My half Italian husband always looks forward to visiting Playa del Carmen's restaurants, since most seem to be real Italian (not the Americanized spaghetti & meatball kind.) Homemade pasta on Il Baretto's menu tempted us to eat here. With its little wooden tables and checkered table clothes the restaurant was inviting, and we like looking at people passing by.
But the friendly ambiance, and good service could not make up for the disappointing food. Though my pizza Margarita had a crisp thin crust, it was topped with shredded mozzarella (not fresh), a marinara sauce that tasted like straight from a glass, and I could count the basil leaves on three fingers.
And my husband's supposedly homemade gnocchi? Their uniform shape and hard consistency proved that they were definitely NOT homemade.
