Private pools attached to your private villa. Grounds/buildings are kept immaculately clean. Service was prompt/almost intuitive, with a smile and NEVER in your face. Not commercialized at all. So close to historic, cultural and natural explorations. Security is amazing. World class a+++spa.

Real luxury in very large villas, with private pools and real privacy if you want it. However this is a huge luxury resort. If you are looking for exclusive, boutique style, intimate luxury don't stay here. If resort size Is not important and you are happy to get a 10 mins golf buggy ride to the beach, or a 5-10 minute walk to the main hotel facilities then stay here. Staff as you would expect excellent, food very good, extensive breakfast - continental at $28 - with no alternative as the resort is a drive away from any alternative. Gym a little small and some of the equipment a little dated. If you are a keen scuba diver go to Dive Aventuras - a great set up, excellent dive masters and good value. So, terrific resort hotel - but big!

To exceed providing luxury travel a brand must deliver the big 3. The big 3 are not to be taken lightly and slipping up on one of them could be fatal. Below I will introduce them to you and share my thoughts on how Banyan Tree Mayakoba in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico adds up. I recently spent 8 days entrenched at the property and got to experience true luxury on the Mexican Mayan Riviera. Banyan Tree Mayakoba is about a 40 minute easy ride from the Cancun airport to the small area called Playa Del Carmen. This was my first encounter with the Banyan Tree brand.

What are the big 3 that define luxury travel? In my opinion, they are…

1. A Sense of Place. A location has to make you say wow. It has to have energy and cache. Banyan Tree Mayakoba has a very large footprint within a massive compound called Mayakoba. You are smack center in Mexican jungle every step you take. From tropical birds and coatis around every corner to turtles and crocodiles lurking in the lagoon, it is a true exotic playground. Many different birds talk non stop to the point you think they are “piping it in” like Disney World. It’s all real and it’s incredible. Keep an eye out for Sophia which is the Banyan Tree Croc that lives near the pedestrian bridge on the way to the beach.

There are 2 pools, one beachside and one at the very iconic main building. There are no standard rooms….it’s all villas. There are beach villas, lagoon villas and golf villas. One complaint I heard prior to arriving was that everything was really spread out and that you had to take a shuttle everywhere. It’s a breeze to get around. You call for a buggy (a.k.a. Gold Cart) and they swiftly come and pick you up for wherever you want to go. The staff is fast, polite and eager to please. Not once was I annoyed by the golf cart system. It’s a massive property with tons to explore. There really is no other way to move people around and you could also walk to many places. There is also a lagoon system that can transport you to many places and also that can take you on nature tours.

At any given time, you may stumble upon a celebrity. I spoke with a few repeat guests who had sightings ranging from Leo DiCaprio to Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones.

A sense of place is definitely achieved with loads of options for a great experience. All of the above is simply a snapshot. There are also 2 other resorts on property were you can explore and dine (Rosewood and Fairmont) and Mexico’s only PGA Golf Course called “El Camaleon” which weaves through the jungled surrounded Banyan Tree property. It’s an ocean course and it is one of the finest looking golf courses I have ever seen. If you are a golfer, you might as well book a tee time as you will be taunted by the beauty and be craving to hit the little white ball. There is also a full gym and spa.

2. Comfort and Service. The service at Banyan Tree Mayakoba is off the charts phenomenal and rampant. Every employee you come across will have a genuine smile and be eager to help you in any way you need. It is rare to see a staff excelling at this level of service for which I saw over 8 days. From the lawn guys to the front desk, it was truly impressive to watch the team work.

The villas are on par with some of the nicest luxury travel destinations I have seen around the world. The decor is Spanish with a dash of Asian flare. Every villa type has a decent sized plunge pool and some have hot tubs. The beds are super comfortable. The showers are AWESOME. All villa types are very spacious. There are only a handful of beach villas which are distant from the lobby and all the other villas. The beach villas are by the beach pool and one restaurant, Sands. The golf villas have 2 and 3 bedrooms and are along the 17th hole of the golf course. The lagoon villas are very interesting with 1 or 2 bedrooms and a separate living area and outdoor bath tub and shower. All of the villas have vibrant colors and attractive dark textured tile floors. Nothing is forgotten with the design and layout of the villas and the daily service is attentive without being intrusive. A nice addition could be adding a washer/dryer. All villas have a distinct feel of privacy. I, not once, heard another guest in or outside of my villa.

3. Food. Even the biggest and best brands struggle in some areas of the food experience. Banyan Tree Mayakoba excels at the highest level. Over 8 days I never ran out of choices and never had even an average meal. There are 4 restaurants: Sands (casual), Oriente (Casual), Saffron (Casual Chic) and Tamarind (Casual Chic). The room service is also executed seamlessly with the overall dining experience. The food delivery was always fast, hot and tasty with options from all the main menus.

Another great option if you get tired of restaurant dining is to eat at the bar in the open air lobby which has large portion appetizers and great seating areas overlooking the "Banyan Tree".

Oriente - The breakfast spot with one of the most expansive buffets I have ever seen. It’s all there. Every fruit, carb, meat and type of egg dish you can image. Flip flops and bathing suits are the attire of most.

Sands - Mostly open for lunch and sometimes dinner on busy nights. A nice menu ranging from tropical chicken gourmet pizza to salads with fresh seafood on top. You can dine inside behind huge sliding glass windows, in a few patio areas or poolside. The guacamole is stellar.

Saffron - One of two of the more formal dinner options. Most dining is on outdoor decks in the shadows of the main building but there are about 10 tables in a small glass dining room that is very interesting. Careful going at sunset as the bugs come out for about 30 minutes from the lagoon below you and they are hungry. They do have bug spray for free if you need it. There are some tasty appetizer options like the fried pasta wrapped shrimp and the Pad Thai is the star.

Tamarind - The most formal evening option which is continental. Don’t let the formal scare you. You can do jeans and a nice shirt and be fine. The food is out of this world. The service is even more out of this world. The filet was cooked perfectly and the salad was very tasty and exotic with fruit and nuts mixed in.

Across the board, Banyan Tree Mayakoba really understands the dining experience. There is not one complaint that I can come up with and I usually have no problem offering up some constructive criticism for restaurants.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba is a unique, sexy vacation experience that I would definitely return to in the near future.

Stayed at Banyan Tree for a destination wedding. The food was very good and the grounds were kept very nice. The rooms nice (had your own pool) but very humid and expensive. The only negative things I can say is the beach is a little small and you need to take golf carts every where. You need to call the front desk, they pick you up and drop you off (a little bit of a pain). You can rent bikes which may make it easier. The golf course looks beautiful and the Fed Ex Cup is being played their 2015. All in all had a great time with my family, but it is definitely NOT FOR KIDS!! If you are going with a group you will have fun but since its not all inclusive it will be expensive. Lunch for two averages $65 to $75 no drinks. Dinner for 5 at their exclusive restaurant $600.00 (way to much) . Fill up on the Buffet breakfast that's included.

I think the Banyan is a great property but has some funny quirks which are not so practical. The food is excellent and so is the service but the kids club is poor.

I also think the villa rooms can smell a bit damp so you want to avoid one that does.

Overall a very nice holiday location with godo service.

Room Tip: Golf Villas can smell strongly of damp and baths /showers often seem to have issues but great for fa...

This is an awesome resort. We have been to many great hotels and resorts and although I have always liked them this is the only one where I felt like taking the time to write a review.
Pros- outstanding accommodation, very clean ( and I am v fussy about this!), aesthetically outstanding and all amenities that a true luxury holiday promises. The beach was clean and v well serviced as was the beach side pool. Fresh wholesome breakfast with outstanding service and food overall was to die for! In villa dining was great. The saffron restaurant had a truly romantic and uplifting ambience although the food was IMO not the best Thai- although I don't eat sea food so maybe I am the wrong person to comment on the food. The one thing that made this resort truly special was the service - nothing was impossible here for the staff!
Cons - none really but it would be great if the hotel could organise a private snorkelling/ scuba activity even if it is off site.

Room Tip: We stayed in the sanctuary pool villa but I think all their properties are gorgeous!
