“Great stay in beautiful city”
Reviewed March 6, 2013

This was a first trip to Mexico for my husband and I, and although I did a lot of research there's no making up for being a neophyte and non-Spanish speaker. Cascadas was a perfect choice for us, it's comfortable without being pretentious, centrally located but not overly so because Merida is a busy city. It's a small B & B, just a few rooms, so you have an opportunity to get to know other guests. Breakfasts are wonderful, and enough to keep you going until dinner. We enjoyed talking with other visitors and our hosts, Ellyne & Chucho (a nickname, not sure of spelling). For us, they were the best part of our stay, enriching our appreciation of Merida far beyond what we would have picked up on our own during our short stay.

This is going to be a tough review to complete. I want to be honest and yet, I have a desire to be objective as well...so...bear with me.

Such a gorgeous oasis. As soon as we stepped up into the pool and casita area, it was like..Oh My God....truly. It was. See the pictures.

The breakfast... wonderful and always with lots of great fruits and yogurts and buns or pastries all followed by a different hot dish, each day. Eggs one day, crepes another...a different egg dish. Yummers, all the way.

And here is the more difficult bit...Ellen, the hostess...hasn't quite left her New York approach to things, behind. Always wanting to be helpful, she would become somewhat overly informative and had a difficult time disengaging and allowing her visitors an opportunity to talk amongst themselves. I also found the 'rules' to be a problem. No sweets in the rooms...what adult doesn't maybe want a stash of sweets, for night time munching? And the 'rule' about shoes in the main room...and in truth, I understand the concern...dirty feet in the commercial kitchen area...then the kitchen should be isolated in some way. But...I disliked the 'rule' lecture and I disliked being unable to have a conversation with being interrupted by Ellen.

I know she means well...but...she should leave her New York habits, IN New York...and embrace Mexican life styles. I think, anyway.

Room Tip: Theer are only four casitas and they are well positioned.

After reading the other reviews we chose Cacadas for our vacation to Merida. It was even better than we had hoped. Comfortable beds kept spotlessly clean. The decor with Myan
accents is beautiful, waterfalls in the shower and poolside are soothing. Each morning you start with the best breakfast ever! Fresh fruit platters, egg dishes and my
personal favorite mango yougurt and grannola. We gave Ellyne our list of places we wanted to
see and she arranged our tours which picked us up and dropped us off at the B&B,
reasonably priced and really enjoyable tours (unlike some we have taken in Europe
that run you around like cattle). We had front row seats for a prarade, we were there
in Feb. during Carnival. And Cascadas is located just a short walk from the Center of town
where you can see the oldest church in the americas and other historical sights, resturants
and shopping. An even shorter walk (2 blocks) is Santiago Church, with a little park and
a market with good food and free wi-fi in the park. So on my Vacation I got to swim in a cenote
climb to the top of a myan pyramid at Uxmal. I took my afternoon siesta by the pool
listening to the waterfalls as i relaxed in a hammock under palm trees. Yep I will be back!

This small hotel is a gem! There are only 4 rooms, and the guests
receive personal attention from the charming hosts. The rooms are
located on the 4 corners of a peaceful and relaxing patio area with
waterfalls, hammocks, chairs and a refreshing pool. The rooms are
decorated tastefully, and the showers have glass walls that look out
to a waterfal and a rock wall with Mayan statues. The breakfast,
included in the room rate, is delicious and generous, and can fortify
you for your morning activities.
Cascadas is located near many restaurants and activities which can be
reached by walking about 10 minutes or taking a cab for about 20
pesos.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and recommend Cascadas highly!

We recently spent two nights at this B&B at the beginning of a week-long trip through Yucatan, and we could not have been happier. I would echo everything that other reviewers have said. Our room was very classy and comfortable, with a nice, firm bed; a glass shower with a waterfall outside; and a peaceful courtyard with a pool right outside the door. The breakfasts were the best we had on our entire trip (come hungry, and don't worry about lunch because you won't need it). There is also a fridge stocked with beer, wine and cold non-alcoholic drinks, to which guests can help themselves (as if you were staying with family or friends).

As for the proprietors, not only was Ellyn a wealth of information, she was also one of the warmest and most hospitable people we met on our trip -- and we met lots of great people. She and her husband, Chucho, are a binational couple with deep roots in the region, and they are plainly dedicated to giving every visitor a pleasant, comfortable experience (including being up at 5 a.m. to make sure you make your flight home ... which is likely to be at the crack of dawn if you flew United Airlines from somewhere in the U.S. or Canada). One of the nicest experiences I had on the entire trip was sitting in the courtyard before dinner on our second night and chatting with Ellyn about Merida and their life there over a glass of wine. That being said, I also got the sense that if we had just wanted to be left alone, that would have been fine too.

So I would highly recommend this B&B to anyone visiting Merida. We plan to come back. Of course, small B&Bs like this are not for everyone. No matter how professional the innkeeper, the experience is inevitably more intimate than staying at a large hotel. However, the level of service here actually compared quite favorably to that which we have received at many, many other places where we paid quite a bit more money to stay.

Final note: my husband and I are a same-sex married couple, and were absolutely welcome here. (Shouldn't be an issue, but still is at some other places.) Cascadas is a great option for any LGBT family traveling to Merida.

This B&B is fantastic. on avery quiet street. The four rooms are good size and surround a beautiful pool w "water falls". Spotless, and kind staff. The owners went over the top to help us w/ information, recommendations, bookig tours, and fresh juice on your return from the day un the afternoons. Ellen is A wealth of information and can help you w/everything you need. The breakfast was abundant, fresh, yummy, and easy. Different omletes @ day, fresh fruit, bread, tortillas, salsa oh & yogurt. amazing ESP compared to what others have told us about very basic breakfast they get. 15 min walk to Plaza Grande, another 5 to the big authentic market, minutes from small park with simple restos. Lovely community feel on night w/ activities like oldies Mexican w/ seniors dancing in the moon light. A+ for the showers. a definite find!
queer friendly

Room Tip: all rooms are equal. quiet only 4 rooms.

Our first visit to Merida, our first visit to the Yucatan, was made more wonderful than we had dreamed because we fortunately chose Cascadas de Merida. From the time you first walk in and meet the owners Ellyne and Chucho and are shown through the sitting and dining rooms to the courtyard with the pool, waterfalls and the casitas you feel immediately you are in a special place with special people to make your stay a wonderous one.It was a wonderful marriage of tradtional and innovative style. The casitas were bright, clean and comfortable with king size bed,air-conditioning,TV and ever available bottled water. The glass walled shower with the rock wall and waterfall on the outside was enchanting. The host and hostess were full of information, suggestions and assistance in setting up transportation and tours.Breakfasts were feasts and always delicious. There were afternoon snacks if you happened not to be out doing one of so many things to do.And it was a pleasure to have met the other people involved in Cascadas, especially Miguel and Aurora.
We went many places, did many things, met many people but it was always pleasant reentering our home away from home.We feel attached to Ellyne and Chucho and Cascadas and will try to stay in touch and hope to visit again.
