I am travelling Mexico and was looking at hostels to stay in when I came across "Happy Gecko" on hostelbookers.com.

It was cheap, VERY central, but had a review of 77%.

Ignore that rating. This place is amazing! 2 minutes walk from the beach, shops, bus stations (OK, maybe 5 for the ADO station) with an amazing open set roof bar/communel area. We paid 150 pesos per night and it is one of the best places I had stayed. Monday to Wednesday the bar is quiet (you can drink your own alcohol until 9pm) and from Thursday to Sunday its packed. They have rooms upstairs and down so if noise is an issue, just ask to stay downstairs. Although, I heard no noise at all in my upstairs room, sleeping in amazing air con every night.

Do yourself a favour, and check in here. The lady that owns the place (Amanda - Canadian) is SO helpful with tours and local info too!

Glad I stayed here, would love to come back.

The poor cleaning lady did all the work in the place. Everyone else just lounged around and rarely , if ever got off there lazy buts to help each other or the guests. Furthermore it was 4 times the price it should have been. Also the beds sucked. The water pressure was crap. The internet never worked. The TV didn't work, which is not what you should be doing on vacation but if you are tired or hungover its nice to have a boob tube. It is probably the worst hostel in Playa. The other places we stayed were cheaper or much better. Don't stay there. It sucks.

Room Tip: Don't stay at this hostel.

I arrived late and they were full but that didnt stop them taking me next door and getting me a private double room for 350 peso (£15) for the night.

I had a good nose around Happy Gecko and the rooms were all clean and tidy with good security.

The staff fell over themselves to make sure I was okay as I was tired from a push up from Belize.

This place has a bar on the roof so no sleep before 2am unless you are deaf or dead.

Hugely recommend staying here. 2 mins from beach and a 5 min walk to the ADO Bus station to head to Belize of Cancun.

Super nice people who won a flat 5 review. Well done.

Room Tip: Late check ins not a problem

It was the people that made this hostel good. The owner and bar staff are very friendly and helpful and speak great English. Other than the fun atmosphere at the bar upstairs, the hostel was very basic and unclean. Our rooms were very dimly lit, the floors were dirty, half of the lights were broken, the shower was broken and there was basically no security as the dorm rooms were never locked and any person from the street could enter the hostel whenever they pleased. A pleasant stay but the overall quality could be improved! Thanks to the few helpful staff!

Staff at hostel was excellent very helpful and good at speaking english. The bar on the roof top had daily entertainment with bands and cheap drinks. Marvin and Michelangelo were very help full for traveling through belize. The rooms were fairly big stayed in 8 mixed dorm only four other people during my two night stay. and locks provided at check in for 100 pesos and then returned once lock is. If you dont lock your stuff up its your responsibility for it not to go missing. would recommend staying here

Stayed there for one night between Xmas and NYE! We were super lucky to be able to stay there, because EVERYTHING was booked in Playa del Carmen, and the owner (who speaks perfect English, in case you don't speak Spanish it's perfect) was kind enough to tell us she just had a cancellation and was able to accomodate us! She had only 3 beds in the dorms and we were 4 and she agreed to puta mattress on thefloor so we were super grateful for that. There's hot water and wifi in the hostel (wifi was working soso when we were there). Rooms are clean (way cleaner that another hostel we went to visit, Hostel Che, and Che was charging much more). Location is perfect (5 mins walk from the beach and the main road with shops and restaurants). They have lockers in the room to lock your things.

i heard that happy gecko was the place to be in playa del carmen so i decided to stay for my last night in mexico. boy was i wrong! apparently they just let anyone walk right on into the rooms which ever time of day. there are no locks on the doors and anyone can just walk right in. I had my money, laptop, and my ipod stolen. the staff there were no help at all. apparently they made it seemed like it was my fault even when i was in the room when this happened. I didn't realize that I had to be on the lookout 24/7 for being in my room as well. i may be jumping to conclusions but apparently in the dorm where i was staying, most of them are all staff. and throughout the day i saw that all of their friends (who were not staying at gecko) were over and they partied all night. while i was in my room that night i saw the friends of the staff randomly just walking in and out of the dorm where i was staying. this kind of draws my conclusion of who came in and robbed me because the bar really isn't advertised out to the public except for friends of friends. the only positive feedback i can give is the location. DO NOT STAY!! there are so many other better hostels that are close to the center. it is not worth your time or money to stay here!!
