On our first full day in Merida we headed down the street to Marlin Azul for some cold cervezas, ceviche mixto, shrimp in mojo de ajo for my wife and “drunken shrimp” covered with a cilantro sauce for me. We had heard they had a small air conditioned dining room next door, but failed to notice the separate entrance to the left and ended up in the main room. The place was patronized by locals and we felt that it was an authentic Meridian experience. The ceviche was OK, the two shrimp dishes each a bit better. Service was slow but it was a little busy. Our bill was 308 pesos ($24.64) plus tip.

First trip to Merida about ten years ago we knew nothing of the potential for fine dining in Merida, just saw "eating" places in relatively small "step-up" places around the center of town. Saw what looked like a "fish place" so we stopped for late lunch. Wow! It was absolutely great food with very nice service people who worked hard to understand our needs that we could only present in English and by pointing at the menu. Now that we live here we stop in Marlin Azul from time to time to relive that memory and every time, it proves we were right the first time we visited and we were right to retire to a city with good food on almost every street somewhere in almost every neighborhood. Marlin Azul keeps our faith.

Have visited this lunch spot several times now for huge plates of mixto ceviche and cervesas. Cant beat the price and always super fresh, large plates with plenty of seafood. Not open for dinner, only mid day meal. A little hard to find if you don't yet know your way around the centro historico. But worth the effort to walk the blocks around till you find it.It was on my way home so midday before siesta is the super place to have luch.

They're only open at lunch. The ceviche mixto is fabulous, the guacamole is good, and the shrimp fajitas are good (although you have to ask for corn tortillas; they brought me flour at first). They have one room with A/C and one without. Takeout is an option, and prices are decent. I think I spent 70 pesos on ceviche and 80 on fajitas. Guacamole is maybe 30 or 40. I brought my Spanish classmates here and everyone loved it.

If you want to experience real local seafood without all the tourist trappings you must experience
Marlin Azul. This is where the people eat. Basic Spanish is suggested or just take a chance with the menu, you will not be disappointed.
