If you speak English and are a little overwhelmed by all the Spanish they speak in Merida (the nerve! :-), then this is a great place to go meet people who speak English. The library lends books to members (and its pretty inexpensive to become one...), but even if you aren't a member, you can go there and enjoy the lovely shaded back patio and read a book or visit with friends there. There are computers available, bulletin boards with resources, and just friendly people. Also, they have events that are worth going to as well.

I spent many happy hours reading books and chatting with the very interesting staff. I have very fond memories and hold a special place in my heart for this library and staff.

My husband and I visited the library shortly (we went with intentions of joining). We did enjoy our visit with a young lady in her 30's, she was very sweet and helpful. The two older ladies acted like we had alternative reasons for being there so, we left without joining. We are remodeling our vacation home outside of Merida. The natives of Merida are much more friendly than the expats.

“Peaceful place to read a book”
Reviewed May 4, 2012

The MEL is on Calle 53, between 66 and 68, just a few blocks from the main square. It is staffed by helpful ex-pats, and has a good selection of books in English, and a pretty courtyard where you can go and sit in the shade and read a magazine or chat to others. It also organises evenings and events for the ex-pat community. Open from 9am-1pm, Monday to Saturday.
