“First Time in Mexico - Best Holiday ever.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 3, 2012

Me and my boyfriend just came back from our first holiday together at Azul Fives hotel in Playa del Carmen in Mexico and it was incredible. Here is a brief overview for people who are torn between the reviews and deciding whether to go to here:

After a very long 10 and half hour flight we were transfered from Cancun airport to Azul Fives hotel that took about 45 minutes. Upon arrival we were greeted with a glass of lovely blue champagne and cool towel whilst we checked in, then we were driven to our hotel room by a bell boy who was more then helpful, carrying our bags and showing us around the hotel. There are 14 different villas all which are very close to a pool and not at all far from the beach.

The Room - We were in the deluxe room which is considered the most basic but if you are like us and just need somewhere to shower, sleep and chill out for a few hours a day this was perfect. The room was contemporary and had a his and hers sink as well as a wet room shower. The only criticism is that all of these rooms come with 2 double beds and we only used one, it would be perfect if there was a king size bed instead if 2 doubles but its only a minor detail and we didn't spend a great deal of time in the room anyway. The hotel offers suites which are the upgrade from what we were in. We had a sneak peak and these are truly lovely but apart from the large bed and a Jacuzzi bath we wouldn't really need any of the other features especially because we were gourmet all inclusive which we would seriously recommend.

Food - There are 4 main restaurants and 3 pool side snack bars.

Flavors - Serves a lovely buffet breakfast with just about everything and omelettes made fresh in front of you with a filling of your choice. Flavors over looks the jungle which if your lucky you can do a spot of monkey watching in the morning whilst you eat. Flavors is also open for dinner, again its a buffet style dinner but has many nice things to tuck into.

Tsuki - Oriental style restaurant which serves sushi as well as chinese starters, mains and pudding. Very nice, puddings and starters especially.

Sea Olive - The food here was good, not as good as the other places in the complex but had some nice dishes, they also do lunch her which is traditional mexican food.

Arezzo - By far the best restaurant in complex, the food is exceptional, we went twice and only stayed for a week. This has to be booked in advance as the others can you can just turn up to but its well worth it.

Swim up bars - they serve snack food to keep you going through out the day, all pretty basic stuff but pretty tasty. The bars also do amazing cocktails, literately anything you want made with branded spirits. If you like to drink this will make your all inclusive worth while.

Facilities - Make the most of the holiday rep, we went with Thomson/First Choice and our rep Lauren was really helpful. She arranged excursions for us and knew so much about everything to do with the hotel and the surrounding area.

The spa was so lovely but a bit disappointing, we went in as a couple to find out that the male and female spa relaxation areas were separate so we decided against it in the end, this may be common however not what we were looking for. There was a daily spa charge of £25 a day for the relaxation areas as well as a charge for the amount of minutes each of the massages took.

The hotel also has a small shop, a gym, smoothie bar and painting stall.

The staff - All of the staff here are super friendly, everyone says hello even if its just in passing. The waiters are constantly topping up your drinks and obviously tipping will get you a better service however even if you didn't everyone would still be great. The tips are very valued by the staff, even if its as little as 20 pesos.

Entertainment
Day - There is an activity program which is centred around the infinity pool but doesn't ruin the atmosphere if you just want to go there to chill out.

Evening- the zky bar is the only form of entertainment the hotel offers at night, the shows we saw were family friendly but entertaining for people of all ages however going to the same place each night can become a bit repetitive so we would strongly recommend an excursion to playa del carmen, Coco Bongo's club was incredible. 4 hour long show with no intervals and constant drinks for vip guests (£70 each) a truly superb night worth every penny.

Beach - The beach is nice with white sands and a short walk down you can enter the sea for a swim, there are rocks at the entrance to the sea directly opposite the hotel but its not a massive deal. The beach has many companies offering jet skis, diving gear and massages too.

To sum it up if you want a relaxing holiday with a great range of drinks, lovely food and light entertainment with days spent in the sun by the pool this is the hotel for you. We went for the last week in May which we were told was only 40 per cent occupancy and we found this perfect. Ideal for couples, not recommended for people looking to stay up late drinking every night or families that need lots to keep their children entertained. We thought it was amazing and just what we needed. Thank you to all the staff for making it exceptional for us.

Room Tip: Villa 6 is located next to the childrens activity centre Higher rooms are better as you get a balco...

Dear Valued Guest,

As General Manager of the Azul Fives Hotel, I would like to thank you for your detailed review and I’m very happy to hear that you had the best holiday ever! Your comments have been shared with our staff and they asked for a ‘thank you’ to be linked with mine.

The relaxation and pampering starts as soon as you arrive at the hotel with our personalized champagne check-in. We understand your comments, unfortunately at present, we do only have double beds in our deluxe rooms. However, we do have future plans to change this.

We’re glad that you enjoyed your dining experience in our Gourmet restaurants. Flavours, with its unique surroundings is definitely a favorite with our guests and the family of monkeys are always showing off in front of our guests! Arrezo, another guest favorite for dinner, is where you can soak up the beach ambience whilst enjoying homemade pastas accompanied by the perfect wine, selected especially for you by our sommelier.

Also, I’m happy that you enjoyed our swim up bars and the array of cocktails we have – small tip for any travelers. Try our specialty, “the Riviera Maya”.

At the Azul Fives Hotel, we have the Vassa spa. To use the hydrotherapy and relaxation areas there is a surcharge, however, when you purchase one of our treatments, these areas are including in the price. Also, we have exclusive promotions, so it is worth asking what the special of the day is!

Again, I’d like to thank you for sharing your experiences of your time spent at the Azul Fives Hotel and we all look forward to your next holiday at the with us.

Came here with work for 5 nights!
Best hotel Ive ever stayed in.
Modern and contemporay designs throughout. Infinity pool situated right on the beach with a swim up bar which was so chilled and relaxing!
Food, Even if you are fussy, ask the staff in the restaurant to make you something else, nothing is ever too much hassle for you! (The best chocolate fondants ive ever had were at the Italian)
Only restaurant you have to book is the Italian due to its popularity but well worth the visit.
Stayed in a 1 bedroom suite, which consisted of king sized bed, jacuzzi bath, 2 toilets, TV, Dvd player, Full kitchen with microwave over, dining area and lounge area... beautiful.
24 hour room service included in the price if your all inclusive, again nothing too much trouble.
Wifi for a week is $50 USD. Very good connections aswell!
Rooms were always spotlessly clean! Staff couldnt do enough for you,, your wish is their command!
Karisma KNOW how to make a hotel.
Last note, You are only a 10 minute drive from playa del carmen for shopping on 5th avenue or a night out down in Coco Bongos!!

Room Tip: Book here immediately.

We also had read many reviews and were pleasently suprised.
We were aware of only having Queen size beds in the studios so we weren't disappointed. As many reviews stated the bathroom was a little dark but very clean with an excellent shower (no hot water issues).
Staff and service was very good. All sincerely proud of their country and thankfed us many times for visiting. Thanks to DelliBeth and Manuela.
Great food choices at all a la carte restaurants (Lasagna at the Italian) with buffets more than adequate.
Definetly will visit again.

Room Tip: Ground floor probably the best choice especially with children.

"In short"
We were booked for 2 couples and 2 suites at Azul Sensatori 6 months prior to trip; upon arrival at sister hotel Sensatori, we were told they overbooked and we were being rerouted to Azul Fives. Azul Fives does not have suites but we were charged the same price and promised upgrades to suites (we did not ever receive a suite and gave up after the 3 day at the front desk).

Few other reasons would not recommend this hotel "resort" -
- Food was average in comparison to other Playa resorts, we've stayed at nearly all the Dreams Resorts and few others between Puerto Aventuras, Playa and Cancun area
- Infinity on beach was primary gathering spot; they did some activities but all were catered toward family/small children; ditto with evening activities
- #1 reason would not recommend this resort - the staff in the reception/check out area was misleading, difficult to deal with when we were moved to the hotel, we were promised suites and they did not follow through on the written document provided to us by Azul Sensatori's management; we were not the only travelers moved, I can't even tell you how many people were displeased with service at the front desk/reception area; overall it was a bad experience and we will never return.

Room Tip: Don't stay at this hotel; if you're stuck there, upgrade to a Pent House Suite

Dear Valued Guest,

May I thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review. Please accept my sincerest apologies for any disappointment caused from your recent stay.

Your comments regarding the front desk were very concerning. We urge you to contact us directly at customerservices@karismamexico.com so that we can discuss your experience in further detail, as we cannot pull up your information from TripAdvisor.

Further, please know that our Executive Chef is currently reviewing our restaurant menus, so I am sure the next time you stay with us, you will feel that it warrants our five star status. I only stayed at this property for 2 days but experienced it enough to say I likely would not go back.

The grounds were beautiful, everything was very well kept and clean.
The resort is a fare distance from the beach, but there are shuttles that you'll see occassionally and can jump on if you want, but the walk isn't that far (7 minutes from the front of the property to the beach).

The most disappointing was definitely the beach. It's unswimmable and I would not recommend beach lovers like myself to stay here.
The room was beautiful - full kitchen, dining and living area separated by sliding doors to the huge bathroom/bedroom/Jacuzzi tub area. very clean, and never had a problem with there not being enough hot water as some have mentioned about.
The first day, I stayed at the Lizards Pool but the water was so warm it wasn't refreshing at all.
Apparently the next day it was much cooler, but I opted to stay at the infinity pool by the beach which was a perfect temperature.
I was disappointed that the beach was so rocky/shell-y/coral-y as I'd rather swim in the ocean than at a pool when I'm away, since you can swim in a pool in North American any ol' day, but rarely get the chance to swim in beautiful turquoise water.
The kids club here seemed to be amazing, but are also offered at the other Azul and El Dorado properties, and as i said earlier, I'd recommend those properties before this one, unless you could get this property on a sell off.
The food was great and we did not experience delays or waiting, but we were a group of 14 and everything had been pre-booked/arranged for us.

I did get to experience the spa and it was WELL worth the money.
They had a special promotion - 2 hours of pampering - a full body scrub, wrap, massage and facial - all for $125USD! It was amazing!!

All in all the resort is lovely and I have no complaints other than the beach which was quite disappointing.
