This is not the place for the average tourist. If you like typical American fare this is just not for you. If you like great steaks, taco's and other Mexican fair this is the place for you. Delicious and affordable. No hablo Espanole they will TRY to help you to the best of their ability and they are pretty dam good. If you're a little adventurous and want to eat like a local this is your place. Cheers, Ed

The last thing we were expecting to do on our Mayan trek across the Yucatan was to eat at a steakhouse. In our ignorance, we figured that was pretty much an American thing. Then we heard about HC de Monterrey and decided to eat there for lunch on our way to Aktun Chen. We weren't disappointed at all. In fact, it was nice to eat in a place where all the other customers were locals rather than tourists.
Our waiter was very friendly and really liked to chat with us. Since his English was spotty, we had a lot of fun trying to match his English with our superficial knowledge of Spanish. I know some tourists get upset about things like that but what for? It is their country, so I'm ok with it if they speak their own language. It's part of the fun for me. And they do provide an English menu, if that helps.
The food is great (get the quacamole!) and portions are more than adequate. We got one dish with the guacamole appetizer and were almost too full to walk out of the place. If you're either in or passing through Playa del Carmen stop in to HC de Monterrey.

After reading good reviews, we decided to have dinner at HC de Monterrey. This is an open air restaurant like most of the restaurants in Playa del Carmen. We ordered steaks that were extremely tender and flavorful! The margaritas were the best we have had, which they use fresh squeezed lime. The service was outstanding and the price was very inexpensive. It was so good that we went back again. We will definitely eat here again the next time we are in PDC.

We had arrived in Cancun in the afternoon and stopped at Playa del Carmen on our way to Akumal to food shop and have some dinner. HC de Monterey was right across the street from the Mega supermarket so we thought we'd give it a try. We weren't disappointed. The service was fast and the food was very tasty. This is primarily a grilled steak place, so if you're vegetarian (as are my daughter and son-in-law) be prepared for a meal of guacamole, chips and cheese fondue. And, speaking of guacamole, it was excellent - better than the "famous" guacamole that we'd read about in Akumal. It was fresh, with a slightly chunky texture (a personal preference), plenty of tomatoes, onions, and just the right amount of cilantro. One order is probably sufficient for two people. My wife ordered the special flank steak which came with generous portions of grilled onions and habanero peppers that were't too, too hot. I had the equivalent of street t
