We were on a Carnival cruise and decided to not book a shore excursion through Carnival, but to purchase one off the boat. The AutoProgreso sales people were in the shops just off the dock. Very easy to find! They provided transportation to the area to get on the tour bus. We purchased the Combo tour that toured Dzibilchaltun Mayan ruins and the city of Merida. It was a great value and we actually spent more time at each location then the people that booked through Carnival! No worries about getting back to the ship, they got us there in time and delivered us directly to the Cruise terminal.

Excellent experience using Grupo AutoProgresso for a combo tour. Bigger review under Dzibilchaltun Ruins.

If you are going to be in the Progreso or Merida, Mexico areas and want to take a tour, you can use Autoprogreso without worries. They are the same tour company that Carnival cruise lines uses to send their passengers on tours but it is much cheaper if you book directly through AP. We have used them several times to tour the Dzib Mayan Ruins and have never had a problem. They are courteous and reasonably prompt and all the guides speak English. They will also give you the option of dropping you back in town after your tour or continuing directly back to your cruise ship. We have booked a different tour with them to the Yucatan Reef Club Resort this spring. You won't be disappointed with AP!

We took the combo tour. It was really easy to find the people who worked for the company they all had peach colored shirts on. We paid on the street and were given arm bands and directed to the bus. The bus took us to the flea market where we waited until there was to many people lined up we all couldn't fit on the bus! Another bus came shortly after to get the rest of the people. Bus ride had A/C and the tour guide chatted on a PC system about the culture and history. We arrived at the DZIBICHALTUN and were give and chance to use the bathrooms and check out backpacks before we entered the guided tour. We were given about 45 mins to either swim in the huge water hole or wander around the ruins. It was pretty hot even in January, but you were able to take water in with you. Next we loaded back onto the bus to visit the town of MERIDA. Once we arrived we were given a choice to eat or go on a walking tour. Between the two bus loads only 3 people opted to wander around the town. We were guided where to eat. The bill was in pesos, but after figuring the tip, it was almost $90 for 3 people to eat. I think we got ripped off. Don't get me wrong the food was great, but $30 for shrimp and corn tortillas with a bottled coke? That seems a little high priced to me! We did ask for salsa and guacamole and that was provided without adding it to the bill. Once we were on the bus we realized there was a few people missing. We assumed they were loaded onto the other bus since that one wasn't as full. Turns out the girl who was stilling next to my mom along with 2 other guest were left in Merida! The 3 people were able to find a bus back to progreso and take a taxi back to the cruise ship. The girl was a worker on the cruise ship and was lucky they didn't fire her for not reporting back at her scheduled time. The tour guide should have kept a better count of the people so they do not get left behind. I can say we had a great experience and a great tour. But it lingers in my mind that we could have easily been left behind and that would be a huge issue in my evaluation of this trip. The price of this tour was significantly cheaper than booking with the cruise ship.
