My girlfriend and I normally check the reviews on restaurants before we eat, especially when going abroad ... If we had bothered to check on this occasion it would have saved us eating at what can only be described as a tourist trap. Located toward the western end of 5th avenue, it certainly looks the part with the white chairs and pianist. I'll cut to the chase. The waitress was nice but inept and took down the order incorrectly for an asparagus pizza, bringing out a ham pizza instead meaning we had to eat out mains seperately. There is no wine list, the reason for this being that it's the thick end of 400 pesos a glass, they bring out bread sticks that our not complimentary then charge you another 400 pesos for the privilege. All in all for one over cheesed flobby pizza and an ordinary spag bol, with undercooked anaemic packet brought calamari and a couple of drinks it added up to 1500 pesos. We ate in that's amore the night before for almost a third of the price and the food was far superior and pizza in a different class. Save yourself the bother of going here!!!!!!!!

From the outside, this is a beautiful place. Think Blackbeard in the West Indies.
But, it's really really hot inside. As in leather chairs and humidity and 90 degrees sitting in a pool of sweat hot.
Next up- the food. Not bad, but thin crust pizza, with a FEW toppings- took awhile. Crusts seemed remade, so not sure what the problem was.
The total charge? For one glass of HOUSE wine, one bottle of water, and one personal size pizza? $50 USD.
REALLY.
when we asked for an explanation of an erroneous EVA charge, they said it was an additional tax. No further explanation.
Um, no other restaurant charges this tax anywhere in Playa.
Beware- we don't think this is your next place to eat.

A friend of ours told us about this restaurant, so we decided to stop in for dinner and drinks. The decor of the restaurant was beautiful, and there is a piano player that will take requests. Our server was really friendly, and went over all the dinner and drink special. I ended up trying the lasagna, which was excellent, and my husband had the pizza. He said it was some of the best he has had in Playa. All of the food looked really good, and we plan to go back on our next trip and try something different.

I go to Playa Del Carmen on business quite often and I very much enjoyed this restaurant.
I enjoyed it enough that I wanted to write a review.

I went to Trip Advisor to write and I started to read the other reviews. Some reviews are bad; surprisingly bad. There were so many bad reviews that had I checked Trip Advisor ahead of my visit, I probably would have gone elsewhere. I actually own a restaurant, among a couple of other businesses and I too am on Trip Advisor. I know how valuable it is to my businesses, but I also know that it can be exploited. All I can say is that I enjoyed my experience at the Madarina's Café very much. I love to sit and enjoy my meal and watch all the happy people from many other Countries walk by. The location is awesome. The restaurant's décor is pleasant and caught my eye as I walked by. My pasta was excellent and I saw someone order pizza next to me. It looked delicious and I remember thinking I would order pizza next time I come. So.. I plan to return. This should be the main point of my review.

The main tourist area in Playa is the long 5th avenue. 5th avenue is a pricier place to eat in Playa than further back streets. Restaurants on 5th have more competition, pay much more rent or land taxes so.. you may pay a little more than 8 or 10 blocks back from the water. This is just common sense that any traveler should know. Also, when I was there, the menu and prices were out for viewing before entering so, really, the issue of pricing should be mute. The Mandarina's Cafe prices were online with 5th avenue.

I guess I am writing a different review than what I started out to write because after reading so many bad (and dare I say, suspicious) reviews, I feel, I have to defend the restaurant; rather than just review it.

Trip Advisor is a valuable tool for travelers and newcomers, and should be a trustworthy place to go for information. Trip Advisor is not, however, a weapon to try and damage competition. If this is really the case; shame on the guilty parties. The Mandarina's Café is a perfectly fine restaurant. And I will return...especially now.
