“Great food off 5th Ave.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2010

We read all the reviews on TripAdvisor so we had to try this place. It was very good! The first time we ate here it was for dinner and we started with the 'homemade chips and salsas' which is the 5-salsa sampler everyone raves about. It was great! But my favorites by far were the pumpkin and the pico de giallo...the others are pretty hot. They will keep refilling all of this for you until you can't eat any more! So we just sat there, drank beer, at chips, and watched people walk along the main drag. Then we ended up just splitting the Rigeo Tacos El Pastor and being full.

Two days later we went here for lunch. I got the tortilla soup, which was good but caused a little hearburn later, and I also had two single taco el pastors with cilantro and pineapple...fantastic! And so cheap! My husband got the steak tacos which looked great.

Anna, of course, is the highlight of this place along with the rest of the servers. They are all so nice and fun to talk to. We felt bad for people who didn't walk into Carboncitas and try the food! Very fun place.

“THE Place NOT to Miss”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 5, 2010

On 4th just a few steps off of 5th Avenue this place is the gem of Playa for Tacos al Pastor, fantastic salsas, cold cold beer, great people watching and wonderful service from Anna. A bit more that a "street taco" experience but absolutely fantastic. This place is a not to miss experience.

“Strong Contender as our Favourite Restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2010

We ate here last night after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor, and need I say, we were not disappointed.

Starting out with the appetizer menu, we selected the 5 Home-made Salsas with Chips, and a bowl of Posole Rojo. The chips were freshly fried, crisp and warm. But the salsas really stole the show. There was a fresh pico de gallo with just the right balance of onion, cilantro, and tomato; a fiery chipotle with a smooth consistency; garlic snd chile; creamy, cool cilantro (great between bites of the hot stuff); and the best for last: a pumpkin seed salsa that had so much flavour, I could have made an entire meal of it with fresh tortillas. Posole (an absolute must-be-tried local dish) was full-flavoured, spicy without ruining your tastebuds, and chock-full of hominy and shredded pork. We were practically full before our main course hit the table.

For dinner, we had Chipotle Styled Shrimp, which came in a delicious creamy, smoky sauce. The waiter warned me that it might be hot, but I found it delightfully medium-ish, not so hot that you were uncomfortable, but enough spice to remind you what you were eating. Sauteed mushrooms came on the side, and wrapped up in a warm, fresh tortilla, I could have died a happy woman. My husband had a combo taco dish that included arrecheta (skirt steak), poblano, and onion. The preparation was cut into nice, small pieces, perfect for piling onto tortillas. The steak was char-broiled and bursting with flavour. Yum.

After our meal, the waiter cleared our plates promptly, and then presented us with a lovely dessert: a small scoop of ice cream served in a crispy tortilla shell flavoured with cinnamon and sprinkled with sugar, and drizzled with Kaluha. Amazing stuff.

It's clean, the staff are friendly, but not over-bearing, atmosphere is typical of budget restaurants around here: colourful, interesting, basic. Total meal came to about 35.00 USD, including drinks, and generous tip.
