This is an old, large home built into a hotel. The staff was always there to help with anything 24 hours to include the kitchen staff that was there to hand out coffee, etc at night. Our room was in front of the peaceful flowing fountain, and next to the spotless pool, no spa or gym. There is enough opportunity to walk everywhere. The whole property was spotless. Breakfast included tropical juices, fruit, coffee, tea, water, and scrambled eggs each day with a different added meat. Beans everyday plus a different Mexican dish every day, all delicious and hot and fresh...Sunday morn surprised us with guitarists while we ate....The internet and wifi were fine and the staff was always helpful if we needed. The room was lacking an ironing board and blankets but were available upon request....This is not an American standard hotel. So if you want everything to be and look like one, think twice as in my experience, American hotels are not always want you pay for...this hotel is where you should stay if you want to experience the culture...In the center of town where there is always something going on and if you hear music at night it is the people celebrating their heritage..There were 9 of us and we were all pleased. There are several sitting areas, inside and out, some with rocking chairs and fountains....just wonderful....
The front desk, the room service, the kitchen staff all were superb and eager to please....some spoke English.

Room Tip: there is no pool or spa...ask for a room on the ground floor by the pool and fountain.

The Sta. Lucia area is becoming one of THE places to be in Merida, with the completion of the improvements to its namesake plaza. It's always been convenient to the various attractions and restaurants of the city.

The hotel is right there and, compared to reviews from several months back, it is doing updates to position it better in a more upscale market. I assume price increases will be part of this.

I'm not sure if all the rooms have been renovated, but the two that we had on the second floor overlooking the pool had obviously received recent makeovers, including new bathrooms with rainforest shower heads (but inconsistent hot water), flat screen TVs, new bedding, new lighting, etc. (but a battered old sliding door onto my small balcony). Hopefully these inconsistencies are temporary.

The wifi was reliable and the pool and pool area were very pleasant. Since the weather was hot in late December when we were there, the latter was much appreciated.

Room Tip: Courtyard overlooking pool.

Stayed here in September to see Merida and use as a base for exploring. Four nights. I would stay here again but if you're picky probably best leave it. The location is fantastic being a block away from the main squares & cathedrals, plenty bars/restaurants, and having a small plaza opposite which boasts live jazz and great Mexican bands at night (noise not a problem in hotel and doesn't go on till after 10pm). Free parking is available in car park at side of hotel but entrance is tight so take it easy!
Calle 60 is shut down from 8pm to midnight on Sundays for the street festival which was part of our reason for choosing this hotel. Unfortunately was rained off during our stay,
From other reviews I requested a room over looking looking the courtyard to avoid noise from the nearby disco. This was online via Booking.com. We arrived & were given a room on the 2nd floor (3rd in American) at the back of the hotel w/ a small balcony. Room was ok but outdated w/ safe, minibar, flat screen TV etc. generally clean but some bits hadn't been cleaned for a while. Towels were frayed and needed bleaching but they were laundered. Turned out the club was in front of the tree outside our balcony. Thump thump till 3am! Moved next day to room nearer front of hotel.
New room (# 207) was just refurbished and although not 100% finished, was a massive improvement and quite modern w/ fully tiled bathroom and new paint/plaster. No disco noise either! King size bed very comfy.
The room next door was being redone too so presumably they're going to the rest too. However if you're wanting to lie in, you"ll endure the banging as they remodel.
L shaped hotel overlooks charming walled courtyard w/ a small, clean pool, a fountain and character landscaping/greenery. Public areas/restaurant are all very clean w/ great decor.
Outside covered seating/tables overlook courtyard and there are plenty of other seating areas throughout the hotel.
The free breakfast is great & offers cereals, fresh fruits, juices, and some hot options which vary slightly every day. For some reason they don't push food from the restaurant during the day although the chef seems to work from morning to night preparing mouthwatering dishes, fancy pastries etc. I think they must do some kind of outside catering or something which must be more lucrative than lunch or dinner options for a trickle of guests who didn't want to venture onto the street.
Staff are all friendly, professional, helpful although few speak much English.
I'd stay here again now I know the in's & out's, mainly for the location, charm & value for money (after the remodeling is complete though!). If you want frills/luxury this is probably not for you.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear are near a nightclub so avoid (note club closes at 3pm but is closed on Sundays) a...

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel when we visited Merida. The location is really good, and it was very good for us that they had a parking lot were we could keep our rental car. The room was ok, perhaps not the most newly renovated, a little sparse perhaps, but it seemed clean and the beds were good. We used the pool quite a bit since it was about 40 degrees Celcius when we were in Merida. The breakfast didn't impress us so we went around the corner (to Pop Cafe) to have breakfast instead.
The staff was friendly and helped us to do some laundry which was really great.

This is my third visit to this hotel and each time it's been largely satisfactory and good value for money every time. Whatever other reviewers say, I've found it always to be impeccably clean. Rooms here aren't luxuriously appointed but there's nothing much wrong with them. If it was my hotel I'd spring for some more attractive bedding, but the beds are good and firm and comfortable. Bathroom and shower are clean and there's plentiful hot water. Internet service is very good (though you have to log in to 4 different servers to ensure service all across the hotel. The pool and pool area are attractive; the pool itself doesn't get a lot of direct sunlight so the water is usually a bit too cool. The staff is efficient and helpful. Location couldn't be better, a few blocks from the main drag and plaza...and now, right opposite the latest branch of the excellent Tratto restaurant. The breakfast here is nothing special, and it's easy to find better within a block or three. My big problem this time was one I hadn't encountered before. On Friday and Saturday evenings, from about 8pm until 3, two nearby clubs blast their music seemingly through the hotel's foundations. This didn't happen the rest of the week, leading to the obvious conclusion...not at the weekend!

The Empajador is a great place to stay in Merida when it is hot out which is most of the time. The pool area and the pool are very pleasant. We spent many hours in this area. Our room clean and quiet and medium sized. the staff spoke English and were very helpful.

We've stayed at this hotel many times, and we have always enjoyed it -- especially for the great location. I know the name has changed and I wonder if the ownership has, too? We noticed many things on this stay that need attention. The rooms need some updating and there needs to be more attention to cleanliness. There is a new elevator, which is great, but on the day we arrived, I noticed smudgy palm prints all over the mirror on the inside of the elevator. A week late, the mirror had still not been cleaned -- not a good sign for how the rooms are maintained. Also, at breakfast, there was only one employee managing breakfast. He was constantly having to bring more food and there were rarely enough cups, plates, and silverware. We all felt sorry for him. The hotel is still a good value, but some attention needs to be given to maintenance and upkeep. And although we have always had WIFI in the rooms in the past, we could not get it in our room this year, which was on the top floor at the front. Nor could my son get it in his room. We mentioned this to the staff, but they shrugged it off, saying something like "It works here in the lobby..."

Room Tip: If WIFI is important, tell them you need a room with a strong signal. I would not want to be on the...
