on 2 of them for the buffet in which I enjoyed the seafood offered. The Mexican resturant was entertaning.

Would diffitenly return and will next year//////////lori and armindo
