Me and my boyfriend just came back from our first holiday together at Azul Fives hotel in Playa del Carmen in Mexico and it was incredible. Here is a brief overview for people who are torn between the reviews and deciding whether to go to here:
After a very long 10 and half hour flight we were transfered from Cancun airport to Azul Fives hotel that took about 45 minutes. Upon arrival we were greeted with a glass of lovely blue champagne and cool towel whilst we checked in, then we were driven to our hotel room by a bell boy who was more then helpful, carrying our bags and showing us around the hotel. There are 14 different villas all which are very close to a pool and not at all far from the beach.
The Room - We were in the deluxe room which is considered the most basic but if you are like us and just need somewhere to shower, sleep and chill out for a few hours a day this was perfect. The room was contemporary and had a his and hers sink as well as a wet room shower. The only criticism is that all of these rooms come with 2 double beds and we only used one, it would be perfect if there was a king size bed instead if 2 doubles but its only a minor detail and we didn't spend a great deal of time in the room anyway. The hotel offers suites which are the upgrade from what we were in. We had a sneak peak and these are truly lovely but apart from the large bed and a Jacuzzi bath we wouldn't really need any of the other features especially because we were gourmet all inclusive which we would seriously recommend.
Food - There are 4 main restaurants and 3 pool side snack bars.
Flavors - Serves a lovely buffet breakfast with just about everything and omelettes made fresh in front of you with a filling of your choice. Flavors over looks the jungle which if your lucky you can do a spot of monkey watching in the morning whilst you eat. Flavors is also open for dinner, again its a buffet style dinner but has many nice things to tuck into.
Tsuki - Oriental style restaurant which serves sushi as well as chinese starters, mains and pudding. Very nice, puddings and starters especially.
Sea Olive - The food here was good, not as good as the other places in the complex but had some nice dishes, they also do lunch her which is traditional mexican food.
Arezzo - By far the best restaurant in complex, the food is exceptional, we went twice and only stayed for a week. This has to be booked in advance as the others can you can just turn up to but its well worth it.
Swim up bars - they serve snack food to keep you going through out the day, all pretty basic stuff but pretty tasty. The bars also do amazing cocktails, literately anything you want made with branded spirits. If you like to drink this will make your all inclusive worth while.
Facilities - Make the most of the holiday rep, we went with Thomson/First Choice and our rep Lauren was really helpful. She arranged excursions for us and knew so much about everything to do with the hotel and the surrounding area.
The spa was so lovely but a bit disappointing, we went in as a couple to find out that the male and female spa relaxation areas were separate so we decided against it in the end, this may be common however not what we were looking for. There was a daily spa charge of £25 a day for the relaxation areas as well as a charge for the amount of minutes each of the massages took.
The hotel also has a small shop, a gym, smoothie bar and painting stall.
The staff - All of the staff here are super friendly, everyone says hello even if its just in passing. The waiters are constantly topping up your drinks and obviously tipping will get you a better service however even if you didn't everyone would still be great. The tips are very valued by the staff, even if its as little as 20 pesos.
Day - There is an activity program which is centred around the infinity pool but doesn't ruin the atmosphere if you just want to go there to chill out.
Evening- the zky bar is the only form of entertainment the hotel offers at night, the shows we saw were family friendly but entertaining for people of all ages however going to the same place each night can become a bit repetitive so we would strongly recommend an excursion to playa del carmen, Coco Bongo's club was incredible. 4 hour long show with no intervals and constant drinks for vip guests (£70 each) a truly superb night worth every penny.
Beach - The beach is nice with white sands and a short walk down you can enter the sea for a swim, there are rocks at the entrance to the sea directly opposite the hotel but its not a massive deal. The beach has many companies offering jet skis, diving gear and massages too.
To sum it up if you want a relaxing holiday with a great range of drinks, lovely food and light entertainment with days spent in the sun by the pool this is the hotel for you. We went for the last week in May which we were told was only 40 per cent occupancy and we found this perfect. Ideal for couples, not recommended for people looking to stay up late drinking every night or families that need lots to keep their children entertained. We thought it was amazing and just what we needed. Thank you to all the staff for making it exceptional for us.
