“The Gem of Merida”
Reviewed July 30, 2014

Hotel Del Peregrino ticked all the boxes - and more! A boutique hotel, with Spanish Colonial charm and incredibly attentive staff. The property itself was maintained at a high standard and attention to detail everywhere one looked. Staff are well presented and very polite, well versed in English, extremely knowledgeable of the goings on in Merida as with the greater Yucatan. The owner is on site daily, is very approachable and is usually seen mingling with guests - charming touch. The rooms were very spacious, equipped with very comfortable beds, a desk, split system A/C, ceiling fan, clothes wardrobe and a modern bathroom/shower, with hot water. WiFi is free, fast and reliable. Daily chamber maid service ensured that the rooms were clean and bed linen and towels were fresh. To start your day, a complementary breakfast of fresh local fruits, cereals, yogurt, juice and coffee is served at precisely 8 am. The hotel is perfectly located to Paseo De Montejo, a few minutes' walk away, or to the Centro (Zocalo), which is under a 10 minute stroll away. The city itself is easy to get around in and I found it to be very safe at any hour of the day (or night). While in Merida, you must visit the Cenotes (caves), Mayan ruins and the Hacienda's. Mayan Ecotours is a very well versed and equipped tour company, and caters to these and other trips: be sure to speak to the staff at the front desk for information. Incredible value, great service and I was made to feel as part of the Hotel Del Peregrino family. I will be back again....

We emailed our plan for a late arrival and had an immediate response. A wonderful tour of four cenotes was arranged for us. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Breakfast was simple but very good. The hotel is built in the yucatan style - rooms surrounding an open space. The owner is on site.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel del Peregrino in May 2014 for 4 nights. We had room 14 upstairs and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Pros:
- Staff is very friendly and helpful.
- Our room was spacious and clean. Beds are comfortable.
- There are two windows in our room so lots of light and fresh air
- Breakfast has plenty of choice: juice/tea/coffee, yogurt, cereal, toast, fresh fruit, meat bar...
- guests can use the fridge and the kitchen after breakfast hours
- hotel is Mexican style, nicely decorated with awesome furniture at the lobby
- location is close enough, a 5-minute walk to the downtown core.

Cons:
- The shower lacks water pressure. I'm not sure if it's a problem cross the city though.
- The wardrobe was too small for two people. Need more clothes hanger.
- There's no chair in the room so we need to sit on the bed all the time. Would be better if there's at least a chair, and a bigger desk to put stuff on.
- wifi not working consistently

We were very happy with our stay and would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a budget friendly hotel with great value and service.

My friends and I were so very impressed when we arrived at the hotel, not only because it was such a a nice boutique hotel but the service was splendid, we were greated so opened heartedly and the recepcionist was always smiling. The rooms were just what we needed, the breakfast was more than enough and the location was perfect, we were just a few minutes away from Paseo de Montejo and main Centro. I will most definitely stay there on my next visit to Merida.

The Hotel (or B&B rather) is located a 10-15 minute walk from the main square. The location itself is not attractive in any way. We stayed in room 11 on the 1st floor. The rooms are very basic with A/C, an old TV, twin beds, bathroom and a floor with slight but noticeable incline. Rooms appear quite dated.
Pros:
- cheap, so the value is pretty good.
- Staff is very nice and helpful with information
- continental breakfast buffet was pretty good. no option for american breakfast though.

Cons:
- location is not that great as everything in Merida pretty much happens in the center. I would look for something a little closer if I went back.
- wifi (at least) at our room was pretty bad.
- bathroom could have been cleaner and it smelled a little of sewage

Comments/suggestions:
Can't really complain about the hotel. We got what we paid for. But in hindsight it was probably a little too basic for us. The hotel is acutally quite pretty architecturally but the rooms do not live up to the outside. To get a better feel for Merida I would recommend staying closer to the center. But if you are looking for a cheap hotel and don't care too much about location and having to walk a little to the center then I can recommend the hotel.

I am not sure if this guest even stayed at our hotel. First there is no room 11 on the first floor. Second, the TVs are about four years old. Third, all rooms were remodeled only four years ago. Fourth, the hotel is located right in the centre of Merida. We are 10 minutes walk to the zocalo.

At first I was a bit apprehensive - would the hotel live up to its glowing online reviews? Well, yes, it did. We were totally content throughout our 10-day stay. Our room was comfortable and clean, breakfast was more than adequate, the location was perfect - a few minutes' walk from the centro historico - and best of all, the staff were friendly and very helpful. Try it - you'll like it. If and when we return to Merida, that's where we'll be staying!
