Stayed 3 nights for a wedding in summer 2012. A bit of a drive to get to the resort from the airport, but the property itself was beautiful and impressive. We were in a villa with a pool, and the villa itself and the pool were great. Villa was spacious, had a great walk-in closet area, the bathroom was nice as well. Did not love the fact that it was so far to get to the restaurants, spa, etc., and required calling for a driven golf car every time unless we wanted a 10-15 minute walk.

And definitely did not love the overabundance of mosquitoes. I got bitten up so much any time I stepped outside that it really detracted from the overall experience and led me to not enjoy our private pool and garden area nearly as much as we would have.

Otherwise service was outstanding and the spa was nice and relaxing as well.

I spent four nights here in a villa with one building being the bedroom/bathroom and the other being a living area and what a joy. Complete quiet and the pool backed to a river and I don't think the units on either side were occupied. Just the sound of birds and ducks.
You have to either take a long walk or call for a chauffeured golf cart to go anywhere but I didn't consider this a problem. The living ares are simply luxurious. And the individual pools are clean and quite large and a deep blue, not black as some photos may lead you to believe.
Negatives: Internet connection is slower than dial-up for those who that might be important. The beach wasn't turquoise blue - soft sand like Cancun (which I spent part of the week in) - it was rather rougher and very very rocky in parts. And the biggest sin of all: we had the option for evening dining at two restaurants - Saffron and Tamarind and both have a "open air" construction, in fact half of Saffron is outside over the water. Being from Texas I am not a fan of outdoor eating at 9 oclock at night and it took some getting used to but even "inside" there are no windows. OK, so far that's OK. But this is a spa hotel and they have a no-smoking policy (at least they say so) and we're at their classiest restaurant eating a quiet meal on a long deck and the couple next to us both light up 3 times and toss their butts over? And the waiter is chit-chatting with them? Fortunately the Thai main hostess I think saw this and made a bee-line FINALLY and the "lovely" smell of the cigarette smoke over the peaceful waters dining experience stopped. But that waiter should have bound there in the instant they lit up.

Tip: call "guest services" first thing in the morning to set a villa clean up time AND do it again for the second service in the evening - boy was it spotless after each visit.

My husband and I attended a wedding at the resort. The weekend was one of the most luxurious holidays we ever had--the daily fresh juices, the night time turn down service, the welcome drink, the fabulous restaurants and the impeccable service was a real treat. We rented a townhouse villa--the rooftop pool was a bit too cold but the soaking tub in the AMAZING bathroom ( and delicious toiletries) made up for it. The beachside pool was my favorite, especially since the beach was a bit narrow though the service at the beach--cabanas, towels, drinks, lunch!--were awesome.

My wife and I stayed at Banyan Tree Mayakoba over the Valentine's Day weekend. We arrived that Thursday and rented a car. It's a short drive, approximately 30 minutes. There's only one highway, so you can't get lost. Upon arrival, you're escorted by the hostess to your villa. After a short tour, we were left to our own devices. The villa is simply amazing. It's composed of two buildings. One houses the bedroom and the bathroom. The other contains the "living area". In between the two buildings lie the heated pool and jacuzzi. You literally can step right out of your bedroom and into the pool. It's long enough where you can actually do laps in it. The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was huge with a walk-in closet and a huge overhead shower. There's also an outdoor tub; however, we didn't really use it. The grounds were impeccable. Since we had a car, we drove into Playa del Carmen every night for dinner. It's about a 15 minute drive, and once you find parking, you can pretty much walk to whichever restaurant you want. During the day, there's basically three ways to get to the beach. You can walk, but it's a good long walk. Good exercise. Or you can rent bikes. They're inexpensive and quite fun. Or you can simply catch a ride on the boat, sit back, and relax. The beach is small, but there's really not alot of people so it's irrelevant. The complimentary breakfast buffet is quite good. Lots of choices. Fresh food. Service throughout the resort was excellent. There's no disputing that fact. All in all, the Banyan Tree was simply unbelievable. Like no other place we've ever visited. If you're looking for solitude, then how can you not want your own private villa?

Let me start by saying my husband and I came here during high spring break season so it was packed with families and kids. The price tag is steep. Many of the rooms are far from the beach, but the golf carts do come pretty quickly when called. The restaurants were all good. Would pass on saffron and the buffet restaurant, but do recommend the Mediterranean restaurant. We had a garden view villa and am glad we didn't pay more for spa villa. Our room and yard with small pool were lovely. Our spa experience was fabulous! Get the Thai couples massage! The beach is smallish, and you need to get to beach pool early to get chairs.

Many services like in garden dining and the food is sensational.
My wife and i chose this as our first destination and a year and a half after we still think that this is the best honeymoon decision.
