Interested in learning what life on a hacienda was like? Then you must visit Hacienda Sotuta de Peon located about an hour and a half drive from Telchac Puerto, just south of Merida.

Your tour begins with a visit to the beautifully restored hacienda. Next you will visit the henequen processing plant and see the process of turning henequen into rope from beginning to final product.

The next phase of the tour finds you on a “truck”, a large cart, being pulled along narrow gage tracks by a donkey. You travel past the newly completed hotel buildings and henequen fields until you reach your first stop, an authentic Mayan house, where Don Antonio talks to visitors about Mayan customs and traditions as well as life on the hacienda.

Next stop is the beautiful Dzul-Ha cenote. You can purchase a cool drink before entering the underground cave. The large, crystal clear cenote is one of the most beautiful we’ve seen. There are change facilities, goggles and life jackets available so come prepared for a swim!

Finally, it’s back to the main grounds where you will be dropped off at the on-site restaurant where we enjoyed a tasty Yucatecan meal.

This is a wonderful tour. The guides are excellent and knowledgeable, the grounds well kept and the ambience perfect!

A very well done tour of an immaculately maintained hacienda. The tour guides relay an in depth history that covers Mexico from the mid 1980s to the early twentieth century. Traditional sisal production still go on as this is a working plantation although most sisal production has moved to Brazil. A delicious 4 course lunch is also served. One of the best tours I have taken in the world similar in quality to the Hermitage in Nashville or jack Daniels distillery.

This Hacienda is a lesson in history. They show you everything so you get an immersion in the history of the Hacienda era and the cultivation of sisal. Included is a tour of the plantation on their old narrow gauge rail and a lovely swim In a gorgeous underground cenote. A Mayan man talked to our group in Mayan about his time working on that hacienda. Really incredible. I was surprised to learn that when the Mayans revolted and went away from the Haciendas, that Koreans came to work around 1910. Very similar timing of Koreans migrating to work on Hawaiian sugar cane plantations. Koreans remain in the Merida area today.

On the advice of our host at Hotel Medio Mundo we drove out to this Hacienda. The direction signs are a little spotty. Clear for miles and then they disappear leaving you a little unsure. Have faith and you will get there. It is well worth it. It is the only hacienda that we have visited so comparisons are impossible. However I doubt any are better. This is a working farm and the 2 hour tour is excellent. We now have a greater appreciation of the processes involved. The visit with the old hacienda worker is well worth the price of admission. There is also a cenote to cool of in and a restaurant for lunch.

We were able to sign up for this tour online at www.haciendatour.com. It was very easy and a van picked us up at 8:45 at the tourist office across from the main plaza as our hotel was close to that location. The ride out to the hacienda was about 45-50 min. We had a great guide, Juan, who conducted our tour in english. Another group of French tourists had a guide who spoke french. The hacienda is beautifully restored and the tour and demonstration of the process of using hennequen to produce sisal fibers was amazing. It was fascinating to take a step back in time and learn about all the different steps in the process which actually today produces a small amount of sisal. A highlight for us was getting to meet Antonio, an 82 year old little Mayan man who actually worked there at age 15 with his father. He only spoke mayan and through our guide and interpreter told us some stories of everyday life from the past. After the tour they took us on a donkey drawn cart to a cenote for a swim (we just watched the swimmers) and then on to a lovely lunch. We were delivered back to our hotel about 3pm I think. I would highly recommend this authentic tour to anyone--very educational, interesting and fun! The cost was 700 pesos and we were able to pay when we got there using credit card.
