“A beautiful hotel with amazing food”
Reviewed May 9, 2014

One of the biggest selling points of this hotel is the food. The 6 restaurants offer fantastic variety to suit every taste and the food is great quality - refreshing for a 'resort' hotel! We particularly liked Las Ventanas which serves really creative dishes.

The hotel feels very friendly - the staff were attentive and fantastic and because the rooms are split up into 'villas' it doesn't feel too big. There is also the advantage of 3 smaller pools located away from the main pool where you can have a quieter swim.

This resort doesn't have the loud music and drinking games of some of its neighbours but its atmosphere suited us well as we were travelling as a couple. It would be perfect for honeymooners for this reason.

The location is good - a lovely beach - but if you are staying here with the hope of walking to Playa del Carmen (and/or the ferry crossing to Cozumel) then be aware it is a good 25 minute walk down a hotel lined road in the heat.

Room Tip: Opt for one of the villas in the centre of the hotel to avoid the noise of the neighbouring resorts...

We have recently returned from our daughters wedding that was held at the Royal Hideaway. Our experience was amazing. Karina, our wedding coordinator, was beyond exceptional. This experience was completely successful due to her and all the wonderful staff. Our guests loved the hotel and I know many of them will be back. This hotel is beautiful, friendly and relaxing.

We look forward to coming back soon.

Thank you Karina for all that you did. Royal Hideaway is lucky to have you!

Room Tip: Rooms on the inside of the hotel are a little quieter than those on the perimeter

We have just returned from spending 2 weeks at The Royal Hideaway and it was a great choice from the hundreds of hotels to choose from. Playacar is set away from the buzz of Playa del Carmen which is a good thing as you can choose to be among the action when you want to,and if not, just enjoy the tranquil surroundings and beach at the hotel. The rooms were large and kept spotlessly clean and all staff were friendly, courteous and a credit to the hotel.I especially want to mention Fanny at the Allegria bar who, as well as being very professional was a lovely person and very good at her job.The beach is soft white sand and the waiters came around very regularly to bring you drinks and food if required---they all worked extremely hard, but were always happy with sunny dispositions. The gardens and little swimming pools dotted around were meticulously looked after,as well as the main pools and the interior, and the restaurants were beautifully decorated. The food eaten in any of the six restaurants was excellent but our least favourite was Spices for the evening meal even though it served a very good buffet breakfast.I would recommend any age group as it was mixed and overall The Royal Hideaway is definitely a 5* hotel for those who want their holiday to be on the quieter side.

Room Tip: Some side villas do hear music from neighbouring hotels but we found that it did not go on too late.

I stayed at the Royal Hideaway alone from 13th to 17th April 2014 and had a near perfect stay. I had a few special requirements which were met by the lovely ladies at the hotel lobby, their names will come to me soon! Very helpful and pleasant staff.

The rooms are beautiful, the food great, the pool area lovely and the bar staff very nice and friendly. I will definitely recommend this hotel and will definitely stay here again if I come back to the area. I am quote fussy about where I stay and have stayed in many 5 star hotels globally and was very impressed with this one!
Please do not make the mistake of staying in the Occidental Grand XCaret as it is awful!!

Just returned from this resort-stayed from May 1-5. The grounds are beautiful, the food was great and the beach was beautiful!
I also agree that the night life was lacking. It is a very mellow atmosphere. Although I didn't mind that for a few day stay, I wouldn't want to be there longer without some night life. The other thing that is lacking is a bar just to sit around at to meet and talk to people. Even a swim up bar would have been nice so you could blend more with the crowd.
Overall , we loved our stay here and it was just what we needed after a long hard winter in New Jersey!!!

We spent Apr. 14-21 at this wonderful resort. The food was great, service couldn't be better, and the weather perfect. Thank you to Frida, our concierge in Bldg. 24,who was always so helpful; and to Christian and Carolina at Spices for their hospitality every morning at breakfast. Fanny, at the Allegria bar was always so welcoming and friendly. All the maids and servers were so courteous and professional.

While some people have remarked that the resort is quieter than those on either side, yes it is, but if you're looking for a relaxing holiday and not being forced into the usual rah rah rah mentality of the others, then this is for you. Someone did make mention that the average age is 70. It is not. There were all ages and we all got along very nicely.

It should be noted that there is only one buffet meal: breakfast at Spices. You can get lunch/snacks at the Grill overlooking the beach or at a couple of other restaurants. It can even be delivered to you on the beach. Dinners are all at the specialty restaurants. A very good suggestion is to reserve BEFORE you leave home. They will make reservations for a maximum of 3 dinners in advance. Once you're there, see your concierge and they will gladly make the rest of them for you. We did, however, have one dinner buffet on the beach. All the restaurants were closed that evening which forced everyone to dine together. It was a beautiful set-up and there was a fire-dancing group that entertained us while eating. After that, there was a reggae band and they got everyone up and dancing. This was a new experience for the hotel and it was a hit. Let's hope they keep up that tradition.

All in all, we were very pleased with the hotel/staff/food. We do plan to return.

Room Tip: We had read that there was noise coming from the hotels on either side but that only seemed to be du...

This was an all-inclusive beautiful resort. The food was delicious and there were different restaurants to choose from. However, this resort rolls up the sidewalks at 9:00 p.m. There were never any energetic dance parties or music by the beach or pool, unless it was from a private individual's speaker or the fitness lady's boombox. We begged her to let us have it for a while by the pool, and she did. For such a gorgeous resort and attentive and friendly staff, the entertainment was definitely lacking. On Mexican Circus night, while dining, the warm up act was a singer reading the words and a keyboard player. The acrobat act that took place afterward was very good, but the temperature in the resort venue was very warm.

We were jealous of the music we could hear at night from the neighboring RIU Playacar. Mind you, we are in our 50's but we're not ready to hang up the towels as some of the other visitors were. I wanted to shake them and say, "Get off your _____ and let's make some fun memories here!!!!" I just felt like the resort was catering to 60-70 year olds that want it quiet. In that case, there could have been a quiet pool area and a party area. New management is needed or some new policies. While we had a great time with the 2 other couples we were with, the resort disappointed where entertainment comes in. The few acts they had were a duo of guitar players that said it was complicated to play faster music people could dance to, a Latin group whose lights shown on us and all we could see were their silhouettes, and the reggae group was cancelled. Another act performed opera songs from Beauty and the Beast... There were never enough seats at the outdoor venue even if we wanted to attend. I understood from a return guest that the resort used to be a happening place, but some problems with rowdy people caused it to change. That's too bad, but I don't want to go back and have this laid back experience ruin my time again. We did go downtown for some excitement one night, but I don't want to have to do that if I don't want to leave the resort.

Room Tip: These are villas. I'd ask to be in the middle closer to the ocean.
