“A gem in Merida...”
Reviewed July 28, 2011

The Luz en Yucatan is a wonderful little hotel in the center of Merida. The hosts are friendly and helpful and the staff is great. I started out in the little room in the very back on the second floor by the pool, and it was very cute. Then I had to move to an inner room which was very large and comfortable. The hotel is rich in Mexican decor and the little courtyard with the pool is like a little oasis. It is only a few blocks from the main square and there are a few restaurants very close by that are great for all meals of the day. You cannot go wrong with the Luz en Yucatan. At its very reasonable price, I don't think I'd ever stay anywhere else while visiting Merida.

How can you be unhappy when greeted by two cold ones awaiting your arrival? Luz goes out of it's way to both be available yet unobtrusive during your stay. The location is perfect and the owners and support staff are lovely. Would never stay elsewhere in Merida!

We stayed here last March 2010 and it was our first trip to Merida. The owner went above and beyond to assist us, even letting us into our room at 11:00 pm at night after a long drive from Cancun. He had beer in the fridge and welcome drinks in the Lobby. The building is old so sound travels but if you keep the fan on and wear some good ear plugs you will sleep well. Our room was on the first floor with lovely hammocks and our looking the pool. The area is a bit deceiving at first, I was scared we would get mugged. But after you are there for only a few short hours, you realize it is very safe and the people are very welcoming. Merida is so filled with charm and the Sunday carnival is not to be missed! Plan your trip to be here on a Sunday because it is a must. And stay at this b and b, the rates are great, the service is great, and you will not be disappointed. You will leave feeling filled with the lovely spirit of Mexico and the people of Merida. It is a secret gem.

Hotel Luz en Yucatan offers everything you need. When we checked in, we got a list of nearby shops and restaurants. There was a fridge (not a minibar) in the room, enough drinking water, wireless internet, a large and comfortable bed. We also had a terrace, overlooking the patio with the pool.

Last but not least: prices are reasonable.

We stayed for only two nights, but this place is fantastic. Try to get a room away from the central area; they are a little better. Free booze, are you kidding me! This place used to house nuns and is just a fantastic little gem!

Luz en Yucatan was even better than we’d been led to believe it would be! It’s like a little oasis in the middle of the hot and dusty city. We were given a warm welcome by Lupita, plus some information about the city. The rooms – indeed the whole building – is beautifully and tastefully decorated and furnished. When I walked in I just felt like I wanted to rest and relax there for a few days and not bother with the sightseeing! The swimming pool was welcome for a cooling afternoon dip and there were some very nice touches - not only drinking water, coffee maker and a fridge in the room, but a welcome pack with freshly ground coffee, and a couple of cold beers in the fridge. The hotel is well placed in Merida for seeing the main sights – if you can drag yourself away from its delights!

Stay at the retreat, you won't regret it. After every excersion we couldn't wait to return to the casa to refresh and rejuvenate. Perfect location and perfect hosts . Thanks to Tom and staff who anticipated our every need even before requesting it. Been depressed ever since returning home, can't wait to return. Don't hesitate, just do it. I would not stay anywhere else, convenient to all Merida has to offer. Eight days was not enough time, stay longer. Richard, Mark & Guillermo San Diego, California
