Merida was the last stop on our yucatan tour. Our reservations were for the exact same time as hurricane dean was supposed to hit. Tom was super helpful as we emailed him from tulum to make sure all was still ok - after emailing with him my friend and i decided there was no place we'd rather be during a huricane than at luz en yucatan!
Tom had great suggestions for EVERYTHING- food, activities (there was music and entertainment in the street near the restaurants), excursions, what massage to get (get the ayurvedic 2 hour massage - it was amazing!). He gave us a pre-printed list of restaurants - I highly recommend eating the tacos where the pope ate -get all 5 different kinds (they're small). Cafeteria Pop was good too.
There is internet at the hotel if you have your own computer or internet cafes within a few blocks if you don't have your computer with you. Its easy to walk everywhere from Luz en Yucatan.
The room was fantastic, we had the middle type - 2 full beds, hammock, full kitchen, tv, wardrobe. it was very clean and mostly quiet. There were families staying in a few of the rooms, and the kids could be noisy. There is a big living space downstairs and a pool in the back.
If I were to ever go back to Merida - I'd stay at the luz en yucatan in a heartbeat! (Tom said he is going to be renovating though, so I'm sure the place will be different than the pictures, but I'll attach them anyway)

This is a great little hotel though you'd never know it from the street. You can't beat the location for convenience and safety. The beds are VERY comfortable, unlike most in Mexico. We got an entire apartment for the cost of a hotel room. There's a small pool in the quiet courtyard out back and a very nice communal, full kitchen a dining area that seats ten. The only negative was the water pressure and shower head in the bathroom, though we informed the owners upon departing and I suspect they'll correct it as they are in the midst of remodeling several rooms. Wireless Internet access was reliable and included. Upon arrival they give you a VERY complete list of everything you could possibly need in the area, including recommendations on several restaurants.

I heard that the new owners are doing some remodeling. I hope they don’t tinker too much with a good thing. This place was amazing. I am sure that there are lots of great places to stay in Merida, but we are so glad we chose Luz en Yucatan. We stayed there for five nights in July. The price was perfect for our budget. It is definitely not a luxury hotel, but it’s just perfect for what it is. For international travelers who like to be very comfortable yet feel they are staying in another country, this place oozes Mexican charm. The hotel itself is centuries old, a converted nunnery for the church next door. It’s eccentric--full of nooks, crannies, courtyards and interesting little rooms. It’s got lots of colorful Mexican furniture and interesting architectural and decorative accents. There’s a communal kitchen with all the tools and spices if you want to do your own serious cooking, but our room also had a kitchenette (and a coffeemaker that came with coffee, which was great) and there were so many interesting restaurants and cafes within easy walking distance that we never cooked our own food. The beds were clean and comfy and the hotel was quiet. The location is perfect for all the downtown Merida activities. It’s within very easy walking distance of the main plaza, but tucked away on a peaceful street. The courtyard and pool in back were lovely, with pretty vines and trees and relaxing sitting areas. Wifi access was a nice convenience. The staff and owners were so welcoming and helpful. We hope to return to Merida soon, and this is our first choice for accommodations. We'll be back, without a doubt.

We arrived in Merida befote dinner and reached Luz en Yucatán. It tooks us a lot of time to reach the hotel due to traffic. Merida is a great place, with very nice buildings and a lot of nightlife. The hotel was really nice, beautiful painted with colours, Mexican staff everywhere you really felt like be at home. The lady that was there was very friendly. There is a small garden with a little pool, the trees are so beautiful. Everything was nice, only the room was not as expected, needed a bit of renewal. Painting on the wall was coming down and the bathroom was not really the best. It was really old and the impression was that it was not 100 % clean and is directly on the little garden without the possibility to close the window. The hotel is really well located, only 5 minutes by walk from the Cathedral. Parking is in front of the hotel and is cheap. On the way to the cathedral we stopped in a nice restaurant for dinner and enjoyed the typical Café’ Maya, really turistic but is nice to see how they prepare it and the taste is really good!
In the main square there were a lot of people walking around and there was an artist playing with people and intertaining them. We saw a couple listening Mariachi music in a tenderly hug. It was very emotioning. The atmosphere was really magic

I did alot of internet research on where to stay in Merida and Im glad we decided to listen to all the great reviews on the Luz. The location is perfect - away from all the late night music of the zocolo. The owner was a VERY COOL guy and very knowledgeable, helpful & accommodating. This is not a 5 star luxury hotel, but it is fun, economical and an interesting way of experiencing Merida. It was a very tranquil stay even though we had our 2 kids with us. Its basically a big colonial style house with various rooms, each with its own little name. Our room, "Oso," had a small kitchen/dining area, but there is also a large kitchen for all guests to use, making this ideal for families, as well as anyone who simply wants to make their own meals. I was VERY pleased with the beds - totally clean and much more comfortable than most beds in Mexico. If you have young children, however, you do need to be careful - the floors are tiled and SO SO SLIPPERY. My kids ate it a few times, no broken bones though. After we walked around the city for a while and passed by other hotels, we felt lucky to have chosen the Luz.

Hotel Luz En Yuctan was a haven for the independent traveller. This truly felt like 'the home away from home'. We stayed in the one bedrooom apartment, which was spacious and clean - and the hammock (stored in the room) was a nice touch to hang up and relax in. The location was perfect for exploring the city and provided a welcome refuge after the hustle of the city. The pool was a welcome retreat from the heat and relaxing with the lush gardens around. The owner, was friendly and helpful with ideas for touring - nothing was a problem here. Would highly recommend.

We had a beautiful room, with coffee and a beer in the fridge. Good A/C (needed in June). The room was clean and tidy, and the bathroom spotless. The house was amazing, with a kitchen facility and a lounge room complete with hammock and very comfortable chairs. Tom, the current owner, was very helpful providing tips on where to get a good hammock where to eat and what to do. Great atmosphere. The best place I stayed during my three week trip of Belize and Mexico. Would recommend to my mum, my sister and my friend. FAB!!
