“Counting Down the Days til We Go Back”
Reviewed December 23, 2013

Our family (2 grandparents, 6 adults and 6 grandchildren ages 6-16) have spent the past 4 Thanksgivings at the Grand Velas and we are more than thankful that we have discovered heaven on earth. There is nothing not to like, and everything to love, about this wonderful, first-class family resort. Incredibly, it keeps getting better each year.

We stay in the Ambassador section overlooking the pool and the ocean and from the minute we walk into our rooms, we feel like we are at home. Big comfy beds, roll-away cots that come with fluffy duvets and bed ruffles (and that our 6 feet tall, 15-year old happily claimed as his own), huge bath towels, a gigantic whirlpool bathtub that my 6-year old niece "swam" in each night, and luscious bath products from L'Occitaine all combine to make you feel pampered. The mini-bar is stocked with a wide variety of delicious food and drinks and once the staff knows what you like, the fridge is heaped with those items.

The food at the Grand Velas is delicious. We always look forward to our first dinner at Luca for Italian food and my niece starts talking about the fried bananas at Sen Lin before our plane even lands. The French food at Pilaf is elegant and delicious. Despite the high caliber of the food and restaurants, the waitstaff is always friendly and engaging and always made our tableful of teenagers feel welcomed and cherished. (They also served them more quickly than the adults so the kids could get to the Teen Club as soon as possible). We loved breakfast at Azul, the buffet restaurant by the pool. Although each of us has a favorite item (I am partial to the perfectly peeled grapefruit segments on the fruit bar, my kids love the omelette station and my husband longs for his class of fresh-squeezed tangerine juice), everything is freshly prepared and delicious. Ditto for the buffet at lunch.

Although the Grand Velas is a luxury resort, it has recently upped its game with respect to activities for kids. The new Teen Club is wonderful. Our kids enjoyed karoke, X-box, play station, ping pong, pool and just hanging out with their new friends from around the world. Rafael, the coordinator was a delight. As were the two staff members devoted to kids' activities. Our kids loved slip and slide soccer (the video we shot still makes them belly laugh), the dunking booth, water balloon beach volleyball, the ropes course and the gigantic "soccer ball" in the pool that they ran around in like gerbils. They were also fascinated by the Cirque D'Solei-type performance poolside. Younger kids love the kids club which this year made beautiful Thanksgiving outfits and baskets.

The staff at the Grand Velas is superb. Guierllmo (Kaya), our concierge welcomed us as we arrived and took great care of us the entire time we were at the resort. He arranged for roll away beds, extra snacks in our rooms, switched our rooms per our request we thought our parents would prefer a room farther down the hall but then, and when we realized that we had made a mistake in switching the rooms because my sister needed two beds and our parents only needed the one king-sized bed he offered to repack our suitcases and move us back to the rooms he had originally chosen for us so that we would not have to be inconvenienced. Kaya confirmed our cab reservation, made sure that our restaurant reservations were in order and checked in with us regularly to make sure there was nothing else that we needed. Santiago, our pool attendant, was wonderful. After the first day, he knew where our family liked to sit, made sure we had plenty of fluffy towels (he didn't want the kids to be cold when they finally got out of the pool), knew we liked Bloody Marys and Mimosas in the morning, a variety of drinks during the day and that the kids often liked a late-afternoon snack. After the second day, he began to just bring the kids a snack when he saw them emerge from the pool or come back from the beach. One day he even decided that we would all enjoy ice cream sundaes poolside. How right he was. He was kind, thoughtful and a pleasure to get to know. Finally, as I said above, Rafael in the Teen Club was a gem.

Each year, we can't imagine the Grand Velas getting better and each year, it exceeds our expectations. My sister noted in an earlier review that the only thing the 14 of us could think of that would have made our trip better was if there were more hooks in the bathroom for wet bathing suits. I would have to add that the one other thing that would make our trip better was if we could stay even longer.

The Grand Velas is a gem.

Mrs. Judy, I thank you so much for sharing your personal feelings on your visits to your second home here in Grand Velas Riviera Maya. I will also like to say from the start, that it would certainly be my pleasure to meet you in person on your next Thanksgiving with us, as I am sure that it will not be the last.

I note in your review your absolute detail to attention, especially in regards to the happiness of the young ones. I am overjoyed that we were able to create a sense of importance and focus on them. Just to hear that your niece is anxious for the fried bananas before touching down in the airplane really makes us feel that we created some long-lasting smiles from your previous trips.

I would certainly like to know Judy what it is, that we could possible do in order that your next family visit be as successful as, or more so, than those in which you describe here. On behalf of Rafael, Guillermo and our 1,200 staff I truly thank you for your loyalty. And please note that your happiness is spread amongst us as we read your comments.

Thank you again and may your winter be one of smiles. Take care.

We stayed in Grand Velas Zen suites in December and the whole stay was perfect from start to finish. Facilities, beach, amazing wildlife but above all the hotel staff made our holiday an unforgettable one. Restaurants were amazing, our favourite being Sen Lin, which we highly recommend. We dined there 4 times, every time greeted by the lovely restaurant staff, among which hostess Eunice with her welcoming smile and bar waitress Claudia were impressive going above and beyond always. Azul was the place to try the local Mexican food, to say this was perfect was an understatement. Sergio made us smile on a daily basis with his wit and humour and excellent service. Now to the beach area.......WOW. There is no way to describe the level of service here. All staff were fantastic, from Victor the manager who was always helpful and polite, Jorge the trainee who took joy in everything he did and made us feel completely at ease to Pablo who gave us an unforgettable meal on the beach front location and made us feel exceptionally special, a day that will last in our memories always. This holiday was simply the best. You must try this at least once in a lifetime. We certainly hope to revisit. London couple.

Thank you for your gracious comments on your holiday with us, and also for your personal recognition of some of our employees that helped to make your stay a memorable one. I am pleased that our Zen ambience was to your taste and that in general all of our facilities were to your liking. The theme of your commentary is certainly the service staff and the personal touches that helped to make an impression during your stay. Claudia, Eunice, Sergio, Victor, Pablo and our apprentice Jorge will be made aware of their service achievements that culminated in a very satisfied guest and a successful visit. We certainly hope also that you will be able to return some day in order to relive the experience and revisit the friendships that you have formed here in Mexico. Thank you again, and we send our warm greetings to you in London. Take care.

We usually stay away from all inclusives due to the food and service, but we were shocked at how wonderful both were at this resort. All of the restaurants were great, with proactive service and attention to detail. They were truly "unique dining experiences", something that is unprecedented for an all inclusive. Ironically, the Mexican food was our least favorite.

The staff was flat out fantastic. They were all over us...all the time. Drink? Sure. Food? Right away sir. Towel? No problem. The character and charm of the staff was something we haven't seen at any of our various vacations at high-end resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean.

The property and pools were very well maintained, with gorgeous landscaping.

We were upgraded to a beach front suite with a splash pool - great layout. It was in the ambassador section, which I would recommend. The Zen section was a different feel, but also pretty cool. The jungle..if your into that.

We have been to nicer beaches, but it was well maintained and if there was calmer winds, we may have spent a day there. The water sports were closed due to the wind, which could have bothered someone who wanted to do water sports. We didn't. We sat by the pool and watched our 3 year old make friends in the shallow section. Was a great set-up for parents who want to lay peacefully and not overly obsess about pool safety.

The kids club and staff were flat out amazing. Our son loved going there, and we avoided the guilt that comes with the pre- dinner drop off because he ran in and never even looked back. Great facility and staff. He even came home with arts and crafts that he made.

Our hotel neighbor was a bit of a rock star one day, and I had to ask him to turn down the music at about 11:30 PM, which is late for us these days. He turned it down right away.

My wife's feedback on the spa: "unique and wonderful experience".

We would go back in New York minute.

Room Tip: Beach front ambassador.

Thank you for taking the time in sharing your experiences and thoughts on your December visit with your wife and three year old son. I am pleased that your little one made some great friends with our kid’s club staff. The friendliness of the personnel, combined with creative and colorful installations and a captivating activity program culminate into an unforgettable experience for many of our child clients. And in your case we were able to provide you with a worry free ambience for your son. I am also glad that you felt that the staff was “flat out fantastic”.

The close but unobtrusive service that is provided is an important aspect for our valued guests, and we treat our everyday mission as a pleasure in serving you. Thank you again for publishing your satisfaction on TripAdvisor, and for expressing that Grand Velas “is something that is unprecedented for an all inclusive”.

We wish you a happy winter and a prosperous 2014.

Great place to stay for family, groups and couples. Resort has three sections you can book under according to your visiting reasons. The staff are all so friendly, greet you by name, and make you feel like the most important guest. This all inclusive resort also has a world class Spa that you MUST experience, you will see what I mean when you do. You get more than a massage or facial but a whole spa experience that is so unreal. They have someone guide you through each step, and it's so well managed - like clockwork. The restaurants are also amazing, well above my expectations for an all inclusive resort. Everything is luxury. You will LOVE it.

Room Tip: if you're staying in Grand Class ask for room on the first floor (direct access to the beach) cl...

Thank you for your kind comments on your recent stay and also for traveling from so far to be with us.

That commitment on your part, and the trust that you put on us to provide an extraordinary experience makes us certainly proud and motivates all the more. I am greatly pleased to read that we greatly exceeded your expectations, resulting in your “best resort and spa experience”. That of course is our goal for all of our valued clients.

Your feelings on your spa experience really mirror the comments of many of our guests. It is something to truly be experienced in order to fully appreciate the overall level of quality of our treatments, rituals and installations. An “unreal” sensation, as you so surrealistically describe it. Please note that as a team we are honored that you selected us as your vacation destination and we would be doubly honored to be able to host you again in the future. Thank you, and our warmest greetings to you in Australia.

My husband and I are avid travelers and most of our vacations tend to beaches....we've traveled far and wide and have stayed at many hotels around the world and consider ourselves quite picky...Grand Velas surpassed all our expectations and is probably the best hotel we've stayed at. We were booked for the zen room and after one night realized we preferred the ambassador section...the hotel was happy to help us change our rooms as they had availability at no extra cost.

Food: The food was outstanding for an all inclusive hotel. The restaurants were all fine dining and our favorites were the French restaurant and Arturo Cocina that served an awesome 8 course molecular meal! A definite must try if you are visiting

Service: The Mexicans surpass the Thai at their hospitality. We we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by our driver saying "welcome to your home for the next 7 days" and it was better than home! Every few rooms have their own concierge and they take service to another level. The concierge makes restaurant reservations and is available for anything you need. Our concierge would come to the beach to let us know our dinner reservations were done which was just fabulous.

Kids: We have a 3 year old and he had a great time. He loved the kids club and since some restaurants were adults only this gave us an opportunity to have him there while we tried these restaurants.

The landscaping is beautiful...the pools are to die for...the beach is gorgeous....the views our beautiful...you are treated like royalty.

The only thing we could improve was the weather which the hotel had no control over.....we got some rain and the sun would go down 4:30pm even though it was bright till 6.

We would return in a heart beat to stay again!

Room Tip: I would pick a room on the ambassador side of the hotel if I visited again

Thank you for having decided on Grand Velas as your vacation destination this past December. It certainly is our goal to meet or surpass your personal expectations of a holiday and to read that we are probably “the best hotel” that you have stayed at sincerely makes us feel proud. I am glad that you enjoyed the dining options including our popular Cocina de Autor. It is really something innovative in our already leading-edge selection of restaurants. As parents of a three year old you know the importance of the enjoyment of little ones and so do we. Once they give the thumbs up on a pleasant experience the rest of the family can rest happily in knowing that all needs, for all ages are being taken care of. It pleases us to know that you would return again “in a heartbeat”, and please be rest assured that when you do come back, that we will do our best to provide you with more unforgettable memories. Thank you for your glowing comments and have a splendid winter.

This was my second trip staying at Grand Velas. I stayed there last year in the Grand Class building and had a great trip. This vacation we stayed in the Zen building. Although I LOVED the beach view and rooms in the Grand Class I was pleasantly surprised by Zen. It was so pretty and quiet.
The service at Grand Velas is really amazing. You never need or want for anything and if you do need something your room Butler will help you immediately. The food was all fabulous from Frida, to room service to food being delivered on beach. I travel to Mexico about 4 times a year and grand Velas is definitely on the top of my hotel list!

Thank you very much for your kind description of your experiences with us. As a repeat guest you now have enjoyed the benefits of residing in two of our three ambiances, and have lived and felt the positive aspects that each one offers. I am pleased to read that with all your Mexican vacation experience that you consider Grand Velas to be on the top of your hotel list. Our gastronomy selection is a very important and dynamic aspect for us and to hear that all your dining experiences were fabulous is very motivating to the entire food and beverage staff. Gran Velas is an amazing resort, where everything is more perfect that one can desire. Even to check in, you don't stand in front of any desk - you sit down as an employee come up to check you in. The rooms are gorgeous: spacious beyond belief, beautifully designed and furnished, equipped with everything, even the soap, hair conditioner and lotion are made in France.
The patio is wonderful, with a sea view, I stayed at the Ambassador this time - and a double sunbed. I usually am not a big fan of swimming pools, but in Gran Velas - you can't miss them, very big, with a part that has slightly warmer water, and right by the sea, just another place to enjoy the sea view.
And the food is just perfect: any restaurant, any time of the day, it comes out delicious, flavorful, fresh and very creative. I absolutely loved my stay and will return to Gran Velas again as son as I can.
The hotel also has kids club, teen club, and courtesy transportation to the 5th avenue in Playa del Carmen, where they drop one off and pick up at any indicated time.
And one more thing that I loved - the abundance of tropical plants, some quite rare. I absolutely recommend Gran Velas to every person, who is looking for a perfect vacation.
One more thing that I almost forgot - bedding and pillows made me think I was falling asleep on a cloud, almost in heaven!

Room Tip: Amabassador hotel, lovely beach front rooms, Zen - wonderful rooms with a view on a small lake, with...
