“A most cordial place to stay”
Reviewed March 21, 2011

Visited with friends during Carnaval 2011 and we had simply a blast! The staff was extremely cordial and engaging. The service was exceptional at bargain prices. Breakfast is inclusive in the little patio overlooking the pool. You can pay extra if you would like to add eggs to the continental breakfast.
Centrally located and close to most sight-seeing places of interest in Mérida, including Paseo Montejo and Calle 60. 15 minute walk to the main plaza and the cathedral. Short walk to most restaurants and shopping.

My partner and I stayed with friends at Hotel Marionetas during Carnival and we had a fantastic time. We had 5 out of the 8 rooms all of which were very well equipped and very pleasantly decorated. The beds are firm and very comfortable and there is an unending supply of fresh, clean towels. We stayed in the Junior Suite, so had plenty of room including a nice little kitchenette, and a separate wc in addition to the large bathroom with walk-in shower. Its own little roof patio overlooking the pool is a delight. Of the other rooms, Room 3 was the nicest, and if you get the choice, try to avoid rooms 7 and 8 as these are off the corridor adjoining the lobby and have no view.
The staff are all extremely pleasant and polite - Marcelino and Enrico being the principal front of house figures, both speaking very good English and knowledgable about Merida. Book your tours through the hotel and not only are they excellent and of very good value for money, they are far cheaper than booking them in advance through the likes of Viator etc. On the subject of tours, Chichen Itza is of course a must see, but if you get the chance, do the afternoon Sound and Light Tour to Uxmal (less crowded than Chichen Itza and we thought far more impressive - the carvings on the buildings are incredible!) and also the Celestun tour to see the pink flamingoes....you go on a flat bottomed boat to see the flamingoes feeding in the shallows, and even get to walk through the mangrove swamp on a boardwalk to see a hot fresh water spring (take your swimwear on this trip as you can not only swim in the hot spring but lunch is at a beach restaurant so you can take a dip in the azure sea of the Gulf of Mexico)....they don't tell you about the swimming opportunity!
Breakfast at the hotel is included - it's quite simple Continental style with delicious fresh tropical fruit, yoghurt, croissants or rolls with butter and jam and fresh orange juice, tea and coffee. For an extra 40 pesos you can order eggs any style you want, and bacon too. There's no restaurant at the hotel but there is a small bar in the lobby where you can get bottled water and another drink if you're parched - a welcome drink would have been a nice touch that they missed out on. There's a small grocery store just around the corner from the hotel and the main street Calle 60 is a 3 minute walk away. 20 minutes walk and you're in the main square, and on the way there are numerous eateries. In town I would recommend eating at Amaro, a gorgeous patio restaurant. And if you would like something a bit more upmarket, try the fine dining at Rosas & Xocolat on the main boulevard Passeo Montejo, about 20 minutes walk in the other direction.
The hotel has free WiFi which is pretty quick, and has a free PC and Internet access in the lobby.
For location, friendliness of staff, cleanliness- everything really that you are looking for in a hotel - it would be difficult to better this hotel in terms of Value for Money. We would definitely stay there again and thoroughly recommend it!
One thing you should note though....if you are planning a visit to Yucatan, watching the daily Carnival parades in Merida is great - but be warned that the partying continues to about 3am with live music in the town squares so if you like to go to bed early avoid Carnival!
PS. Ignore the previous Review about not being able to flush paper down the toilet - that is nonsense, the loos take paper!
PPS. The hotel is probably not best for families, but for couples it is great, and we noticed it was registered with the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association. There were 7 gay men in our group and we were made to feel very welcome! So add "Gay Friendly" to the list of plusses!!

We spent 4 nights here, and though this B&B was fine, the immediate surrounding neighborhood didn't offer much in the way of dining options and even seemed a bit run-down. If it had been very hot, a walk to the main plaza would NOT have been pleasant. Breakfasts were good, but after 3 days we chose to go elsewhere for some variety. The hotel staff was helpful, and the free computer in the small lobby was a nice plus.

I stayed for 1 night at Hotel Marionetas in May 2010 during a road trip through the Yucatan. I wish I had stayed in Merida and at Hotel Marionetas longer. The hotel is beautifully decorated with local decor and vibrant colors. The person at the front desk gave us a warm welcome and had great suggestions for places to eat and things to do in town. He took the time to draw it all out on the city map. We were able to park our rental car across the street in a private lot for free instead of on the narrow street out front. The courtyard was a quiet oasis in the middle of a bustling colonial city. The pool was clean and just right for taking a dip in the hot afternoon sun. The room my boyfriend and I stayed in was on the 2nd floor and very private. We had a comfortable king bed and a hammock for lounging. The only drawback was there was no door to the toilet, rather 2 swinging doors like in a saloon from the wild west- so little privacy to say the least. Other than that we both loved the room and how well decorated it was. The hotel itself is well situated so that you have peace and quiet yet you can walk to all the attractions like the central plaza and shops. The breakfast was simple and delicious- watermelon, ham and cheese quesadillas, breakfast cheese, and coffee/juice. We met the owner on our way out the next morning and got to know him and his extensive travels- very interesting person. Him and his staff were great with the directions to our next destination. I would highly recommend staying here when you are in Merida.

No Bed and Breakfast rated over 1 star should require guests to not flush toilet paper! Honest to god, I've traveled all over Mexico and this is not normal and there is no excuse for this to happen in a city that supposedly has the thriving economy of Merida.

While the rooms are clean and the staff helpful, the hotel is not what we expected or paid for in advance. There is NO privacy when light pours through the slats in the door so expect no romantic interlude with your spouse. The staff speaks limited English and thus it can be hard to communicate. When it rains, and it is the tropics so rain is not an uncommon occurrence, we had a lovely raw sewage smell perfuming our room.

The closest selection of food is a ten minute stroll in oppressive, unrelenting humidity. There are no vending machines in the hotel, so if the bodega is closed, which is luckily at the end of the block, be prepared to not be able to drink anything. There is a bottle of water on the bathroom counter when you arrive, but it quickly disappears when you realize it's late, you're tired and dehydrated.

The shower is extremely slippery, be prepared to step carefully from the shower to the tile floored room. There is no way to gracefully shave your legs without risking your life either. The shower is however roomy but again the lack of privacy is an issue.

One of the primary reasons we booked this hotel over one of the larger hotels was the high thread count sheets and tempurpedic mattress. We got neither and when we stumbled downstairs after that first night, the staff seemed completely baffled when we mentioned the problem. The bed and linens were unacceptable.

WiFi is available but it is extremely spotty. We had to go downstairs to the patio to get a reliable connection.

We will not be going back and cannot in good faith recommend this hotel to anyone.

The pictures of this hotel don't do the place justice. It's really lovely. The rooms are arranged at the end of a small courtyard containing a beautiful little swimming pool and are surrounded by flowering Jasmine and tastefully chosen plants. Our room was spotless. The air conditioning worked just fine and we had an overhead fan as well. The room had a tv, fridge, unlimited wifi and safe and was everything we needed. The staff were super helpful and assisted with every aspect of our trip. Most also speak good English so there's no need to worry if your Spanish is not as strong as you'd like! Breakfast is a delight and is served in a covered open-air dining area near the pool. It was always fresh and tastefully prepared and presented, though you are not offered a menu to choose from. Don't worry, you'll love it. Fresh fruit, croissants, omelette, coffee etc. Just right. The location is about a 10 minute walk from the centre of town and you'll find that is just about where you need to be. The only slight reservation we had was that someone in an adjoining property has a couple of large dogs which woof a bit too early in the morning. Not a deal breaker in my opinion. There are loads of hotels of differing standards in town but we would certainly recommend this place without doubt. It is small, clean, rustic and lovely. Give it a try.

Stayed at the Marionetas several days in late July. Room was nicely decorated and very clean. Staff was very helpful in suggesting restaurants, sites to see, and making local travel and tour arrangements. Breakfast menu was very limited but prepared nicely.

Merida was quite hot. We would go out in the morning and later in the evening. The air conditioner was quite and effective for the afternoon nap.

We took the ADO bus from Cancun to the Merida CAME station and found the service fast and reliable. Do bring a sweatshirt for the bus ride; the ac in the bus got quite cold. Don't walk from the the bus station to the hotel, it's a trek; take a taxi right in the station, 50 pesos.
