You have heard & seen pictures of pre- Columbian Mayan civilization. You have seen the present day ruins that have been partially restored. But inbetween those 2 times the Mayan sites looked very different. At this house you will see the beautiful art work of F. Catherwood who with J. Stevens rediscovered the ancient Mayan cities that had been forgotten since Cortez's time. The jungle claimed all for its own & Stevens & Catherwood started removing soil, vines & trees. No cameras so Catherwood's artwork introduced the ancient Mayan wonders to the World. This generated the interest that resulted in much scientific research & eventually tourism. Especially interesting are the explainations for each work (in Eng. & Span.), because it shows how Catherwood was interested in more than just documenting structures. Do read all. Entry fee not expensive.
