Hotel Hacienda Merida
Ranked #10 of 105 Hotels in Merida
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 29, 2011

Location
Hotel Hacienda Merida is right in the middle of the beautiful town of Merida. The airport is only 10 minutes away and you can easily walk around the town centre from the hotel. We opted for airport transfer arranged by the hotel as we had a late arriving flight, this cost 400 pesos - while expensive, it gave us a hassle free experience after a long flight from London. Another time, I'd be happy to take a local taxi, which would be less than 100 pesos.

Room
We had a lovely standard room on the lower ground floor at the back of the courtyard. As they only have 8 rooms (a mix of 1st floor and ground floor) they are very quiet. Spotlessly clean with large shower & four poster kingsize bed. Very comfortable & daily maid service had great attention to detail.

Restaurants & Bars
No restuarant but a fantastic breakfast with a choice of continental or Mexican is served on the patio near the pool for a small daily charge. The service couldn't be faulted, after the first day the staff remembered what our likes & dislikes were & it felt like we were guests in a private home. For dinner, there are plentiful options within walking distance, from the cafes & bars to local & tourist restaurants. We felt very safe walking around the town at night, even though there were few European/US tourists. Locals went out of their way to talk to us (without the usual sales pitch you get in European cities!) & were always helpful if you looked lost.

Facilities & Staff
From the desk staff to maids, it felt like a small team that really cared. We took a few trip arranged by the front desk, visiting Chichen Itza & Uxmal - both easy day trips where you get picked up & returned to the hotel lobby. The front desk is staffed 24 hours & there is a small bar to get cold drinks & tea/coffee when you want.

Value of money
We booked a standard room 129$ + tax a night directly with the hotel, while this is expensive for local standard, we thought it to be great value for the personal service & boutique service we received.

Summary
Conde Nast was right when they rated this little gem on their Hot Boutique hotel list. Truly personal service in a fantastic Mexican town - go now before every one does!

Unfortunately due to our tight schedule we have spent only one night in this AMAZING hacienda. We booked last minute & got a very good rate for the suite in VIP section which was beautifully designed & the service was outstanding.
Everything was just perfect! Thank you!

Our dream vacation was to stay in a Mexican hacienda, my wife and I. But to our great disappointment, the prices varied from 200 to 400$ US. And not only that, but also, all of the haciendas are located hours away from the center of the city. So imagine our surprise when we found the hotel Hacienda Merida.
It’s a hacienda, in the middle of the center of Merida.
We were supposed to stay 3 days ….but we stayed 2 more nights. Gorgeous hotel in an incredible colonial home, outstanding bedrooms, great service with very helpful staff.
They made our stay in Merida one of the best vacations we have spent until now.

I enjoyed our stay here. The courtyard and pool area was very nice and the rooms were comfortable. It's on the pricey side compared to other hotels in the area but the helpful staff and nice atmosphere made up for it.

We stayed at the Hotel Hacienda Merida for one night in December 2010 with our two children, ages 6 and 9. It was a quick stopover for us on the way to Hacienda San Jose in the countryside outside of Merida (just an amazing place - see separate review), as our flight got in late at night and we didn't want a long drive. We didn't really stay long enough to truly get to know the property or staff, but thoroughly enjoyed our morning there and would happily stay there again if we return to Merida.

The hotel is small and lovely. The heart of the hotel is the swimming pool in the center, alongside which there is a lush little garden and places to eat breakfast or read a book. Good design, stylish, authentic. Charming atmosphere.

The staff was very friendly and had our rooms set up with an extra bed as I had requested. We stayed in two lower floor, adjacent rooms at the back of the hotel. These rooms are the "worst" (and cheapest) of the lot, I think, but still very nice and were fine for us as we were just coming in and out. The four rooms at the far back of the hotel felt very dark to me, in contrast to the sun-filled, airy ones overlooking the pool. Our kids loved the rainshower in the spacious bathroom.

I have mixed feelings about bringing young children here, even our well-traveled, relatively-well-behaved ones. The hotel is small and noise echoes off the stone and tile. The pool is intimate; not an appropriate place for child-style splashing and playing. The staff were nice with our kids and made us feel very welcome, but I think it is really only right for super-kids who behave like little grownups. Or a very off-season visit. That being said, I would definitely love a stay here with my husband without the little ones; the hotel is centrally located, an easy walk to the historic district, and just seemed like a fun place.

Oh, I should add that we couldn't get (the free) wifi in our room, but had great reception by the pool. The rooms closer to the pool would likely have great connections.

We had a wonderful stay at Hotel Hacienda! The service was great; we really liked everyone we dealt with at the hotel. I had contacted the hotel ahead of time, and they helped us set up a private tour, which went great. The hotel itself looks just like the photos-very nice, modern, and tranquil in the middle of a bustling city. We loved Merida, and you are close to the square where there is a lot going on.

We did have a couple issues with the hotel. We were in the back area of the hotel, and the first night we came home there was absolutely no light to our room, and we had to use our phones to go up a flight of stairs, and get the key in the lock. The next night, the two guys who work (who me and my husband loved, they were so nice and helpful) tried their best to light up the back area and stairwell, and it was a bit better. Our room itself had a few too many holes to the outside for me. The screen to the window in our room had a long cut in it. Under our window in our bathroom, there was a big hole open to the outside. Our shower area's fixtures seemed a bit "lose" and not too secured to the wall. Our shower also didn't drain very well. The only other issues we had, which I'm not sure the hotel could've done much. I went to use the iron, and when I was filling it with water, realized there was a live cockroach in the iron. I know in this climate it is hard to keep things like this away. The morning we were leaving, there was a half-eaten bat on the ground.

The hotel was quiet, and we rarely saw others who were staying there. The breakfasts were very good, and overall our stay was good.

The reviews of this hotel are consistently good and actually visiting it doesn't disappoint in any way. It is only 5 blocks from the main square but it feels as if you are in the country. It is elegant and understated in a very up-market way and it is breathtaking to walk off the street into the lovely courtyard with swimmingpool. If it is possible to criticise in any way it would be to say that the rooms are dark, but this is often the way in older properties of this type in our experience.

The staff are friendly and efficient and nothing is too much trouble. There is no restaurant but breakfast is served in the courtyard and you are within a short walk of many restaurants in the centre. We had no problem with internet connection either.
