“Fantastic service, food and atmosphere!”
Reviewed June 30, 2014

On vacation in a resort, we decided to venture out As food snobs, we were tired of the mediocre food at the resort. We walked 5th avenue and saw the glass bar. Nice open restaurant right on the corner. Looked good, we thought. Boy were we wrong! The place wasn't good, it was INCREDIBLE. from the moment we sat down, to the time our bill was brought, we were highly impressed. The salmon croquette, aged cheese plate, "cowboy" ribeye, pastas, and desserts were TOP NOTCH! This is a place I would not only recommend, but no doubt would visit again. For the quality of service and the amount and taste of the food, the price was perfect! It was the highlight of our food intake the whole week in playa! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to be pampered!

“Returned 3 Times in 10 Days”
Reviewed June 17, 2014

The Glass Bar is an excellent restaurant in Playa! The servers are very attentive and immediately make you feel welcome! My favorite Strawberry Martini is the best anywhere and my husband loves the extensive wine selection. From ordering salads and fish to pastas and steaks we have never been disappointed. The restaurant has a great vibe and on a popular corner. It's busy even in slow season but service does not lack! David is one special waiter and remembers year to year when we visit our favorite drinks. We always celebrate special occassions here and look forward to return trips!

“Overpriced, overserviced.”
Reviewed May 31, 2014

They're trying so hard, and there's so much promise, but this place was a let down.

We were met with an pinot grigio aperitif, breads, oil and balsamic. The stand to hang my handbag on was a nice touch. Then the service became painfully attentive.

My starter (scallops with prosciutto and lentil cream) was a let down. The scallops were over-cooked so rubbery. The prosciutto was raw, fatty and tasteless. The lentil cream was grainy and bland. They came with the cocktail sticks still holding them together. My partner's tartar duo was a dish of two halves... the tuna and avocado was fresh, creamy and full of sea flavour. The mahi mahi might as well not have bothered.

The pasta (in the spaghetti with clams and mussels) was cooked perfectly. The mussels were moist and juicy. The clams were over cooked to the point of rubbery and so over salted they ruined the dish. The grouper (red mullet) was painfully overcooked it had attached itself to its rubbery skin. The two were impossible to divorce. The asparagus cream was stunning, vibrant, yet tasted of nothing.

The staff tried so hard, painfully hard, to the point of too hard. They're there... always, at every second. You don't get a moment to enjoy the food, the atmosphere or the ambience. They mean well, but with a restaurant that's clearly aiming to deliver something different to Playa del Carmen, they're going to need a little more guidance in how to make customers feel at ease.

Food's alright. Wine list (Italian) is decent but not diverse. Staff have enormous potential. Could be a great place, but for now just OK and a little pricey for what you get.

This is an honest review, hope it's helpful.

“Amazing Meal ...”
Reviewed May 8, 2014

Great location, walkable from Maya Villa. We arrived without a reservation and they were busy (good sign). They sat us and served us a welcome drink (a rose) so delicious we ordered a whole bottle. Soon a after an amuse-bouche arrived - very classy touch. We were a party of 4 - I had the seafood salad - was so good and fresh, and my entree - the Veal Osso Buco - tender, perfectly seasoned served with polenta - OMG was to die for ... my friends were very satisfied with their meal - and YES we had dessert - my sorbet and limoncello was delicious. Overall this was a very enjoyable meal - the host (I am guessing is super nice). Highly recommend this restaurant - great experience and service!
