We were referred to Royal hideaway from Jim at Perfect Honeymoons and we could not be happier. The hotel is beautiful, the food is great and the staff is absolutely amazing. Leonardo at one the restaurants made us feel like we were the only ones there and Carlos at the pool was a real pleasure to be around. All of the staff was great but these two were our favorites. I have never been to a hotel with such friendly and helpful staff. There was almost nothing that they wouldn't do to make us feel special. It's as if they know how hard we work during the year and don't want us to think about a thing on vacation. We also met some wonderful people during our week stay. The beach and weather couldnt be nicer (our trip was in mid feb). I highly recommend staying here!

Room Tip: We had a room near the pool on the first floor, but i would recommend staying in a room on the secon...

Royal Hideaway Playacar
Quintana Roo, Mexico

Overall: Nice, luxurious resort with very friendly, competent staff.
We were checked in quickly, took a short walk to our room and our bags arrived with the bell staff a couple of minutes after we got there – we hadn’t even finished looking over the room. Check out was equally efficient, and the bell staff were there to pick up our bags and get them to the front about 3 minutes after we called. We had one problem with the safe and the security man to fix it was there about 5 minutes after we told our concierge Hector (battery replacement, without actually opening the safe!). Our ‘in building’ concierge, Hector and the housekeeping staff were always around during the day and very cheerful and efficient getting whatever we asked for. The food was excellent – probably the best ‘all inclusive’ food and drink I’ve experienced (I’ve been to about 20 all inclusive resorts through Mexico and the Caribbean).
The resort seems accessible. I am completely mobile but I notices ramps and paths everywhere, and an elevator in the main building to get from the lobby to the lower floor and upper floor. I didn’t see anyone with a wheelchair but several with canes that seemed to be managing fine. I didn’t see anywhere that didn’t have a ramp beside the stairs, including one down to the beach. I’m not sure if there was a ramp into the pools, but there were shallow steps and handrails so sitting & lowering into the pool would be possible.

Details:
Room.
Very clean. Nicely laid out. We had King bed. There were two night tables/chest of drawers with two drawers about 2.5 ft (75 cm) wide plus a large chest of drawers & a walk in closet. Lots of clothes storage & hanging space and shelves. With hangers. Safe in closet.

Bathroom had separate toilet, two sinks, jacuzzi bathtub, shower with large rain shower & hand hose sprayer, and a weigh scale. Lots of towels, including two beach towels (with more easily available at a towel stand near the main pools). Facecloths, plus soap shampoo etc, and a container with q-tips, cotton balls & face wipes.
Room had large flat screen tv with satellite tv, Bose sound system with ipod dock. Two phones in room plus one in toilet.
Mini bar fridge in the room is kept stocked with water, soft drinks & a couple of beer.
There's a coffee maker with coffee & tea.

Sliding doors to patio/ balcony. Ours was ground floor and small but nice & clean. Two padded chairs & small round table.
Buildings are around an open courtyard/ atrium with three floors. A concierge is assigned to each building & is at a desk 8am - 5pm each day to organize reservations at restaurants or extra drinks in the mini bar, any thing you need to know about the resort etc. Very available and helpful.

Wifi though out the resort including on the beach, in restaurants, around the pools, in the room. We didn't find anywhere that we couldn't get the wifi. Good signal & throughput for the most part.

Restaurants
The restaurants are all a la carte rather than buffet style with the exception of Spices at breakfast. Good service at all the restaurants. The portions are not too big, so it is possible to have and enjoy three courses at the dinners without bursting. The house wines include a sauvignon blanc, a pino grigio and a chardonnay for the whites, and a merlot for the red (there were other reds, but we didn’t try them). All quite acceptable quality.

Spices - open for breakfast & lunch. The breakfast buffet is extensive, with a huge selection of fruits (pineapple, cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, grapefruit, kiwi, lychees, oranges, guava, papaya, starfruit, several I don't know) and a selection of yogurts. A bread & bagel station with toaster (very slow toaster), another station with croissants, danish, pastries, pain au chocolate, etc. A selection of cereals, granola, with additions (cranberries, raisins, nuts), milk, whole and skim. A selection of cheeses (cream cheeses - plain, herbed, with smoked salmon), brie, gouda, etc., cold cut meats, smoked salmon, capers, onions. An omelet & egg station where the chef does your eggs/omelet however you like (lots of different veggies, ham, bacon, etc). A smoothie station where they blend your smoothie or juice from a selection of fruits, etc. A hot buffet with scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, breakfast sandwiches, lots of Spanish meats & sauces, fish, hash browns, potatoes, pancakes, waffles, etc. Coffee, tea, juice & water served at the table.
We didn’t end up at Spices for lunch but looked at the menu & it was the same as the dinner menu.
For dinner it is Mexican and Caribbean food – tuna appetizer was good, fish of the day – grouper - was excellent.
The Deck is the other lunch spot – sandwiches, salads, ceviches, quesadillas, hamburgers & fries. All good. Appetizer of corn chips with salsa & guacamole. Corn chips are fresh & crisp, very tasty. As was the salsa & guacamole.
At dinner, the Deck turns into the Grill. The gravalax & organic greens salad is very good. The dinners are a ‘pick your fish or meat (salmon, tuna, shrimp, prawns or rib eye, tenderloin, chicken breast, pork chop, rack of lamb), pick a sauce to go with it (garlic, lime-cilantro, chimichurri, mushroom) then add veggies & potatoes. All cooked ‘just right’ (in my opinion) as ordered. And the pineapple-mint sorbet refresher was a nice touch. I never managed dessert.

Las Ventanas is the international restaurant. I had the salad, and the salmon, both were excellent. My husband had the duck magret salad, and the beef tenderloin. Both looked wonderful & he enjoyed them. The watermelon-mint sorbet refresher was nice. And I had the lime-coconut-champagne ice cream. That combo wasn’t to my taste although it sounds good.

Palazzo is the Italian restaurant. I had the scallop carpaccio, my husband had the beef carpaccio. Both were succulent & melt in the mouth. I had the green salad, my husband the Caesar salad. Both very good. We skipped the soup. I had the seafood spaghetti, my husband the pork chop. Both were excellent. No dessert for either of us.

We didn’t go to the asian restaurant (Azia), the dinner theatre (Club Royale) or the Chef’s Table.

Room Service
We had room service dinner one night and that was good. We had salads, I had a veggie pasta and my husband had a steak (or burger? Can’t recall). And a bottle of wine. All good.

Bars
The bars were all full service – wines, beers, mixed drinks. Brand name vodka, scotches, liquers. Good lime daquiri. The deck bar is always busy. The piano bar was very elegant, and the Allegria bar was nice for a drink before dinner. The deck bar serves the beach and pools throughout the day – just pop a green flag by your beach lounger & they’ll come take your order and cheerfully and quickly deliver drinks.

The Beach
Very wide and long beach of soft white shell sand. The wind was up while we were there, so lots of surf and waves coming on shore. Good swimming but a fairly strong current. I would not advise a weak swimmer to attempt it. The flag was red (swimming not advised) and yellow (caution when swimming) all of the days we were there. There is a lifeguard when the yellow flag is up. The beach has lots of lounge chairs and canopy shades. We were able to sit in a canopy (moveable, covers 2 loungers) when we wanted to sit on the beach, but we went out about 8:30 or 9am and ‘claimed’ one. With the canopy we could get all the shade we needed or sun if we wanted.

Pools
There are two main pools with near the beach, both about the same size, with stairs/steps to sit on/get into the pools. Lots of lounge chairs around the pools with terry covered cushions and towels laid out in the morning and more available at the towel stand. Also off to the side were double bed sized lounging beds – sometimes one or two of these was available, but we didn’t try them out. There is a large Jacuzzi pool – 20x10 feet (approx) and a couple of smaller ones – 8-10 ft round.
Also scattered around the property are three smaller ‘relaxing’ pools with whirlpools and a few (6-8) lounge chairs and umbrellas. One was heated and two were not. Very quiet, with a very shallow wading or sitting & cooling off part. Nice if you wanted a bit of peace and quiet.

Fitness center
The fitness center has 4 or 5 treadmills with programs, each with individual tv & entertainment console (games to play while you’re running if you want) overlooking a pool that looked like it could be used for lengths. Then there was a separate area with a rower, elliptical, lifecycle bikes, universal gym type machines, free weights, and a yoga mat or two with a balance ball.
Water and ice tea in the cooler, with towels supplied in two sizes – small for the gym, larger for swimming. Earphones supplied at the spa front desk if you forgot yours.

Spa
I didn’t use the spa so I won’t comment on it.

Library
There was a small library with shelves with books organized by language. Looked like mostly what the people had left behind. Beach reading.

Shopping.
There were several small shops – clothing, bags, jewelry, and a convenience store with hats, sandals, sunscreen, sunglasses, candy, snacks, medicines (we needed cough lozenges). Prices were reasonable about what I’d expect to pay at home.
Just down the street from the resort (out the front entrance and go left, you can see it from the entrance) is a Starbucks, and a plaza with a drugstore & deli, a beachwear store or two, and a number of small kiosks with ceramics, crafts, hats, souvenirs.

First let me begin by saying I have never posted a review of anything, and felt compelled to write a review about this resort. Before this trip, we had never been to mexico so I can't speak to how this compares to other resorts, but I cannot understand how anyone would leave a terrible review unless they have impossibly high standards. We read through many reviews before we arrived, and I mostly want to address all the errors in what people have had to say negative about this place. Our room was fantastic, though we rarely spent any time in it having a beautiful beach so close. I will attempt to list things one by one.

The Room: As i said, fantastic, our air conditioner worked almost too well, we had to turn it down to keep it from getting too cold. The maids came every morning and returned the room to the way it looked when we arrived, every night while we were at dinner they came through again and did a turn down service getting the room ready for be (closing shades, removing the decorative pillows, etc) every day they left a piece of paper with all the events of the day, times for all the restaurants, dress codes etc. To all the people who complained about things like rust, peeling wallpaper, cracking paint etc NEWSFLASH its mexico, its humid, and the salty beach humidity destroys everything fast, we didn't notice any rust or cracking paint, the only wall paper was in the bathroom (or toilet room to be precise) and while it had obviously peeled at one of the seems and been repaired, it really wasn't that important to have a pristine place to use the bathroom. The only accurate complaint is the water temperature in the shower, ours fluctuated a lot, I found it more funny than anything, certainly wouldn't consider it a huge inconvenience.

Our concierge. Juan Luis was great, always friendly and asking about our day, stocking the mini bar with different beer for me to try, offering to help in any way, even though we rarely needed his help.

The beach: Beautiful, white sand, clear water, very clean, we swam in the ocean every day, and went kayaking which was free for an hour every day. We are early risers, and every morning at 7 when we would head out for breakfast, there were people on the beach removing sea weed and picking up trash. The quality of the beach is especially evident if you walk a mile down the beach to were the resorts end and you can see what it looks like when people don't come through daily to groom it. There are more than enough chairs on the beach, many have shades that pull over the top if you don't want the direct sun, but they tend to fill up quick, on your way to breakfast it is easy to walk out and leave a book or magazine to reserve it, and everyone seemed to respect claiming them in that way, we really didn't care since we enjoyed being in the sun.

The Pool(s): There are 5 pools on the property, 3 are smaller "relaxing" pools located between the villas not meant for swimming, just hanging out with a drink, 2 of the 3 have hot tubs. There are 2 large pools down by the beach, right next to the deck bar and restaurant, one is an infinity pool, there is also a larger hot tub right next to them, and 3 smaller hot tubs right by the beach. The chairs around the pools are cushioned and have umbrellas, these also usually get claimed fairly early, something that didn't affect us because we preferred to be on the beach in the sun with the ocean breeze blowing.

The property: Amazing, every morning and throughout the day, there were groundskeepers attending to EVERYTHING, resealing the decks/bridges over the water, trimming plants and trees, sweeping, washing the sidewalks so that it always looked amazing. Most things were done early before people were out and about.

The best part-THE FOOD: My wife is gluten free, and every place we ate did a wonderful job of catering to her need, they brought her gluten free bread at the buffet breakfast, and made any necessary changes to meals.

Breakfast-there is a buffet style restaurant upstairs by the pools called Spices, with an amazing view of the beach from the windows, and a few outdoor tables on patio. There was an omelet station, a smoothie station, a mountain of various breads, a whole table devoted to various cheeses and cream cheeses as well as meats like smoked salmon, cured ham etc, and multiple chafing dishes with the usual bacon, sausage, eggs, as well as some local fare They opened every day at 7.
The deck-opened at 8 and was a sit down restaurant also open for lunch, it had an indoor portion and an outdoor portion that was literally on the beach, with amazing views and a great ocean breeze. They had things like eggs benedict, lox bagel, french toast, waffles etc, and it was all great.

Lunch-The lunch at the deck was fantastic, we ate there every day of our stay and never had the same thing twice, we especially enjoyed the selection of ceviche appetizers like tuna tartar, and the shrimp. There were burger, pizzas, nachos, various grilled options etc. There was also a daily "grill" poolside which they set up buffet style with something different every day, one day they built a fire pit and made the largest dish of sea food pallela I have ever seen. It was especially great because you didn't need to change out of your pool gear, and could eat poolside in your swimsuit. There was sometimes a wait for an outdoor table, and at times the service wasn't necessarily speedy, but I had NO problem sitting on a deck in the sun, with an ocean breeze and cocktail in hand, waiting to get our food.

Dinner. We only ate at AZIA, and Ventanas, however there was also The Grill which we heard good things about, and Pallazzo which had italian food. Azia was awesome, we had a dozen or more pieces of sushi for dinner, I had an amazing ahi tempura, and they even imported Sapporo beer to keep with the Asian theme. Ventanas is their signature restaurant, and one that you absolutely have to try, and was INCREDIBLE, they do small plates with small portions so you can try many things instead of filling up on one. My entre salmon was cooked perfectly and was a good sized especially after an appetizer of mussles, and a pallet cleanser. The service was incredibly helpful, pulling out chairs for my wife, placing napkins in our laps, coming by often to check on us, recommending dishes etc. We did have a reservation get lost one night, but prior to dinner every night the concierge drops off a reservation confirmation which we brought with us, and after showing it to the host, he apologized and took us to our table.

The bars: The bartenders at the deck bar were awesome, throughout the day at the beach we would stop by for cocktails (or we could just wait for them to walk out to the beach and take a cocktail order. They had endless options, everything was always tasty and well made. Some people had complained in reviews about the "bottom shelf" liquor. To that I say DUH, there isn't alot of point to putting top shelf liqour in a daiquiri or pina colada, but they will and they have a very complete bar, i noticed about 8 types of rum, probably a dozen tequilas, multiple vodkas, whiskey from jim beam to makers mark and crown royal, and loads more that I never bothered to try. They have a great cocktail menu, but will also make you literally any drink you can dream up. The restaurant bars were equally great.

This is definitely a resort geared towards couples, it is 21 and up and for the most part seems to be more like 35 and up. We are a younger couple but very much enjoyed the couples friendly atmosphere, and the slightly older crowd made for a much more relaxing environment, as opposed to a drunk rowdy college spring break atmosphere. It allowed us the chance to spend alot of quality time as a couple, and really enjoy our time to ourselves. The loud music at nights from the neighboring resorts is something that you notice, nothing that bothered us, and I don't see how you would completely escape it at any resort.

THE BOTTOM LINE-anyone who has time to complain about a place like this, probably complains about everything. Small portions-sort of, we really enjoyed having smaller portions so that we could try multiple things, 2 or 3 appetizers, entrees, and dessert without feeling completely stuffed was awesome. Bad rooms-not at all, we loved our room. Poor service-we never had a single bad encounter, I feel like some of the servers miss out not working in a tipping environment because we had some top notch service especially at ventanas. We had the best vacation of our lives here, and were incredibly sad to leave. If you are looking for a great place to relax, a great place to eat and drink, and a great place to escape, the royal hideaway is definitely it. We will be back

Royal Hideaway is a very nice place with very good food and exceptional service. Rooms are nice and a little worn due to the age of the resort and the salt air, but still very nice. Unfortunately, very few of the rooms here have a view of the sea due to the design of the complex.

The service on the beach, by the pool, and in every restaurant was excellent.

Wife and I checked in and sort of noticed that the resort was a little old. We tried to think of it as "quaint", but shortly we noticed we were wrong. The service is atrocious, food is terrible and the wait time to get anything is absolutely ridiculous. Rooms are old and beat up. Our AC didn't even work and they couldn't fix it. There really is no workout place - 3 treadmills. We waited forever at the beach grill for food only to get a small portion that was terrible. You have to get reservations for dinner and we tried to do that right away (were going to say 5 days) to get times only to have open slots at 10 and 1030 pm. Huh? We went to one of the restaurants that night - 8pm. They didn't have our reservation (although we made it with the concierge) and said that they had a "system" so they couldn't get us into the place nor any other place. What? This is an all-inclusive right? We complained only to have the manager try to get us into another place an hour later. Bottom line it was HORRIBLE and we left the next day. Don't let anyone (especially travel agents) tell you that this place is any good at all! It is a total waste of time. We went to the Grand Velas resort and it was a thousand times better for the same price! I really think the Royal Hideaway is losing money and is skimping as much as they can.
