Hacienda San Pedro Nohpat
Ranked #39 of 106 Hotels in Merida

My wife and I stayed at the Hacienda in February 2008 for six nights. It was truly wonderful place run by two wonderful people, Iona and JR. We based our decision on the reviews here and were not disappointed. If you want the CannedCun fake Mexico experience, this place is not for you. If you want a relaxing time and a great base to explore Mayan ruins, colonial towns and small Mexican villages, the Gulf Coast, and the amazing city of Merida, this is the place to stay. The temps are cooler than in the city. Fresh breakfast every morning with freshly squeezed juice and a local dish called huevos con chaya. The staff is very helpful but never hanging around and hovering. Some afternoons we were the only ones by the pool and felt like we'd rented the whole hacienda as we had the place to ourselves. And be sure to take a motorcycle taxi to Susana's in the nearby village Kanasin. Again, I can't say enough about the hosts, they were the best.

We stayed at the Hacienda in April 2007, based on the other reviews from this site. This was the last part of our trip, and we were coming from the extremely touristy coast, therefore this hacienda was a great way to immerse yourself in a much more authentic Mexican city at the same time holding on to the comforts of the coast.

The Hacienda itself is absolutely gorgeous, and has a very welcoming staff that will make you feel very relaxed and at home.

The owner was very knowledgeable about things to do, especially things off the beaten track. She also can point you to local restaurants that you can guarantee will not be in the guide book.

There are two pools, air conditioned rooms, and (this was the best part) there is Goldy the resident dog, 2 peacocks, and parrots that will eat breakfast with you if you wish. There is a rich history to the Hacienda, and a couple of photo albums the owner can show you as well.

This Hacienda is hidden, and on a street that actually made us a little wary of what the place would be like, as its just homes, and some run down looking buildings. However, you pull into the parking lot and you realize you made the right choice! It is a great place to see part of Mexico that other hotels hide you from.

Finally, the breakfast in the AM was great. There was good coffee, fresh fruit, and some great choices to pick from. Overall, a unique and hidden getaway!

My husband and I stayed with Iona and JR at their hacienda for three nights this month and it was wonderful. If you're looking for a sterile, brand-name experience, this isn't the right place for you (but then neither is most of Mexico outside of the Cancun resorts). Their hacienda is full of charm, clean, beautiful and very relaxing. The pools are clean and the home-made breakfast (fresh fruit and squeezed orange juice, coffee and eggs scrambled with this local spinach-like vegetable with tortillas) was delicious. Iona and her staff were particularly helpful with our rental car problems (they called the Alamo office directly and negotiated for a new car and a discount off of our bill). She also provided great restaurant and day-trip advice. Go to the cenotes at Cuzama!
I highly recommend staying here; it was one of the best "hotel" experiences we've ever had in any country we've visited.

We just returned from a 7 day stay at Hacienda San Pedro Nohpat. It was really a great experience. The Canadian couple who operate the Hacienda are warm, welcoming and very helpful - truly a home away from home. We stayed in the Donna de San Pedro room. It was spacious, clean and modern with excellent air conditioning. The Hacienda's location is excellent for exploring the Yucatan. We considered staying in Merida but we didn't want to have to fight traffic getting out of town to explore the area. Hacienda San Pedro Nohpat is on the outskirts of Merida with excellent access to the freeway. We loved the breakfasts with lots of fresh fruit and fluffy pancakes. Hacienda San Pedro Nohpat is a perfect base with which to explore the wondrous sites of the Yucatan.

We stayed here for 3 days in early January, 2008. The Hacienda is located on the outskirts of San Pedro which is a short distance from Merida. If you would like to be near a local Mexican village with a lively central square, experience local customs (such as the ride on the motorcycle taxi), eat in small local restaurants, then Hacienda San Pedro is the perfect place. The owners, Iona and JR, have done an amazing job in restoring the Hacienda and in making it a very comfortable and welcoming place to stay. The gardens and grounds of the Hacienda, while lovely with various paths, are not large and enable you to see local people playing games on the playground just outside the gate which adds to the feeling of being in Mexico. Our room on the second floor near one of the pools was very clean, quiet, large, had a Jacuzzi, air conditioning, a TV and a DVD player. Several DVDs are available for borrowing. We took the local bus which stops right outside the Hacienda gate to Merida—another local experience which greatly added to enjoyment of our trip. We would definitely stay here again.

Our family stayed 3 nights in early January and found this to be an excellent place for us despite the gritty neighborhood location. The hacienda is nicely restored but not fancy, and our kids loved the parrots, peacocks, and other animals while roaming the grounds. To see a more grand hacienda (also surrounded by a gritty neighborhood), have lunch at the Hacienda Teya less than 2 miles away. They also rent a few rooms but mostly cater to large groups and weddings, and I was not tempted to stay there instead given the character of this place. We participated in an optional dinner on our first night and greatly enjoyed the chance to mix with other guests. The food at dinner and the three breakfasts we had was filling and nicely prepared, more like home cooking than gourmet style. The next night we went with other guests via motorcycle taxi to a local restaurant at the suggestion of Iona and also had a great time. The owner of the restaurant offered to get us taxis or send us back in his pick-up truck and we chose the latter. My kids loved riding in back with the guys for the short trip while the women sat inside.

We took advantage of the bus stop outside the parking gate area to go to downtown Merida for the equivalent of 50 cents per person. The bus ends at the dreary new market which is about 5 blocks down and 5 blocks over from the historic plaza. I did the trip twice and took the bus back once and a cab for $8 the other time. By the way, the neighborhoods on the way to downtown are similarly gritty as are the villages one passes through on the free highway to Chichen Itza, although I didn't feel that they were dangerous neighborhoods. We felt it was important for our kids to experience those areas but others may feel differently. Merida is densely populated with a lot of narrow, one-way streets and not much parking so I don't recommend driving unless you have great patience or know your way around. I imagine Merida has some nice places to stay, but if you want good proximity to other sights in the region it looked a lot easier to stay on the outskirts like at this place. Iona and JR have suggestions on outings including Mayan ruins, a cenote via a horse-drawn wagon, a colonial convent, and others. This place is a good value on its own, but the owners' effort to be welcoming and accommodating lift it further.

The Hacienda is located in San Pedro, a small pueblo about 20 minutes (by car) from the center of Merida. Taxi costs about $8 and there is a bus right outside the door for 50 cents that takes you right to the central bus station in Merida. The grounds are lovely. The pool is very nice and refreshing. Rooms are nicely decorated in hacienda style. Central living room makes it easy to meet people and share tourist stories. DVDs and videos are available to borrow for the nights when there isn't much else to do. We were there on New year's day and nothing was open. They hosted a dinner buffet for all guests. Delicious and very inviting. The only issue I had--San Pedro is a small area, very residential, and very quiet. Once we got to the Hacienda, we didn't really want to explore the town (lots of stray dogs, garbage, all residential, no retail/dining) and once it was dark, we stayed put. So unless you have a car (which we didn't), plan to stay and enjoy the pool or take the bus to Merida, you will feel quite isolated.
