We were very happy with the Azul Fives and highly recommend it. We travelled as a couple and although there were many families and children at the resort, it was still a nice place for couples if you're looking for a relatively quiet getaway (the bars didn't get too crazy).

The beach is great: very well maintained with a lot of new sand.

The pools are also very nice - the interior pools are much quieter than the main pool, and are nice to escape to when you want to get away from the music and truly relax.

The restaurants were very well designed and the food quality was very good for a resort.
The Italian restaurant was the best a la carte we went to with great service, a nice ambiance, and delicious food.
The Asian restaurant was probably the worst restaurant we went to, both in terms of service and quality of food.

Complaints:
There are very few umbrellas and on busy days it's very tough to find a shady spot on the beach.

The common areas were generally very well maintained, but the room was showing its age after only four years. The furnishings are very modern so the photos on here look very good, but in person the rooms look a little worn out. Everything needed a really good scrub - the floors, walls, and washroom fixtures all seemed a little dirty. With that said, overall the room was still pretty nice, especially the balcony.

The daily cleaning left something to be desired. Our towels were not replaced every day - for example, on the first day of cleaning, our face cloths and floor mat were removed and not replaced for a few days. Similarly, the water bottles weren't always restocked. One day we returned after the unit had been cleaned, and the door had been left unlocked by the cleaner (you had to really yank it hard for it to lock, which he evidently didn't do that day).

Despite these minor issues, we highly recommend it and overall it was everything we could have asked for.

This resort was excellent overall. We were there for a week and had a great time. We had regular rooms which were nice and clean and spacious. We had rooms in villa 8 on the 2nd floor with garden view and these were nice and quiet. The food was very good, especially the buffet. We didn't particularly like the sushi restaurant, though their non-sushi items were good. One thing to keep in mind is if you eat at the restaurants instead of the buffet, the portions are rather small. This is not a problem because you can just order more. The drinks were all good from every bar we tried. I loved the fruit smoothies from the health bar! The beach was amazing and we never had trouble finding chairs in the shade. Sunday it did get more busy and we waited a bit but they found us a good spot with shade. For any tennis players, there is 1 tennis court. However the surface is very strange. It's turf with sand on it, which is pretty slippery and difficult to run on. The ball bounce is also very high. We played for over an hour and somewhat got the hang of it, but I think it would be better without the sand on it... My only complaint is that the room doors shut loudly and it's nearly impossible to close them quietly. You might find this a problem if you want to sleep in or go to bed early. For us it wasn't really an issue though. The staff is also great, very friendly and helpful. We particularly enjoyed talking to Hector, who was very helpful throughout our trip!

We did go away on several day trips, which were great, so we weren't at the resort for the entire time. I do recommend this resort for pretty much anyone. I think it would be good for family, couples, in a group, etc. I can't say I'd go back to it as I like to try new places, but we did have a wonderful time and I highly recommend it!

Room Tip: top floors with garden view are quieter

We have just returned from the Azul Fives after a 2 week stay. The hotel grounds are fantastic, immaculately kept, the pools that sweep through the grounds are immaculate, the staff are extremely friendly always a hola and a smile. We had 1 kingsize bed in our room in villa 5 nearest to the beach, one of the best rooms I have ever stayed in. The buffet was not the greatest I have ever seen only 6 hot dishes but you could always have pizza (freshly made for you) or tortilla (also made fresh for you). All the other restaurants were a la carte, fantastic food in the oriental restaurant, Italian was 8/10. The entertainments team were good fun and didn't bug you to join in all the time, Hector (I'm sexy and I know it) just loves himself more than his own mother, but funny with it. There was only one bar to go to in the evening which was a bit of a disappointment but 10 mins in a taxi took you into the centre of playa del Carmen.

Get up early if you want a double sunbed, there are 8 and are always the first to go, beach is wonderful and the sea is warmer than the pool, one thing I would do next time is to take loads of $1 bills as these were used for tipping, All in all this is a beautiful hotel with fantastic grounds, would return again without doubt.

Room Tip: All the rooms on this resort are fantastic.

For Family, Azul Beach is preferred than Azul Fives, as it is smaller, more personal and food in general is also better in quality and choice. The service in both hotels are truly excellent, and response for faulty TV control and Safety deposit box reset problem were resolved immediately.

Room Tip: This is, relatively a large hotel on a large ground. Breakfast is served in Flavours, located at the front end and the other restaurants for lunch, dinner etc at the opposite end, closer to the beach. If the room is located at one end, it meant walking all the way from one end to the other for either breakfast or lunch/dinner/beach. Buffet breakfast at Azul Beach is more varied and better.

I will try and make this brief and useful as possible.

Myself and my girlfriend went to Azul Fives from 23rd to the 30th January 2014 with Thompson and found the hotel fantastic.

We arrived in the evening to a glass of champagne and a warm flannel to damp our faces after our long 10hour flight which was a nice touch. The hotels appearance on the surface compared to others we saw on the transfer in all admittance was not as grand but it is still beautiful.

The facilities at the hotel are amazing and you have an excellent choice of restaurants and bars throughout the day with the option of a 24hrs all inclusive room service. You also have a mini bar with a selection of drinks which is replenished daily. Our room was a double suite and very sleek and modern and fits the online description perfectly.

The pool areas and the hotel grounds are immaculate and the staff are always cleaning and gardening but are never busy to stop and say hello. The staff personally for me are what made this place so special as they were very welcoming and never expected to be tipped despite doing a great job.

The location of the hotel is right on the beach and the sea is as good as it looks in the pictures, the only down side is that there is no towns within walking distance (unless you walk along the beach for 1:30hrs).

The only down side is that the night entertainment isn't fantastic, I believe this is simply down to the amount of family's and older couples who maybe prefer an early night despite the hotels best efforts to put on bands etc. Saying this the bar is open until late and there is always music playing regardless how busy they are.

Finally I would definitely recommend this hotel to anybody and we learnt if you are contemplating travelling out of peak season, if you book the hotel a week before you are due to go you will be make a real good saving.
