This is a slice of the USA and Canada. It is worth your time to just stop by and say hello. the only improvement would be if the board of directors were North Americans and they understood the reason this wonderful 'idea' ever came about. As good as it is - it was even better 10 years ago!!!!

There are several thousand North Americans who now live in Merida for at least part of the year. They have established their own English library called MELL (Merida English Language Library) and we visited it during a recent trip to Merida. It looked like a nice collection set up in a few rooms plus there was a computer for member's use, a back yard area for talks, and a collection of books for sale. We bought something to read during our trip. We spoke with one of the volunteers who told us about their little haven and learned that the members only pay $20 to join for a year. The library is about a half dozen blocks from the center of the city and in an area where lots of Gringos are now living.

The Library is only 5 mins walk from the Zocalo (main square). It is on Calle 53 between 66 & 68. It's run by volunteers within the English speaking community & has over 14,000 items, including books of all types, DVDs, etc.

If you are staying for a short time, you may want to look at their second hand books for sale at US$1. If you are in the city for a longer period (e.g. the winter), you might be interested in getting a year's membership, which will cost about US$20.

Besides books, they also sell plants, have conversation evenings where you can practice your Spanish, social gatherings & organise seminars, walking tours & more.

The staff are friendly & welcoming. For more details visit [-].
